Baldur's Gate 3 is most likely to be crowned Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023. That's according to everyone who voted in our recent poll, which asked one simple question: What do you think will win Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023?
Just under 5,000 votes were cast, and Larian's immensely popular RPG walked away with a whopping 56% of the vote. An impressive figure, given the overall quality of the other contenders. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom claimed second place, but with just 20% of the vote, it was still nowhere near the win.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 wasn't too far behind Nintendo's blockbuster with 12%, and Alan Wake 2 claimed the fourth spot with 7%. Perhaps unsurprisingly, stellar remake Resident Evil 4 and highly rated platformer Super Mario Bros. Wonder brought up the rear, with 3% and 1% of the vote respectively.
For what it's worth, most of us here at Push Square tend to agree with the results. It definitely feels like Baldur's Gate 3 has an edge this year — the game is just that good, and it's still making regular headlines thanks to updates and crazy community feats.
But it doesn't really matter which game takes the ultimate prize at Geoff Keighley's big event — the bottom line here is that 2023 has been a banger for top quality titles.

Not sure about the percentages, but I agree with the rankings. BG3 is the favorite to win, but it's still possible Zelda snags it. Nobody else really has a chance.
Spider-Man 2 is in no way ahead of Alan Wake. It’s very much going to Baldur’s Gate though.
probably will win but like most awards i dont like most of the stuff that wins
Can't see anything else other than BG3 or TOTK winning GOTY, but with how much critics have been digging BG3 I think that's a safe win with plenty of awards alongside it. I can see Alan Wake 2 being a popular winner for awards too
I wonder if people have finished it tho... because playing Divinity OS2, it's great and all but you sometimes feel like just dropping it when you don't really know your focus, missions popping up everywhere.
Agreed! Bloody amazing but very hard game. On my 4th attempt playthrough, over 130 hours now. Tbh there's been no game that's came close, no microtransactions , no content ripped out and remade as dlc, very few bugs. Been very few good games this yeah. Imp spiderman 2 fell short, story wasn't the best and similar/recycled gameplay - venom like power were cool but been don't better . Not many gsme makers take risks anymore. Been a lot of remasters the last couple years
Most of my vote splits between BG3 and Alan Wake.
I think Spiderman is really great but just cant keep up with the others.
I feel really bad for Lies of P, in a normal year I think it had a real chance to pick up some gongs but the competiton is just too fierce for it
I don't think remakes like RE4 should be allowed to be nominated.
Despite pouring nearly 300hrs into Tears of the Kingdom this summer, I’m also convinced that Baldur’s Gate 3 will walk away with the top gong. I still haven’t played it myself however, so I’m super tempted to pre-order that recently revealed physical edition.
@EliteSlayer If it was just a remaster I would agree with you. Capcom put some serious love into the remake. I'm not saying it should win, but I'm fine with it being nominated. It's fantastic.
@TheArt I've finished it (first playthrough 120 hours!) with a lawful good run.
After finishing it, I tried : Star Wars - Jedi Survivor, then Assassin's Creed Mirage, then Lords of the Fallen. I played all of them for 8-10 hours and all the time, I was just thinking about BG3.
So I stopped playing these milquetoast games that didn't offer anything new, and went and started a new paythrough, this time a chaotic evil Dark Urge, and I'm just coming into Act 3.
BG3 is as tremendous a game to me as were, in their time, Civilization, Dark Souls or Elden Ring : so good that playing anything else seems like a downgrade of my entertainment time... And I'm very rarely that hyperbolic about a game!
@DonkeyFantasy If by "sort of" you mean "not at all", then you're right
I mean it released for PC first and is coming to Xbox in december, that hardly counts as a PS exclusive, not even "sort of"
@Loamy. Monster hunter world is amazing.dragon dogma is excellent.and Baldur's gate is incredible.3 of the best games ever made.yeah Baldur's gate is the favorite.larian studio made the 2 instant classic divinity original sin games.word up son
@Splat I agree that it is a fantastic remake. I would be fine with this nomination if it was a remake like ff7 which was basically a new game.
We the public voters only counts towards 10% of the total votes for the actual goty winner. The other 90% is in goods hands though as I'm assuming the other 90% all mostly love BG3 too? going by all the positive reception and reviews. Personally I think South Park Fractured But Whole should have been nominated
I'm quite pleased that an RPG is not only in the running but is the favorite to win. With games like this and Honkai Star Rail being runaway successes, I hope we can expect a return to these types of games by AAA developers, rather than the constant barrage of action RPGs that we've been getting these past few years.
I've not played it but given the online reaction, it seems Baulders Gate 3 is likely to win, with its only realistic competition being Zelda
@Sam_ATLUS yeaahh, Alan Wake 2 seems perfect for a lot of the other awards, I thought. I don't think BG3 will win everything, and it definitely shouldn't just win everything by default just because it will likely be GotY and locked on for RPG of the year, naturally, but of the rest I consider AW2 to be the most likely for getting the most total awards, which would be cool to see another game other than the GotY do that 😁
It'd be pretty naff if it's just BG3, BG3, BG3, BG3, BG3, some random streamer, esport team, BG3
I’d go with Zelda only because I’ve not played BG3
@DonaldMcRonald I'm aware ha, it was just a little joke. Very fun platinum that was
I feel so happy that so many people agree with what I was saying prior to the game even fully releasing on the PC, let alone the PlayStation. I've been saying the game is masterpiece to absolutely everyone, and after having done a single run that lasted over 300 hours, in which I did pretty much everything I was able to (bearing in mind the decisions I made) I am even more convinced of that fact.
The game is, in my opinion, a once in a lifetime game. I've been gaming since I was 9 years old when I first played Pong way back in 1973, and immediately fell in love with gaming. Now, 50 years later, I can say with total honesty that I have never played a game that matches the quality of Baldur's Gate 3. Even after I finished my 300 hour run, I had the desire to play more. I didn't want it to be over. I had all sorts of builds and run types coursing through my mind, and I cannot wait to dive back into it, though because I need to finish a couple of other games such as Alan Wake 2 and Spiderman 2, I've decided to play it in the New Year, when my second run won't be interrupted by Christmas.
I really hope that Larian win big everywhere they are nominated. If anyone deserves the recognition, it is them. They are so intrinsically involved with their community, and really try to make the best games possible. I loved Divinity Original Sin, and kick-started DoS2, which turned out to be my favourite ever game until the release of BG3. I hope that the game makes a ton of money for them, and that Sven becomes suitably rich! They absolutely deserve all the plaudits...
As long as Alan Wake 2 wins some other awards over Baldur’s Gate 3, I won’t complain. BG3 was a cultural touchstone for the industry this year, so I think it will win GotY, even if it isn’t my personal pick. It’s well deserved if it wins due to the way that the industry has essentially united around the title.
But let’s be real… I’m more curious to what Pushsquare will pick than TGA. Pushsquare staff doesn’t always sync with the common thought and that’s a wonderful thing. I’m still applauding the choice for RE: Village as GotY.
@DonaldMcRonald same here not sure either. I mean there's plenty that adore both South Park and coop multiplayer so Snow Day should do well for itself if decently put together and fun to play
BG3 doesn't deserve to win in my opinion. It's all down to personal preference but Zelda ToTK, RE4 and Alan Wake 2 are more deserving.
Spider-Man 2, whilst good, doesn't deserve to even be in the running.
Octopath Traveller 2 however, shockingly ignored. ☹️
I much prefer FF16 to BG3. Just for gameplay personal preference. But can’t take anything away from BG3 and it will more than likely win it, but Zelda has to be a strong contender as well.
My Portal is a Baldur's Gate machine, I can't get enough of it, it's fantastic. I haven't played everything else on the list of course, but it would be my choice. Watched my son play through TOTK and decided to pass, but I'm aware the standard 'Nintendo Bump' could see it win yet.
@Ravix Yeah I hope the awards are more spread out and it isn't just BG3 winning everything. I felt like that was happening last year with Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok in most categories. With so many great games having released this year, I'd like to see it fleshed out so these titles get the rewards they deserve
BG3 wins on the popular vote but this is only 10 percent of the vote. I think the judges that make up 90 percent will see Alan Wake 2 as a close runner due to the technical marvel it is as well as many other unique aspects of the game. The others unfortunately, although great in their own right, don't really get a look in imo.
I wouldn't be surprised if Zelda takes it.
BG3 deservedly will get it and I do love it but Alan Wake is my personal GOTY.
@Splat RE4 should be eligible for everything except for GOTY imo. Because you're right, its not just a remaster but its also not an entirely "new" game either. Sure, Capcom did a lot of work updating and reworking the game, but at its core its still RE4. It has the same level design, the same enemies, the same story and characters. Yes, slight tweeks were made to some of those aspects along the way but its a largely faithful remake of the original. So as great as RE4 remake is it really shouldn't be up there alongside actual new releases for GOTY
What about Gollum? LOL
I say BG3 takes it over Zelda because A) BotW won GOTY and as fantastic as TotK may be, it is iterative and B) Larian is an indy studio. You could give Nintendo another pat on the back or launch a relatively small company (prior to the DnD license) into a new stratusphere. I say give it to the up and comers - it makes for a more entertaining show.
Well of course a PS title would win in a poll like this here, as would Zelda win in a NintendoLife poll or would maybe even Starfield be nominated in an XBox site. It is just biased.
Anyways I still think the it is a race between BG3 and Zelda, with only AW2 being a possible underdog suprise
The category I care about most is best actor or whatever. I just want Ben Starr to win for his epic performance of Clive. I should probably go vote now tbh
BG3 really is 'The Game of the Year' for 2023. It hit the cultural zeitgeist much like Elden Ring did in 2022.
@Olmaz I mean BG3 is way more advanced than Divinity on a technical level, it's highly impressive but if it's the same steep learning curve and multiple missions just popping up like Divinity...some people would just give up along the way I'd reckon.
@TheArt I haven't been able the finish Divinity Original Sin 2. I tried 3 times, and every time I feel it gets repetitive and a slog.
In my opinion, BG3 is a huge step up from DOS2 regarding narrative, freedom of action and diversity of gameplay.
As i said in the poll article its either BG3 or TotK winning and they're fooling themselves if they think something else will win.
@__jamiie Why doesn't it "deserve" to win?
BG3 is an incomplete game sold on lies by the studio. The ending isn’t even half finished. It wasn’t ready for release at all.
Sony would be wise to change their minds about a buyout.
It's obvious to everyone that BG3 will win but even with all the buzz and hype surrounding it I still have no interest in playing it and I never will.
Alan Wake 2 is such an achievement for gaming. Those who vote BG3(D:OS 3 more likely), probably havent even play it and just go with the flow...
@HonestHick ff16 gameplay was amazing u can really see they put there all into that aspect
Not sure how you can give game of the year to BG3 when it runs so poorly and has so many bugs and I'm only in act one. Because of those issues I'd only give a 6 currently.
Can't help but wonder what the reaction from the more extreme Zelda fans would be in that event. Either would be a good choice but given Breath of the Wild won a few years ago and Baldur's Gate 3 had more going against it I think it deserves it more.
Zelda gets my vote personally but whichever one of those 2 games win will be fully deserving. I don't think the other nominees realistically have a chance.
BG3 is still relatively niche, Tears of the Kingdom and Spider-Man 2 are not. Not sure if the audience is big enough to make it GOTY.
@Drago201 i am enjoying it way more than i thought i would and dare i say it’s one of the prettier games on PS5. This may upset a few, cause i know people are spilt on the Pro console. But i for one like Pro consoles as i love the power game and don’t want to build a $4,000 dollar PC. Not cause i can’t, but because i am a Apple user and don’t love windows. I like the plug and play of console. But my point is if the PS5 Pro is real, i think FF16 would benefit hugely from that power. I mean imagine FF16 running a true 4K/60fps. WOW that would be a stunning game. Sorry for the rant. 😊
@HonestHick rant away I agree with u I myself like pro consoles I got the ps4 pro day one myself and enjoyed it every minute and the boost to performance and resolution it gave me also ff16 as it was intended with high fidelity and performance I'd practically mouth watering 😀
@Drago201 thank you, i agree.i had both the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X. Both were great for my needs. But i understand and know some don’t care for those mid cycle refresh’s . Thing is to me is they don’t hurt or water down their experience. so if they choose to not get one how does it hurt them or their experience with their base console? Sorry i just don’t understand that. I will 1000% get a PS5 Pro if Sony releases it, and i will stand by what i said about FF16. I think that game with the extra muscle of the Pro would be an eye popping experience. I mean to me it looks insanely good now. Let it run 4K/60 and it will be one of many games that gamers can see easily what a Pro console can do.
@HonestHick I agree wholeheartedly especially with the way unreal engine 5 is being handled on console we pretty much need a pro model for stability
@Drago201 agreed UE5 is power hungry and can deliver outstanding results. It’s the engine a lot of games are going to be using. The Pro would for sure help with lighting, fps and other key features.
@Jaz007 true, currently the game es unplayable in act 3 if you started after patch 4.
This game will be fantastic, but right now don't deserve any award.
