Virtual reality has a few major players, and the development house named nDreams is one of them. Having released many well-regarded VR games across various platforms, the studio has just been acquired for about $110 million.
The buyer is Aonic, a "diversified video gaming group" which previously invested $35 million into nDreams for a minority stake. With this acquisition, it has now bought up the team entirely, joining other devs like Warren Spector's OtherSide Entertainment, Milky Tea, and TutoTOONS.
nDreams is the company behind several acclaimed PSVR2 and PSVR games, including Fracked, Synapse, and Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord. Aonic's acquisition will "facilitate nDreams' future investments in third-party publishing and, potentially, more studio acquisitions", the press release reads.
Patrick O'Luanaigh, CEO of nDreams, comments on the move: "We set up nDreams in 2006, pivoted to focus exclusively on VR games in 2013, and we're proud of everything we've achieved as an independent company," he says. "After 18 months of working together, we're confident we've found the right partner in Aonic. This is the right moment to welcome their support to strengthen our position even further, and seize this critical moment for VR and [mixed reality]."
So, all sounds pretty positive, then — although we hope Aonic is keeping one eye on the implosion of Embracer Group and learning some lessons there. Anyway, what do you think of this news? Tell us in the comments section below.

@riceNpea You're very right. I wish I made less grammar mistakes.
Oh look, a weird conglomerate nobody’s heard of is buying up devs. Doesn’t that just fill everybody with confidence.
@Quintumply 😆 thankfully you don't write for a living so it doesn't matter 😆😜
/joking. You're one of the best the site has to offer 😁
Sony could also need some more VR dev teams. Otherwise its PSVR efforts will remain on a low level. Apple will enter the MR market and will probably give it a major boost. And now we’re laughing about the metaverse, but it could really be a thing in the future (okay, maybe not the one from Meta).
Hope this is good for them because I've been playing Synapse and it is probably one of the best PSVR2 titles I've played.
Would love to see a sequel
@LordAinsley Yup. It's that good!
@Quintumply at least we know ur human and not same ai bot mistakes makes us better 🙃
That's a shame as was hoping it was Sony that bought them. Not a fan of another investor group buying up devs after what's happened with Embracer
Let's see how how fast this will go like the Embracer buyers.
I've loved their games so far. Hopefully this will only be positive for them.
Sony missed a trick there🤦🏼♂️
I don’t know, I’ve seen this story before.
1. Mysterious buyer snatches up dev. With dollar signs in their eyes, the buyer touts the acquisition as the ability to “seize this critical moment in VR” (we are here)
2. The buyer gives the dev a shockingly deep budget for their latest game, letting them complete creative and financial control to make the biggest VR game ever.
3. The game is a critical hit at launch
4. One month later the buyer is upset about the game’s sales, previously unaware that VR has a smaller and more niche audience than they thought. They disband the dev, and announce a greater focus on flat gaming after learning the install base of a PS5 alone.
5. They buy a traditional game dev, and with dollar signs in their eyes, tout the acquisition as “seizing a critical moment in gaming.” The cycle begins anew.
Nobody knows if its a good or bad thing untill they announce their plans.
Who know if nDreams output will be heavily dictacted by the investor group or if it just allows them to have bigger budgets?
Only time will tell.
Good for them hopefully as it can offer potential stability.
Give it a year or two, and this team will be laid off and/or the studio shut down, after the parent company “restructures” in order to “meet the demands of the evolving marketplace.”
I hate to be so negative, but with the way 2023 has gone for the industry, it’s hard not to be cynical. All of the people that have lost their jobs so the executives and investors could have a coupla million dollars extra in their pockets.
I wish this developer well! I hope they don’t become another statistic.

I heard Sony was gonna bring back PlayStation Home but make it either a full vr space like Meta or bring it back for all on PlayStation to enjoy but I'm not sure. It could just be just meta competition so that PlayStation owners won't just go their to do their social VR when Sony knows it can bring back Home and make it a VR social platform and it would be awesome I liked the PlayStation Home for PS3 back in the day and it had games you could play within the world as well as the Sims style decorating your little house and you could win cloths and furniture for your home but you also had to buy many things with actual money though I just waited to get the free stuff lol I think they give you some basic things to set yourself up but I guess online places need to make money to keep the servers running 247 so I understand tue need for something like that as its not pay to win or anything, your just buying cloths or home furnishings. You could alter your character to look different with certain things you could win or buy like having wings or devil horns and you know the same thing they have on all those social platforms where you're a character who's talking to strangers or even friends and playing the games within the world but it's fun. I hope they do bring it back because we all need that place again, I haven't been able to get on another one of those social places since I left home way back when. EA should of did this with the Sims and added all that building your houses to it for online because they could of added way more to it by adding things your could buy with money so they could keep the game going but not charge a ton for it that way not everyone has the same things or the same look. I'd like to build and have other people come check it out or rent a room for tokens or something monetary so we could save up to buy in game items decorations or whatever in game maybe let us build for others who aren't so good at it and they would pay us the in game money so that we could use that to buy all the stuff and we could sell whatever at the price we set for the items so that the game has its own economy! That would work for home also but you can't build in that one unless Sony makes it happen which I doubt will ever.
On the bright side, they are still third party.
You say acclaimed PSVR2 games, yet your link to the Ghostbusters review shows you haven't even bothered to review it yet.
@NomNom
Yeah, at least it's not Meta.
