We've said it once and we'll say it again: Vanillaware doesn't miss. The Japanese developer behind fantastic titles like 13 Sentinels, Dragon's Crown, and Odin Sphere is currently putting the finishing touches on its next game, Unicorn Overlord. The fantasy RPG was announced back in September, and it's set to release on the 8th March.
Admittedly, we're already sold. New details on Unicorn Overlord have dropped, revealing that the game will feature over 60 recruitable characters and a dynamic world that you're free to traverse in between main story battles.
"Explore the vast overworld at your leisure, encountering various quests and events. Fight against enemies, liberate and rebuild captured settlements, and prepare your forces to advance even further," reads the official press release.
So, you'll be marching your army around a world map, capturing territories, and reaping the rewards as you go ā all while levelling up your favourite fighters. You'll also be able to try your hand at an ore-mining minigame, apparently.
As for the game's lore, the press release goes pretty in-depth. "The story takes place on the continent of Fevrith, once comprised of five nations: Cornia, Drakenhold, Elheim, Bastorias, and Albion. However, the reborn Zenoiran Empire led by Galerius now dominates the entire continent," it reads. Where would we be without an evil, all-conquering empire to take down?
What's more, we've been handed a boatload of fresh screenshots:

I still need to play their other games but after 13 Sentinels Vanillaware has my full attention
I played Dragon's Crown wayyy back when it released on the PS3 and I really enjoyed it.
I'll have to keep my eyeball on this game.
I love Vanillaware, but this feels like their blandest game to date. The lack of George Kamitani is really noticeable. I'm sure I'll play it eventually, but I just hope they make a new action game soon.
This looks potentially great to me. Hopefully it ends up being a lot of fun.
Vanillaware? Say no more, Iām getting this.
I definitely want this game it's looking š„
Vanillaware games are always cool.more games by them is always welcome.but can we get muramasa the demon blade remastered.word up son
I haven't played any of VanillaWare's games before, but they have my attention! Next year is looking to be great for RPGs
@Enuo i agree that there is a certain blandness with the art direction as compared to vanillaware's previous work. but what you said about George Kamitani is news to me. do you have a confirming source that he was not involved with this project? that would be very unfortunate.
@The_Pixel_King to be honest, their games do not demand the latest hardware and performance. ps4 would run muramasa just fine indeed. but yes, muramasa deserves the remaster treatment next.
I still haven't seen enough gameplay to make a decision. Everything else doesn't matter until then.
@The_Pixel_King i see. yea, it even looks good on the wii via a crt tv. their 2d art scales up to hd very well.
I've only played one Vanillaware game, Dragon's Crown (and Dragon's Crown Pro, so two games depending on how you count). I really liked it, so I will definitely look into the others.
Are pre-orders open? I only pre-order Vanillaware games, and this will be no exception.
Edit: Just pre-ordered it š
