Update: Sony has updated the PlayStation website with illuminating new details about this firmware update. Here're the official patch notes:
- This system software update improves system performance.
We can all rest easy, now.
Original Story: The best way to start the day is with a hearty breakfast a fresh new PS5 firmware update. Today, 8th November 2023, Sony has provided us with just that, although it's just a minor one. The latest system software update for PS5 is available to download and install now, but it's not entirely clear what it does.
Weighing in at roughly 851MB, the firmware update appears not to be mandatory, and it doesn't even have any patch notes to speak of — not even the old faithful "improves system performance". After we updated our console with this update, it didn't restart as it normally would, either. It seems likely this includes a security fix to prevent people from hacking the console, but that's purely speculative on our part. If any further info comes out about this update, we'll let you know.
Anyway, it's probably best to just get this installed to be on the safe side. If you've left your PS5 in Rest mode, you might not even notice this update at all. Will you be starting your day the right way with this new PS5 firmware? Tell us what you had for breakfast in the comments section below.

If this isn't a stability increasing update then I'm not sure I want it.
Porridge with blueberries.
I think the only thing I’ve noticed so far (I could be wrong) is the shutdown animation of a silhouette of a vertical PS5 now has full length led’s to reflect the look of the new PS5 which I believe run the full length of the system now,oh and sparkles I don’t remember sparkles at least not as many if there was any at all,again I could be wrong about this but that’s all I’ve noticed so far.
@Futureshark snap! Me as well! Om nom nom👍🏻
Speculation: Maybe it includes an updated Bad Words list. While the Switch needs a full restart, here it could be realised without.
Anyone wondering. They finally fully hacked ps5. It's now fully possible to play ps5 games from backups.
Not sure if I can link videos to YouTube ,but check modded warfare on YouTube. He has all the info on how it works.
These updates are now just to keep step above the custom firmware, like it was the case with PS3 and PS4.
@Futureshark Lovely.
@Pixel_nme Yes I also noticed that the shutdown and sleep animations have changed. As you mentioned it appears to reflect the new PS5 system silhouette.
@fido thanks for the confirmation i’m not going mad lol 👍
Isn't this the update that makes the PS5 shrink?
@Pixel_nme I noticed that last night, just had a brief glance at my TV as my PS5 shutdown and thought to myself it looked different, thought it was lack of sleep at first. 🤣
@Zombiesfeelpain 😂
I want an update that turns the PS5 into a PS6 by use of magic pixie dust and f@arts
I'm jealous of my PS5. Why can't I get a stability update?
@DrVenture69 cough splut gazz!ng ✨ 🧞
This has been the moment we have all been waiting for! We can finally say that in 2023, the PS5 has achieved perfection with this update. I will be bronzing my faceplates in honor of this amazing update and all that it achieves. I shall bow before the all mighty performing PS5 every morning before I do anything.
Thank you, Sony!
@NeonPizza Yes, that broken TV HDMI 'kick' is so annoying - I mean how can they get something that basic wrong? Turn off TV obviously means turn on the PS5 and switch the TV back on again! Gaaah!
The sparkles is the PS4's friendly and useful UI burning up to be replaced by the slab of drab that is the PS5 dash!
@NeonPizza I found that if I change TV input / source before switching it off, it doesn't automatically boot up the PS5 when I turn TV back on. It's only if I've left it on the same HDMI input as the PS5 that mine switches back on.
Still annoying that you have to remember to do that though!
Ah finally get to use Themes.. nice
/s
The new rest mode/shutdown animations have been there for a couple of days for me, so they weren't part of this update.
@Pranwell We've got a Sony Bravia 1080p and it does the same with that. Recently upgraded to a LG 4K TV and the same thing happens.
PS4 Pro connected to the same TVs just works properly.
@NeonPizza Yes, the 'music' is just dire. But it's all or nothing if you turn it off as then you don't get the game music when you drift over the game icons because at least that cuts out the funeral dirge.
@Panic_Attache Yes, I've found that if the TV has been left on the PS5 HDMI when it's powered off, restarting the TV causes the PS5 to start up so you have to wait for it to start, get depressed by its miserable UI before shutting it down again!
I've taken to changing the TV's HDMI input back to the Freesat box that we have after closing The Tub o' Lard down.
my ps4 and ps5 after all the updates are more stable than a nuclear reactor ps5 folders would be a better update
All this stability makes me wonder y it's so unstable in the 1st place
And now i get a slight pause when my ps5 boots up..about 1 sec before it displays the home page almost as if it hangs for a mo. Not a huge thing but was enough for me to notice it.
I can no longer open hyperlinks from chat messages.
I used to send myself a link to Google & open it to use the browser....
Not anymore!
