Baldur's Gate 3 has been out for three months now, and developer Larian has published some mind-bending player statistics to celebrate. As you may already know, this is a big RPG, featuring god-knows how many unique paths through its story ā and so these stats make for especially interesting reading if you're familiar with the game.
We've gone ahead and compiled the craziest stats into the following list:
- 1.3 million players have completed the game (which is honestly astonishing considering its overall length)
- A whopping 94% of players created a custom character instead of playing as one of the game's premade cast
- Of the small percentage of players who actually chose to play as a premade character, Gale is most popular, followed by Astarion, Karlach, Shadowheart, Wyll, and Lae'zel in that order
- A combined 8,196 years have been spent in the character creator (picking a class is hard, picking a hairstyle is harder)
- Paladin is the most popular class, followed by sorcerer, fighter, rogue, barbarian, warlock, wizard, bard, druid, monk, ranger, and cleric, in that order
- Elf is the most popular race, followed by human, half-elf, tiefling, drow, dragonborn, half-orc, githyanki, dwarf, gnome, and halfling, in that order
- Shadowheart is the most popular romantic interest with 51% of players reaching the end of her romance arc, followed by Karlach and then Lae'zel
- When presented with the choice, 66% of players have asked Halsin to not be in his, er... bear form for that particularly popular romance scene
- Players have spent a combined 51,662 years playing Baldur's Gate 3
Where do you fit in with all of these stats? Give us all the details of your class choices, romantic partners, and anything else you can think of in the comments section below.

Happy for Baldur's Gate and Larian - insane game from amazing devs.
And even happier for Scratch! Petted him every time I've visited the camp with no exceptions.
This website always underestimates the time people are willing to commit to a game or game series when it's actually worth investing time into.
So, they've spent 8,196 years in the character creator and 51,662 years playing the game. I mean...
@naruball That will be become a massive issue for me. Even with Dark Souls im busy a long time and make a new character because I don't like how she looks in certain light. š
The most incredible stat to me is this :
"By Act 2, 30,4% of players have given in to their illithid side and flexed their powers."
I interpret it this way : presented with new very good powers, people were so deep into the role playing they didn't make the "gamer decision" of minmaxing their character. Really impressive!
This or people just couldn't trust the Emperor...
@Flaming_Kaiser I get it, but considering how massive the game is, it's pretty ridiculous. Turns out the memes about people spending more time creating a character than actually playing the game weren't jokes after all.
@naruball And most of that was me.
Absolutely loved the game, which I finished about a month or so ago. I played the game solo and my run exceeded 300 hours, and I loved every minute of it.
I'm also playing a co-op game with two mates in which we are all playing as Origin characters. Funny enough though, we are apparently playing as the 3 least popular characters; Wyll, Shadowheart and Lae'Zel. š
The game is seriously good, and I am looking forward to my next solo run, which I will start in the New Year as I don't want to start something now, and then have to put the game down for the Christmas period.
Really hoping that Larian and Baldur's Gate 3 win every award that they are nominated for. They are a fantastic studio who are fully invested in their community, and the game is simply sublime. For me, it is the game of a lifetime, and I've been gaming for approaching 50 years... š
Can't believe Astarion wasn't higher in the Romance charts lol!!
Such a gas lad, having a blast with him in my gang
@naruball I was thinking the same. That's about 15% of game time picking a character. I haven't played it but I would be a default character all day long. Character creation is just frustrating for me so I avoid it as much as I can in games other than picking a bright hair colour. Takes the edge of in serious scenes.
@Marquez haha. Nice!
@Fiendish-Beaver How did you get to 300 hours for one playthrough?!
My first playthrough was quite thorough, and I may have missed one or two minor places to visit, but I genuinely tried to do everything and ended up with 120 hours... more than twice that time, I really wonder if I missed a whole another game within the game?! : )
And apparently the options for the character creator are quite limiting too - body wise.
@naruball that actually works out at 11 hours per player in character creation screen(20% completion rate on steam x 1.3M completed gives sales number of 6.5M players roughly). Iām kind of suspicious of that number to be honest š
I always liked when BioWare put out stats like this when they made good games.
And theres me only just off the beach and gone through the old building meeting the skeleton in the tomb. Withers i think his name is.
Honestly couldn't tell you, @Olmaz. I know I went everywhere and did everything to the best of my ability. I spoke with pretty much everyone, picked up all the small quests etc. I know that I missed one small fight in Act 1 (because I have since done it with my mates in our co-op game) but I honestly couldn't tell you why my run was so long compared to yours. I did reload the game many times to get the outcome on rolls that I wanted, or when a battle was not going well, which likely added more time to my game. I also did each of the Origin characters quests to completion, which obviously took time.
In some ways, I envy your game completion time because I would happily go through more quickly so that I could try different builds, and different types of runs (bad, kill absolutely everyone, no reloads etc.). At 300 hours a run, it would take me forever! 120 hours would be much more manageable... š
Don't fit in it at all. I hate turn based gaming....
@KennethKoerperich88 It upsets me that I am the same way. Have never enjoyed a turn-based game long term. I've tried over the years but it always bothers me. Sucks, because so so many good things about BG3.
I ca t believe 66% of BG3 players are liars or cowards. Iād love to see if people have petted Scratch more than the owlbear cub.
I definitely petted Scratch more than the Owlbear cub, @Hyena_socks. Owlbear's lines never seemed to alter once s/he was in the camp. Nor did Scratch's, but at least he did give some small rewards every now and again.
Now someone is going to pop up and tell me that Owlbear was worth petting too... š
@naruball Ok that quite insane but I love to spend a lot of time with making a character.
