Expect some pretty impressive musical performances to emerge from two of PS5’s biggest games in 2024, as both The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will allow players to unleash their creativity. The anticipated titles – scheduled to release as PS5 exclusives – both feature musical minigames, and they sound surprisingly deep.
Game Informer’s exclusive cover story opened the lid on Rebirth’s in-depth piano playing mechanic earlier this week. “Through exploration, Cloud can find sheet music for compositions within the Final Fantasy 7 world,” the magazine explains. “He can then sit at a piano and play the music. This rhythm-based minigame has you use the analogue sticks to play the required notes, plus some of the buttons to change octaves and keys.”
The key detail here is that there’s also a freeplay mode where you’re able to create your own compositions. “[Director Naoki Hamaguchi] then pulls up a video showing a developer playing a popular Japanese song on the piano, complete with a video of her hands. Watching her hands fly around the DualSense controller is a sight to behold”
What’s interesting is that Naughty Dog has happened upon a similar feature. You may recall the guitar minigame from The Last of Us: Part 2, which was quite basic in the PS4 original. The Sony developer has significantly expanded this feature for the remaster, as introduced on Twitter:
As noted above, you can add effects pedals, adjust the lighting, and even incorporate different instruments. All of this is likely to result in some really compelling virtual performances, as fans get to grips with the features. But the thing we’re really looking forward to here are the inevitable compositions which incorporate the minigames from both The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth at the same time.

I have no interest in this at all so they better not lock the platinum behind it.
@LifeGirl depends if it's a easy trophy to get. I still have nightmares of the gym trophy in remake.
Can't wait for the crazy talented players to make Ellie and Cloud duet videos

Ah there's only one last of us game #joels the hero
Gonna make a sombre cover of Agadoo
Is Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered really one of 2024's biggest titles?
Wow. I love that they’re doing that for Rebirth.
Oh, my bad for criticizing ND remastering The Last of Us Part II. Expanding the guitar minigame makes it all worthwhile. Take whatever money you want from me now, Sony...
@BrotherFriede I'd rather see a Tchia x PaRappa the Rapper collab 😁
@Martijn87
Yeah I didn’t like doing that mini game, the final one was hard as heck
@Ravix I was legit just about to comment that Tchia deserved a mention here, although it’s not a 2024 game. A Tchia x PaRappa collab would be rad.
If the yet another naughty dog recycled content release is considered one of the biggest releases of 2024, we have problems.
@AK4tywill hell no it's not. Yet ps fans and especially the sites that market for them are in the denial phase regarding our beloved platform. Thus, they write and comment on puff piece after puff piece trying to assure the Fandom that the state of playstation and it's studios isn't as stale and mismanaged as they truly are.
@AK4tywill It is one of the few first party releases that we know about in 2024? In that context I guess you could make that claim?
@KundaliniRising333 With you on this one. It blows my mind that we had no less than three different versions of the first game in the span of ten years, and now a remake of the second game at less than five years old. FFVIIR has its own faults, to be sure, but it at least gets some small merit in that it’s a “remake” of a nearly 30 year old game (that, let’s be honest, doesn’t hold up as well as it used to, even if it is undeniably a classic).
@awaltzforvenus totally agree. I'm looking forward to seeing how Rebirth turns out for sure but another re release from naughty dog is just shameful at this point.
@LazyLombax Helldivers 2, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade....
Definitely bout to go all in on those piano lessons
Those segments in TLOU2 were unforgettable! Love these types of integrations and will be eager to try both of them out in the new year.
@InsaneWade The guitar minigame is bigger than anything they did for The Last of Us Part 1. $10 is now an insane value!
again...
The fact there's a piano minigame in FF7 gives me fresh hope that the Pool Table in the bar in Costa Del Sol will also be a minigame.
Oh, and the football outside!
@LazyLombax If we're not going to classify games as exclusive simply because they also release on PC then Xbox doesn't have any at all. That makes no sense. PC is a different category and doesn't really matter in this context. Regardless HD2 is a console exclusive, if you want to be picky word it that way.
