We know the PS1 classics being added to PS Plus Premium from 16th January include Rally Cross and Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace – but Sony may have accidentally leaked another upcoming retro release. Mentioned on PlayStation UK’s Twitter account before promptly being removed, the 2001 survival horror Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is apparently slated for an emulated release on PS5 and PS4.
Adding further fuel to the speculation, the game was included in a round up on semi-official YouTube channel PlayStation Access, before the video was edited to remove mention of the old-school Infogrames outing. Clearly this game is scheduled to launch as part of Sony’s subscription service in the future, it’s just PlayStation UK shared the information early by mistake. It’d probably make sense to launch prior to the Alone in the Dark reboot, which is officially due out on 20th March.
The New Nightmare was a hit at the time, although its Game Boy Color conversion is probably the most memorable of its versions, as it retained the 3D pre-rendered backdrops of its console peers – an impressive achievement for Nintendo’s handheld. A PS2 version did launch later in 2001 exclusively in Europe, but given the state of Sony’s emulation efforts, we’re not expecting that version to be made available on PS5 and PS4 – in fact, the aforementioned PS Access video specifically showed the PS1 box art.

Loved this game on PS1. The physical copy is still here somewhere.
It's the only Alone in the Dark game I ever played, but I remember it felt very fresh to me at the time after a generation of playing Resident Evil and Silent Hill. The torch/lighting mechanic was great.
This game is so classic. The only AIone in the dark I have ever played. I remember playing it on Dreamcast back in 2001. Memories.
I played the original alone in the dark 1-3 games but not this one. Is it similar to the original PC games?
@CharlieChooChoo Definitely do. It's probably aged by now of course, but if you're a fan of horror games at all it's worth giving it a go.
This is one of those games I remember playing as a child and loving, but I never got very far. I just don't think I was particularly good at it. If there's an option to purchase this standalone, then I'm 100% in.
Iv'e heard many good things about this series over the years but I can't say I'll buy into PS Plus until something like the Sly Cooper games become available (this is in my country btw)
still, I defo really want to play this series one day despite not being big on horror games.
I played lady momjeans campaign on the Dreamcast a few years back. Good fun was had. I look forward to playing moody man’s campaign whenever this get rereleased.
Oh yes, love ps1 horror
The backdrops in this game are 2D, not 3D.
Man I wish these 3rd party classics were getting trophies.
@Shepherd_Tallon I'm a little confused. Did you play it a decade after it was released? Cause wasn't AITD: NN released around the same time as Silent Hill, save for a few years?
@ArashiKageTaro
The first Resident Evil on PS1 was out in 1996.
Silent Hill on PS1 was released in 1999.
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare on PS1 was released in 2001.
There were 4 Resident Evil games and 1 Silent Hill game by the time New Nightmare came out. I had played all five of them to death by 2001.
New Nightmare came at the exact right time for me.
I just installed this, along with a load of other PS classics, onto the PS3, so I’m good.
Likely being added ahead of the Alone in the Dark reboot, which is awesome. I really hope Alone in the Dark can find its way back to being a great series. Survival Horror has had an incredible resurgence and I hope it continues.
@Shepherd_Tallon Ah.. Gotcha! Thx for the explanation. Was a bit confused at first lol.
