It looks janky as heck in this debut trailer, but there’s certainly promise in the Shibuya-set REYNATIS. Announced during the Japanese edition of this week’s Nintendo Direct, but coming to both PS5 and PS4, the FuRyu published affair is being helmed by high-profile Square Enix alumni Kazushige Nojima, Yoko Shimomura, and Yasutaka Kaburagi.
The premise isn’t exactly original, but it’s a compelling one. Set in modern-day Tokyo where magic exists, two protagonists clash over whether these powers should be used freely without constraint – or bound by order. It looks like this will factor into the gameplay, as when you’re exploring the civilised world, using any magic will see you suppressed by a police-like faction known as the MEA.
It’s all a bit Harry Potter in terms of plot, but the art direction is 100 per cent Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. There’s no worldwide release confirmed yet, but considering how scrappy the first gameplay footage looks, we reckon this might end up better once the developer’s had a bit of time to patch it up a bit. Nevertheless, the Japanese date, as mentioned in the trailer, is locked for 25th July.

Doesn't look very Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts to me. I mean sure, it looks like jRPG style.
But I think there's a bit more cell shading and outlines and stuff than what is typical for a Final Fantasy or Kingdom heart game. Looks good though..
But the music definitely sounds like something Yoko Shimomura (The Kingdom Heart/Final Fantasy XV composer) could have written. Dramatic orchestral music with emphasis on piano and choir is what she does best.
Edit: I didn't read the entire article lol, I guess I was right about it sounding like Shimomura
It's FuRyu. Expect AA jank. Their last title Crymachina was conceptually great, however okay in delivery at best
Oh great, another mediocre-looking Furyu game after the two Caligula Effects, Monark, and Crymachina...
I'll probably buy it though!
Well I'm at least extremely interested in the soundtrack given that the goddess herself Yoko Shimomura is working on this ^__^
"the art direction is 100 per cent Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts"
No, it's not
Art looks more Korean than Japanese to me
It screams "modern Final Fantasy settings" to me. Games like FF7 Rebirth and FF15.
Welp need to watch the Japanese Nintendo direct. May have more games to add to the wishlist.
looks more like astral chain to me with some 2014 graphics
I can tolerate jank (one of my favorite games last year was Wanted: Dead) as long as there are enough redeeming qualities in the gameplay, the story is fun and the music deliver. We'll see what happens, there are some talented people involved with the game.
