Sony has confirmed it's cancelled "some" unannounced games at PlayStation Studios, and according to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, one of them is the long-rumoured Twisted Metal game from Firesprite. The journalist reports the project was in "early development" and hadn't been greenlit by Sony to go into full production yet, according to a source.
Speculation dating as far back as September 2021 has suggested a new Twisted Metal title is in development, having first started out at Descrution AllStars developer Lucid Games before being handed to UK team Firesprite. Until today's report, it had been a number of years since any new speculative details were shared, but with the game series getting a successful TV adaptation and the go-ahead to produce a second season, it was assumed the video game was still in production. Following the claim the game was still in "early development" until today's cancellation, though, it's unclear how much of that was actually true.
The news comes as Sony cuts 900 employees from its PlayStation division so it can "future ready ourselves to set the business up for what lies ahead". Blood & Truth team London Studio has been shut down in its entirety, and Firesprite has been downsized. Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, and Guerrilla Games have also been affected by the layoffs.

The fact this game hadn't even been green lit yet is crazy to me, I've been assuming its a game close to being released for a while now.
They should just do a remake of 2 or black. Maybe even expanded it.
@Oh_fiddlesticks yeah I feel like we've been hearing about this since 2020.
Cancelling games but not the movies.come on sony.word up son
Hopefully the Horizon MMO hasn't been cancelled.
Expect another dry PlayStation Showcase this year, folks!
It’s for the best. Twisted Metal would probably turn out like Destruction All-Stars. Gaming just isn’t in that style of space anymore in 2024
Sony’s so smart for developing adaptations of Twisted Metal and Gravity Rush and then just… cancelling their games and not making follow ups. Brilliant move Jimmy Ryan
@Krydle by, Guerilla is consulting but that’s it.
Looks like all of the layoffs had to do with live service titles.
Bringing Twisted Metal back is a great idea, making it a live service that requires tons of resources is lunacy.
All they had to do was make a AA mid budget game like the old ones or just remake the classics and it would have sold perfectly fine, but everything has to be this live service crap. This industry!
AA and indie carrying modern gaming as usual. AAA games are trash.
@Krydle guerilla is working on a co-op horizon and nsoft is working on a separate online MMO focusing on mobile/pc.
Well now we know which Firespirite game is done. Bummer, the rumor was they were going to have a VR mode which would've been cool, still more excited that their original narrative horror game though...hopefully still in the works.
Wow I didn’t call this at all. Never could have seen this coming. The real killer is how many employees are suffering from execs’ stupid decisions.
We don’t need more live service garbage.
Looks like Sony is slowly realising that games like Fortnight and Roblox cannot be unseated. They're more like platforms in their own right now anyway, offering different experiences depending on what you want to do, even if it is just hang out with friends. If I was a customer who had spent £00s or £000s in one of these games, why on earth would I switch to a different game and mothball that 'investment'?
as someone who despises most GaaS model games, twisted metal was one of the few cases that actually fit and could have thrived under the service model. there are literally no vehicular combat games of this type in existance for modern platforms. all we have is mario kart and CTR (which are obviously very different) so twisted metal would have filled a very specific niche. sony likely has another 10 service games currently in development that should be cancelled, but i don't think this should have been one of them.
The one popular IP that makes a ton of sense to turn into a Live Service game and they cancel it.
I feel like leveraging the single-player games into multiplayer is just shoehorning to chase trends. Twisted Metal is perfect for the Live Service gameplay.
This would have been a HUGE hit if it was made!
I don't personally like Twisted Metal, but this would have had mass appeal, I think. Plus, I don't feel like it would have been one of those games that requires hundreds of millions to make.
Sony out here canceling potential hits but then dropping one box office dud after another. Make it make sense.
A live service game cancelled?!?!?!?!?! NO! Say it ain’t so……
This is literally the only known live service project that makes sense in that model. Jesus Sony. I really hope they did cancel the Horizon Live service scheme though.
PS had a hub-style live-service IP, and it was called PS Home. Now other developers will easily beat them to the punch on the Ready Player One style model. That's the sad thing about all this live service 'will they, won't they?'
If they had a fully functioning PS Home framework, and developed smaller titles to launch from that, they could keep engagement high and make all kinds of smaller live service games using their current IP's and bringing new indie developers in for other stuff, and it might not cost the world or get in the way of other development, or follow the lame Bungie live service idealism.
Okay, I decided to focus on "Live service" and "Cancelled'.
Cool.
Its been 12 years for the last Twisted metal, I remember in 2012 i said damn its been 7 years for the last twisted metal, and i was complaining and looks like now its over for ever.
At the end the games of our time is dying and games in general too with the movies.
Yep as I thought, theyre undoing him Ryan's live push.
Expect bungie to be absorbed and "reorganized " after they release marathon
Dang. Between Last of Us online and now Twisted metal. That is 2 of my most wanted games on PS5 that are cancelled and not coming out. Thats not to say there still won’t be plenty of stuff to play on PS5 for me. But i play and buy all my 3rd party title on Xbox. My PS and Nintendo hardware are just for the exclusives. Hate to see so many of these games being canned but if it means people working on other projects that will be better, then I guess that is the message i need to take from this. I have faith in Sony to get this generation right, but they are starting to run out of time.
@StrickenBiged That Fortnite racing mode makes a live service TW a harder sell I'd imagine. £70 for that, or just keep playing Fortnite?
This is good, Twisted Metal should never be a live service game.
@Ravix Sony has a bad habit of being early to the party on these things, then dropping out too soon.
@Anthony_Daniels I'm guessing aside from the 2 upcoming ones officially announced the live service games are all facing the can now.
@somnambulance really looked forward to Destruction Allstars but it was so empty and soulless. I tried my best to like
Sony canceled one of the most anticipated game but not that awful television series that no one was asking for.
bro i’m absolutely done, pardon me but screw sony . just go back to milking the same third person cinematic template that these hacks are only capable of and outsourcing their IPs as tv shows instead of games. playstation legacy is dead .
NOOOOOOO! I need more Twisted Metal!!!
Gee,if only they had some of the classic games to use as a design model, have old & possibly new characters for a reboot & split screen/co-op & online modes ala the classic Need For Underground or Midnight Club series.🤔
Although its a bit easy to sometimes build some predecessors overtly,at least with a Shu Yoshida, or Shawn Layden you could tell by their interviews how they had a deep knowledge & appreciation of a fair few of those legacy titles, something which (just my two cents worth),I've struggled to get a read of Hermen Hulst on. 🤔
Another multilayer live service trash. Good riddance.
