When Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance launches on PS5 and PS4 this June, you will be able to choose between two different campaigns: the original one seen on Nintendo Switch or an updated one that contains a new story, areas, and demons to fight. It's a decision you'll need to make at the start of your playthrough, with the original version referred to as the Canon of Creation while the new campaign is named Canon of Vengeance.
Both stories are said to be the same — or at least very similar — in the beginning, but will differentiate massively as you approach the middle and the end. The new campaign will introduce entirely new characters, a new faction of demons called the Qadištu, and there'll be an extra dungeon and map to master. On top of those extras, the battle system, demon merging mechanic, and general exploration have all been "expanded".
You'll be able to pre-order the game on the PS Store from 27th February 2024, with the full game launching for PS5, PS4 on 21st June. Will you opt for the original campaign or the new one? Share your decision in the comments below.

So they've basically just remade the narrative from scratch and stapled on the original campaign as a bonus.
Curious to see if the Vengeance route has an actual story this time. The "Canon of Creation" branch seems like it'll be a Nocturne-esque minimalist horror-fantasy at first, but it's literally just under-developed. It's a shame, because SMT V is Atlus' most ambitious product to date from a design standpoint. Literally the first MegaTen to feel like it was designed around hardware stronger than the PS3 (as well as the Nintendo Switch, judging by how poorly the original game often ran). It does so much right, but the narrative aspects are embarrassingly bad. If the new route can address this flaw, it'll be a must-own JRPG.
This sounds great. I beat the game originally on the Nintendo Switch and had a fantastic time with it. I might pick this up and try the new campaign for a fresh experience. I’m glad to see they are providing more content for the game for existing players as well.
Shame on me for still not knowing better with SMT V, but I am officially done buying any of these games at their original release…
Was really hoping they were gonna better flesh out the war for the throne cause that had so much potential to be insane
And the talks of this new vengeance campaign being an extra 80 hrs on top of the base game is so confusing
That's nice. For people who played the game on Switch, it will be more than a replay with better graphics.
@Ralizah It sounds like at least a third of the game is the same as the original campaign, so I don't understand how that equals completely remaking the campaign from scratch.
@LikelySatan I believe I heard the changes begin extremely early on, so it's definitely not a third of the game that's the same. The majority of the game was remade in this new campaign, seemingly. Which, sadly, was possibly the only way to actually fix the narrative issues in the original release.
So many good jrpgs releasing this year and 3 of them from Atlus. I'm glad SMT is still going strong alongside Persona as I do prefer the overall tone of the former. Looking forward to this seemingly hefty re-release!
Never played much of the original on the switch I beat the second boss and never got round to continuing on.
I’ll definitely be getting the PS5 version though possibly for my birthday since it’s out close to it.
I’ll probably go normal campaign first then the new one for a new game plus playthrough
@Ralizah they've said that it's the middle and end they've changed.
