January seems to have been a strong month for Sony, at least in Europe. According to data pulled together by GamesIndustry, last month saw successes for the platform holder in terms of both software and hardware β not a bad way to kick off 2024.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered did very well digitally and physically, apparently outweighing the launch of The Last of Us Part I by two and half times. In its favour was an upgrade path from the PS4 version, and the fact that there are more PS5s in homes than there were when Part I arrived, but it's an impressive result nonetheless. It was January's biggest launch for a new game, but it was EA Sports FC 24 that took the top spot on the software chart overall.
In terms of hardware, PS5 improved year-on-year thanks to vastly improved availability, and it's the only console on the up. Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series consoles were all down in January, putting Sony in a very healthy position.
Did you nab a PS5 last month? What games were you buying for it? Tell us in the comments section below.

I thought no one liked this game? How odd.
Maybe it being 30 quid cheaper helped too?
Itβs only that high because all the newer games like Tekken and the likes came out in late January.
@Shad361 It came out on the 19th, Tekken was the 26th so it only had 1 week advantage. Plus it was a remaster of an old game whilst tekken was a brand new game so should of done better really.
It's a great game, well deserved. Also, $10 upgrade path is the way to go for these re-releases, and I'm glad data is backing that up.
As far as the story goes though, sometimes it feels like people need to be reminded Joel is a fictional character in a game used to advance the plot. Events that transpire do that exceptionally well, it's supposed to s*ck and feel like a gut punch.
@UltimateOtaku91 February sales will give the full picture
@Cloud39472 don't mistake peoples whining and crying for hate, they just didn't agree with the story, but at then end of the day ain't ***** they could do about it, the game is/was stellar overall so there was no doubt it would sell again in an upgraded version with surprisingly fun rogue light
@Loamy You literraly undermined your own claim when you stated it is a game that caused a chunk of the fanbase to want it removed from existence. Since the purpose of a game is to entertain, if it is causes a significant portion of its fanbase to hate it then it has failed in its purpose. So it is objectively NOT Playstations best game.
You could make an argument that Astro's Playroom is their best game because everyone loves it.
@Uromastryx oh I know, I was just being sarcastic. I love the game and have always known that it's just a loud minority on the Internet. Glad to see it's still thriving.
@Loamy @Ambassador_Kong
The game is objectively a masterpiece whether you love it or hate it, though.
Havenβt touch my ps5 since i got my steam deck oled π.
Part 1 was 70Β£

@Loamy saying he last of us 2 is so ya best game is a pretty big claim.
Especially the PT1 was better and probably uncharted 4 as well
Absolute masterpiece. Loving replaying it.
The Last of US Pt.II sold well so it must be time for the Mental Gymnastics world championships again.
Perfection is thy name.
My kids say I should but I got bored of unchartered and this is the same but with infected enemies. Just like unchartered had infected enemies...
Would not mind the remakes from ND
If they gave us a new game as well.
Uncharted 4 team 7 years and counting.
Best selling βnewβ game π
@Ambassador_Kong I would argue the purpose of a game is to engage the player not necessarily entertain. But really different games have different goals.
@Slippship itβs not really at all. Not saying you should play it if you dont want to but it is very much not like uncharted.
@OldGamer999 It's not like the Uncharted 4 team hasn't done anything since then, as many of them were surely the same people as those working on Lost Legacy and then The Last of Us 2.
But i thought everyone hated TLoUP2? Guess not π
@DennisReynolds good result - the first game was a masterpiece and this couldn't possibly fall too far from that greatness.
This is what makes Sony so special, the mass market appeal of quality AAA exclusive blockbusters.
@DennisReynolds only the terminally online and politically rabid.
It's one of Naughty Dog's best selling games. It's in the top 10 top selling PlayStation games, as well.
@Ainu20
Yes probably some on lost legacy but not sure about last of us 2 thought that used the second team.
Anyway millions of employe hours since and nothing to play from ND.
Hang on forgot, ND the remake company.
30 responses with 1 intention, to hate on other people's opinions... (Well, here's to one more. I will now critique other people's opinion on other people's opinions and it shall be glorious and it will make us all come together in harmony.)
The worst of you guys is Matt Booth who won't even admit that it is a divisive game. The studio says it, and the constant bickering on here suggests it.
The same guys here who are parading the fact that it sold 2.5 times more copies than the remake of the first. You forget that it has existed for 3 console generations and have been rereleased 3 times. The last time it cost 70 dollars. So TLOU2 would have to sell 7 upgrades to match one, however there are bound to be newcomers who pay full price which makes it a little more even. But you might argue that pt. I has reached more people and made more money overall.
Enjoy your brilliant game, guys, and live and let live. Cheers π
I bought a PS5 last month, so yep... I'm part of the statistics, but not in Europe, since i live in Brazil. Having a great time with my PS5, just like i had with PS1-PS4
The critical discourse over this release was not largely over the initial release backlash narrative toward this game. It was over the fact that it was yet another rerelease other than something new. A trend Sony and co have milked for a great deal of this generation. It was a decent game with terrible pacing and overstayed it's welcome.
However, that aside many are growing extremely tired of these remasterakes and phoned in clone sequels, especially when new titles from the platform are apparently in a considerable drought.
The fact that this was a mere $10 upgrade being compared to full price releases in terms of sales results is pretty ridiculous.
So people complain they don't want remasters but then games like this shoot to #1.... internet people are funny. Clearly somebody wanted the remaster.
@pharos_haven it's actually number 2 behind EA FC 24
@KundaliniRising333 Are people growing tired when they sell? Reddit and Pushsquare's community but us lot are a small minority and going by sales its clear people do want them. Anyway this week saw Helldivers 2 a new 1st party release, opinions on the game aside its still something new as well as being a departure from the first entry. A remaster made by a handful of interns doesn't effect ND's new game currently being made.
Again, proving that this game isn't hated the way some people might tell you it is.
@GeminiReign I think that is how you are supposed to feel. Just like, you are supposed to feel angry and hurt and to want revenge on Abby at all costs. It's just that a few people never moved on from that point (or, let's be real here, probably didn't actually even play the game at all).
I'll never forget how this game made me feel when I finally finished it, I dont think I played a game for about a week! It was absolutely brutal from "that" point in the story, It didnt even feel like a game at points, more like you were just existing in the experience and seeing it play it out.
Such an experience of a game and im glad they told they story they did in the way that they did, I dont think there will ever be anything like it for a long time.
I'm looking forward to playing it for the first time but, seriously, Sony, give us something new please.
Nice! Sony continues to do well while Xbox is crumbling right before our eyes. π
@__jamiie I agree that it's time we see what else new they are working on. But at least TLOU2 remastered gives a plethora of new content and isn't just a straight port of TLOU2.
Just finished this again.. such a masterpiece.
Removed - trolling/baiting
Not really surprised PS5 are up. TLoU Part II only cost $10 to get if you already own the first and this re-release did have some cool new game modes added. Then there's the two big multiplats, Tekken and Like a Dragon, that released to critical acclaim and are associated with PlayStation far more than anything else. Now we're not too far away from another heavy hitter in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth this month. PS5 sales should continue to rise and there won't be real competition until Nintendo is ready with Switch 2.
It's a good game so not surprised. I'll be buying it on PC to play on my Steam Deck OLED however.
