Update: Here we are, then: the inevitable apology tour. Aspyr has issued an update on its disastrous Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection launch, which can be purchased full-price on PS5 and PS4 right now. "At launch, we experienced critical errors with our network infrastructure," a statement reads. "The result was incredibly high ping, matchmaking errors, crashes, and servers not appearing in the browser."
It adds: "Since launch, we’ve been working to address these issues and increase network stability, and we will continue our efforts until our network infrastructure is stabilised to prevent further outages."
Of course, despite the crippling issues, the game can still be purchased at full-price from the PS Store.
Original Article: Where’s our Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection review? Well, it’s coming, but we’re happy we sat tight beyond the pre-release embargo, because the servers are on fire now the title is publicly available. Aspyr is being attacked by irate fans for the state of the game, which is struggling massively with server capacity and has a “mostly negative” rating on Steam right now. For the record, the PlayStation performance is not much better.
Fans noticed around launch that there were only three 64-player servers available, and while Aspyr has been quick to respond, the release is still suffering from various connectivity and performance bugs. A massive patch has been issued on PS5 and PS4 to try and put out the fires, and we’ll be testing that out before submitting our review.
While online play was available to us during the review period, the servers were largely empty and we opted to wait until the public release before attaching a score to the title. We’ll bring you our verdict as fast as we can, but for now we’d probably recommend pumping the brakes before you purchase this – it looks like Aspyr has got a lot of post-release work to do.

The fact that the devs have only three servers for a game like this is hilarious.
I decided to buy the original version of the game on Steam for $2 since a lot of reviews for this collection say the original has a ton of mod support and really active multiplayer.
Thank the heavens I went for the Steam version on this and I can get a refund.
Props to waiting to review the game. Pure Xbox and other places rushed a review even though half the game wasn't online
Honestly, just want this for split screen. If that’s good then I’m happy.
I’m ignorant of these things, so please go easy on me, but how many servers should a game of this magnitude have? What does a game like Helldivers employ, for example?
How does Aspyer keep getting Star Wars contracts when the games turn out like this? 1st they botched the Kotor 2 Remaster on Switch, never launched that dlc. Then fumbled the KOTOR Remake on PS5 and now here we are again.
Honestly this sounds like good news to me. It seems as if the publisher thought there would be no demand for this game but people are proving them wrong. Hopefully they get this fixed up quick and realize that people want to play good Battlefront games.
I'll still be enjoying split screen and singleplayer play, and I am content because I expect the issues to be fixed in at most a month. In hindsight I probably should not have preordered it, but I wanted to save a few bucks...
@CVCubbington more than 3, their capacity was for just 192 players
Can we just let Nightdive Studios remaster these old games? This lot are a disgrace, from their missing content on Switch in a previous game and this absolute mess, which lacks even basic features such as inverting controls and is around 60gb for a pair of 20 year old games with a facelift
Disappointing but not a deal breaker. I want to play the offline stuff as well again and I have plenty of other offline stuff to play. (Still working on Rebirth)
I had a feeling they were going to drastically underestimate how many people want to play these games online again. Hopefully they figure it out sooner rather than later.
Bought it. Can’t play it. There is no option to invert vertical aim on either game. Tried to play for five minutes and gave up. Of course Sony won’t refund it because I had the audacity to download and install a digital purchase. Stuff like this is why I buy games less and less every year. Studio should be embarrassed they released this dumpster fire.
@LionVega it's refund policies like Sony's which push me towards buying digital games on Steam instead
@CVCubbington For Battlefront, each server has a 64 player capacity. There were about 10,000 people trying to play at launch on Steam.
Glad I didn't fall prey to my own nostalgia, and I feel for all of you out there who have. This really blows
@carlos82 this is definitely one of those times I’m jealous of pc gamers.
Wish I could refund. Horrible experience I had for an hour yesterday. I regret my purchase and that almost never happens
@LionVega
"There is no option to invert vertical aim on either game."
Well then I'm glad I didn't pre-order, that's deal breaker for me too.
Sorry to hear you got disappointed.
@3Above I’ve no idea why Disney doesn’t can their contract, it’s horrendous PR. Remake is apparently not dead but if Aspyr touches it I’ll pass. Studio used to be decent but lately they just ruin a lot and make minimal effort.
I think if Push Square want to review it do so the offline and if they think is holds up. But I appreciate the waiting for the better time to do so.
I understand it's a package of course. I understand yes they may get flak for it as to me yes the AI isn't great, some things aren't modern but seeing as how much I find many old games with left behind ideas hold up besides their controls most modern games may have better controls but the most boring ideas I've ever not wanted to buy them for and who cares graphics/worlds for their modernness but lacking depth many old games HAVE or are STILL FRESH. XD
If the offline is fine by all means. The game select menu seems fine (something other studios won't do sometimes or just port them and offer them digital then on a Switch cart or be lazy in terms of just 1 game select menu but not 2, because they are lazy) and they boot into the games (as far as heard I own BF1 on PS2/bought a Xbox copy not to long ago and have BF2 on PS2/PSP so I don't care to buy these digital or limited run physical and paid online pass I have experienced the offline content enough as it is and the more completeness of the maps are cool but not deal breakers for me).
The online seems a bit hilarious to me. People think Aspyr has that kind of money. They are like Mass Media or Sanzaru they are port studios they don't have money to many servers. Disney sure I agree with people on that side of things but a port studio does not. They may be like Saber, Rebellion or more to a degree maybe but even still.
3 servers yes is very little but I don't expect a lot from them. I agree they should know better of nostalgia/retrospectives of these games the past few years I've been watching. It's not hard to see people compare the old/modern BF games but also people on PC playing the OG ones modded. Who missed that part at either of the companies how much these games are big now as they were then due to retrospectives and PC modding. Some companies underestimate things.
Even if the negative reviews seem a bit much. I agree the games have their AI and other limits for sure but are still fun offline it's not online everything people will overhype and rate badly.
People have the nostaglia, yes they are good games it's why I bought the OG Xbox version due to wanting to try the BC on Xbox One and the Jabba's Palace DLC. I could get BF2 on Xbox but I'm not that desperate.
The new additions make sense for this collection to be definitive but if the offline works and split screen as well which you'd expect them to if it's a game select menu with two old titles ported to modern systems well enough at least then I'd say go for it. Even if the originals are good as they are the ports you'd want to hope are good as well additional content included as well and however much it can uplift the titles.
Waiting for a sale because this is (another) overpriced remaster, and I don’t care about the online stuff. It IS disappointing that splitscreen only supports two players, though.
So, I downloaded it when it went live. It worked alright, but some features were missing. They patched it a couple hours on. The patch immediately corrupted my save.
Not a huge loss as I hadn't done much, but I don't have much faith in Aspyr because of this.
At least this game is more worth the money than the recent Dark Forces remaster...
This is why I never pre-order game's in some rare cases I will pre-order, but it's very rare. Because you are paying more for a game that's in a worse state, if you wait a few months the game's are almost half price and actually playable in it's best version because of all the patches.
Is the single player/split-screen gameplay fine? Because that's all I'll be playing
I had a bad feeling that this release was gonna come with a heavy catch. Glad I held off. TBH it's worth diving back into DICE's BF II instead.
@Futureshark So you like up being down? That dont even make sense when playing. Pushing stick up should look up
@Yaycandy From what I remember, most games in the 90s (maybe earlier, wasn't alive) had the default set to inverted. Most games I remember were like that: Starfox, Goldeneye, etc. Or it could have been that that was how my brother played and I wanted to be like him. Don't exactly remember.
@Skeletor85 What is wrong with the Dark Forces Remaster? Genuinely interested, I have it in my wishlist for the (eventual) nostalgia trip.
@extragood for me personally the work they did on the remaster does not justify the price they are asking, in my opinion it was more like a 15,- game, I think even Jedi Academy was cheaper than Dark Forces and Jedi Academy at least has multiplayer.
I have Dark Forces on my wishlist too, but only waiting for the sale notification lol
@Yaycandy - It makes perfect sense. Y axis is basically your head. Try pushing your head forward to look up.
Another mess up by Aspyr. Not surprising.
Time to look to the future and stop looking backwards for remakes and remasters.
@Yaycandy
I know I'm in a minority but I can't help it.
It's like flying a plane, you push forward to go down, pull back to go up. I kind of imagine the stick is coming out of the back of my characters head, especially in first person games.
However, surely it's such an easy thing to implement in a game, it really should be standard.
Aspyr: "Insert cute baby seal pup BP We're Sorry South Park apology immediately, that'll fix it!"🙏🙄
Not sure if it was a blessing the PS5 KOTOR reboot was put on hold in light of their classic version efforts on Switch! As others have noted, Aspyr should be kept as far away as possible but unfortunately if Disney funded it then they were probably interested in how cheap they could do it rather than whom was the best to tackle it!🙄
Will be curious if the PS port is based off the PS2 version given the lack of new PS2 Classics on current gen since the I'll fated PS2 Classics on PS4 range which seemingly run into compatibility issues playing them on PS5.
@extragood problem is people expect devs to work for free on remakes and give away the game
After 30 years of inverted controls, I have been unable to train my brain to work with regular up and down. I can't do it, I can shoot a basketball left handed, sight read pretty complex sheet music. I can pick up basic parts of languages, read medical charts but play with regular up and down.....IMPOSSIBLE
@Deadlyblack I've still got the original but haven't played it for years.
I'll have another look at it in that case!
@LionVega I'm sure the original had inverted Y axis, or at least the option to set it.
I can't play any other way, so will give this version a miss if you can't invert aim.
@jt887 Yep, played for 25 minutes and realised how unplayable battlefront 2 is with aim acceleration you can't turn off, Microsoft gave me a refund in under 5 minutes, such a disappointment and a disservice to pandemic.
EA having motive remaster the games would have been more successful, we've seen how they handled dead space last year.
@LionVega I have the exact same issue. I think this was an option but it was removed along with a bunch of other things during the patching process.
