Sony's first-party Santa Monica Studio is currently working on a new PS5 game, that much is known, having wrapped development on God of War Ragnarok with the release of the essential Valhalla DLC. If we had to bet, it will be quite some time before we hear anything more concrete, but one thing's for sure: whatever they are up to, creative director Cory Barlog seems incredibly excited about it.
So excited, in fact, that Barlog took to Twitter over the weekend to tease that "some early things" were beginning to come together. He praised his fellow devs and threw in a Freya gif for good measure.
Santa Monica Studio is “spread out on a lot of different things”, but so far, journalistic efforts to deduce what they are have come up short. The best we've got is information gleaned via LinkedIn from Fernando Secco, a senior staff programmer at the studio. Secco's resume revealed that he's part of a team working on an unannounced IP, "leading with a small group of programmers in all things progression (RPG systems, resource loading, spawning, save game, trophies, visual scripting and whatnot).”
Fans latched onto a potential factoid last June when writer Alanah Pearce let slip (thanks, PSLS) that she was working on an unannounced sci-fi game, something in which Barlog himself is thought to have a hand. Could this mystery project be Sony's recently trademarked (and very sci-fi-sounding) Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet? Only time will tell.
What do you think Santa Monica Studios is up to? More God of War, or is this sci-fi thread starting to look likely? Let us know in the comments section below.

will be a PS6 launch title
Where's this title Cory has been creating for three last 4+ years? That must come to fruition soon...
@billyboyblue666 he started talking about his new game in late 2019, just before the Mandalorian season 1. He made a tweet about GOW new director and how he trusted in him, changed his twitter header to an image with stars and when Mandalorian was in transmission he started talking about games in space, that's why the stronger rumors to this day are still about a new space game. Then covid happened and like all the other games it sure has a delay for the lockdown.
It's coming guys and the doomers aren't ready.
Let's hope it's a live service looter shooter!
I'm sure whatever the project is, It'll be great, however, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is an awful name lol.
@nomither6 Or a PS5 Pro launch title.
@Afroducc Agreed. It would be better if it was just “Heretic Prophet”, or even simply “Intergalactic”, which is too reminiscent of the movie title “Interstellar” but is at least better than that gibberish. 😂 It won’t be the first game with a baffling name though.
@nomither6 cross-gen
As long as its more and more God of War games, then i will be happy.
Hopefully it is something with new IP, and something single player.
Please let it be anytime but GOW 🙏 Sony Santa Monica is such a talented studio and deserve more than being known as just that God Of War studio. Seriously all they've made since 2005 is GOW let's see something else Cory please!
I can never read this man's name and NOT immediately misread it as "Balrog" and think of LOTR.
Yippiee, an upcoming First-Party game that isn't GaaS, can't wait to see what their cooking up.
i'm pretty excited to see what they are doing
If another God of War sure. If it's something different like they did assist with games in the PS3 like Starhawk or some smaller titles PS4 era whether PSVR Here They Lie among others.
I mean besides Kinecta on PS2 and the God of War series they have made a lot of games possible over the years from PS2 to PS4.
We all know it's either God of War or something else. Not live service yay.
Always good to see two team splits sometimes. Song of the Deep was great alongside the ok-ish Ratchet 2016, or yes Sunset Overdrive. So Santa Monica having however much of a team size for this project, which if the space game sounds cool.
Is it a space survival game? Space RPG? Hmm. Could go either way story wise but gameplay wise and not a lot to go off of it seems fine so far for the vagueness there and whenever they are ready tell us more.
Granted the RPG systems seem eh to me as I don't like many RPG systems of current years they just don't interest me, but the rest seems pretty standard and fair.
I'm not interested in the current 2 God of War games so to me if it's something else more particular from the split teams I'm interested but it depends what it ends up being, if not because well it's a solid IP to keep around.
Sony wants TV shows/movies and so on then eh nah pass on pushing IPs too much when for me at least the direction hasn't been for me but more power to those that have enjoyed them.
If it's early stages of a new game it won't release for 5 years or so based on the GoW development times, so that would be 2029!
