For many, the promise of a game lasting upwards of 100 hours is no longer the selling point that it used to be. People who grew up with games may now find themselves with families or other responsibilities — and so, at least from what we see in comments sections and the like, there's a clear demand for shorter titles that offer more focused experiences.
You may be pleased to hear, then, that Dragon's Dogma 2 isn't going to offer some utterly colossal campaign. Despite being roughly four times the size of its predecessor in terms of the open world map, the main story itself is the same length as the one in Dragon's Dogma — or thereabouts.
This is according to director Hideaki Itsuno, via an interview with Game Informer. "For players that only focus on the things [to] go through the [game's campaign], the playtime itself shouldn't change that dramatically from the first game," he explains.
At this point, it's worth noting that the original Dragon's Dogma is about 30-40 hours long — and that time can be drastically reduced upon repeat playthroughs, when you're more familiar with the game's structure.
However, for those who do want to stray from the main path, Itsuno says that a lot of effort has been put into optional objectives and exploration. "For the people that want to do everything, that see many things [...] we put a lot of effort into adding as many elements as possible for this. There's many things that could catch players' attention and for those people, they will probably find their playtime significantly longer."
Are you glad to hear that Dragon's Dogma 2 won't demand too much of your time? Gather your pawns and set off for the horizon in the comments section below.

My only complaint regarding this game is that it makes it hard for me to complain about it
Sounds good to me! Looks like they’re putting out a lot of video and info recently in the buildup to release. I’m trying to avoid most of it - I’m just ready to play the game!
I have a lot of respect for that, especially nowadays.
@Czar_Khastik not being able to complain about things is my kryptonite so I feel you
Sounds good to me. I'm sure ill get lost un the world though.
But I wanted it to be a live service experience that demands I log in every day to improve on my engagement metrics in order to slave toward daily quests and grinds! The authentic gaming experience the shareholders promised me I’d microtransaction… no… macrotransaction my life away for 9000+ hours
Yup, I’m fine with that. I’m ready for this game.
I just hope I do better with the Ur Dragon this time around.
If you respect your time so much you won't even bother starting the game or any other game for that matter. Problem isn't families and responsibilities, problem is your fomo self wants to buy, play and complete every single game being released under the sun, that's fine but don't expect them all to be short because YOU are buying them all. There are people who like to buy and focus on just a few games and want long campaigns at those prices.
N.i.c.e. dragon dogma 2 is going to be amazing.dragon dogma dark arisen is one of the best video games ever made.word up son
I recall being completely absorbed in the first DD game and doing every side quest possible, and I don't see that changing with me for DD2. I'll be happily looking forward to 100+ hours again, totally exploring the world
@Frmknst I dont ever recall any open world game respecting anyone's time lol.
@Frmknst won't be playing new ff7 then huh😱
It turns out the time I booked off work this month coincides with release....
If one wanted to respect their time they wouldn’t be doing this vanity or hobby called gaming. Instead doing something productive for their life. Maybe I’m in the minority but I prefer long open world games that provide a lot of value. Especially considering how modern gaming doesn’t have as many titles out as earlier generations due to development costs.
@Uromastryx Rebirth is so horribly bloated it's insane. They even have 'climb generic tower to reveal other generic objectives'. Each region also has way too many of them.
@Nepp67 Dark Souls 1-3, Bloodborne, Elden Ring are all open world games that respected the player's time.
I couldn't give a monkeys. I want this game to take up as much of my spare time as possible. Some people only took around 45 hours to finish elden ring but it took me over 200 hours to platinum because I just had to rinse everything out of it and I can see myself doing the same with this.
@JohntheRaptor oh yeah it's horrible, move on with main story go to a new area, it's like starting all over again, and side note Gongaga is literally one of the worst designed maps I've ever played in any game,.absolutely story only only hard mode
@JohntheRaptor Elden Ring is the only that is open world, but I'll give you that though. Souls and BB are fairly linear in design which is why they dont even have a map.
Didn't they remove the fast travel? Is that respecting my time? But seriously there won't be fast travel or did I misread that?
@TheArt
Exactly. If "said" game, which I've only bought 5 in the last 3 years, doesn't make my 70 bucks become 1cent/hour played, it's TRASH....I need/want 100's of hours per game....Not this bs, multiplayer, repetitive drivel that's being released now adays...
Are we talking Skyrim levels of RPG or something a bit smaller and tighter
@TheArt Who is this for Capcom or someone else?
@JohntheRaptor Yet I had less issues with Demon Souls then with DS1 god I loved that game so much. 😅
I think FF7 was fantastic as it was with some small adjustments and a graphic overhaul I would have been happy. The new controls are great for me though.
@Flaming_Kaiser For everyone else.
@TheArt Ah ok but you know already people tend to have nothing better to do then complain about nothing.
