Empire of the Ants, for those who don’t know, is an old-school real-time strategy game which first launched in 2000 for PC. In this PS5 reboot, publisher Microids is partnering with developer Tower Five to create what might be one of the most photorealistic PS5 titles to date. Seriously, this is pushing Unreal Engine 5 to its absolute limits.
The press release hints that “players will crawl across a microscopic world of epic proportions to help a colony prosper through their tactical genius”. There’ll be ample tutorials for newcomers to get to grips with the challenges of controlling a colony, but also “scalable difficulty and advanced mechanics for veteran players”.
“The game features a narrative that follows the rhythm of the seasons and affects wildlife attributes such as speed, resistance, buffs, and more,” the summary continues. “The maps in the game will also change depending on the time of day.” There’s no firm release date just yet, but the developer’s targeting a 2024 launch.

I just hope the dev takes their time so the game doesn’t launch with a lot of bugs.
This looks incredible. I might get this, even if it's just to fool everyone in thinking they are watching a documentary.
Yeah, really interesting concept. Hope there is plenty of depth, not just a tech demo with shallow strategy bolted on
@koverby Ha!
In a sea of uncreative, shallow, terribly written, terribly playing "AAAA" games from Ubisoft, games like these actually take risk and deserve to be supported
Hopefully there won't be any aggressive micro transactions 😏
Did someone call the Helldivers for help? For freedom and Managed Democracy!
The front page article had ants as the screen shot but I should have known the 8 legged freaks would feature too, can't watch the trailer and can't buy the game due my arachnophobia but my god does it look real!! Imagine that in VR........ No thank you 😂
Fascinating concept for a game! Very very intriguing. 🤔
As the old saying goes "beware of trailers that promote graphical prowess over actual gameplay".
Speaking of... I wander what's the point of working so much to include such astonishing graphics if 90% of the game's buyers can't / won't even enable them?
Current console gen can't fully support this, and PC owners that afford a 4080 or 4090 that can (maybe) pull this off at an acceptable framerate... enough to take a look at the latest Steam charts to form an idea of how few they are.
IMO it would be best for the devs to concentrate on things that matter to most players, like enriching the world, the story/lore, refining to perfection the gameplay mechanics, the combat etc - the bits that actually make a game epic!
What is this? Pikmin for ants!?
@koverby every bug will be intentional 😂
@Kiefer-Sutherland pikmin are based on ants…
EDF! EDF! EDF! EDF!
Upping the ante!
Let's not kid ourselves, there is no way on earth this thing is looking anything like that on a PS5. Would struggle to even run. It does look photorealistic though and is impressive to the point you would believe it to be a documentary at a glance.
They had to add spiders didn't they
@Shinnok789 Ps5 pro will eat it alive and it's coming out this year so it'll probably be designed for that.
