Square Enix has dropped a substantial new update for Star Ocean: The Second Story R, which released for PS5 and PS4 last year. Already an incredibly well-made remake of a classic RPG, this patch adds some welcome features, such as a new difficulty level, new endgame bosses, new options for starting New Game+, and more.
Here are the patch notes, as per the above trailer:
- New, super hard difficulty: CHAOS
- New Raid Enemies — the Ten Wise Men now appear as optional bosses after competing the story, dropping unique rewards
- New weapons, armour, and accessories have been added
- New NPC illustrations for some key story characters
- 'Character Graphics Collection' lets you view all character illustrations
- New option to replay endings that you've unlocked
- Customisation options for New Game+, letting you reset things like character levels or acquired items

It's always nice when a great game gets a big update, isn't it? The Second Story R has a lot of inherent replay value to begin with, thanks to a range of recruitable characters and loads of potential story endings — but this patch sounds like the perfect excuse to dive back in.

I've got Second Story R sitting on my shelf, still sealed, waiting to be played. I made the mistake of playing First Departure R first, which was a heartbreakingly underwhelming experience, and never did finish, and has now made me question whether or not I even want to play Second Story now.
@Andee you should play it , 2nd story was one of my favorite rpg's of all time.
I enjoyed the demo for this one, and it has me thinking about buying this game often. But I cannot justify buying it when the backlog is 6 large games deep...
Shame they cant patch in a %50 discount - then I'd be all over it
So many games, only one life...
@twitchtvpat Yeah I should definitely give at least the demo a go — it's just that that was like the third JRPG I've dropped in the past year, and I'm trying to be a bit more discerning with them. Apparently Second Story is brimming with QoL improvements that First Departure lacks
@darreb510 6 large games... oh how I wish that was my backlog depth. That's basically monthly addition to the list
Will definitely be revisiting Star Ocean 2 now. Gave up on platinuming Octopath 2 😪
CHAOS!!!!
That is all.
@Andee First Departure wasn't a remake though it was a remaster so it didn't come with any QoL changes needed to make it better.
My GOTY last year was Alan Wake 2, with Star Ocean Second Story R and Sea of Stars (all the stars!) tied at second place. They didn't really need to do this, but they went out and did it and it's freaking awesome. Those new NPC illustrations really makes me want to go through the game again because they look so good!
@3Above this is why I was glad I bought it on Switch lol. No pressure for the plat.
@slips666 The secret boss is just too tough. And to beat him I would have needed to focus on building 2 characters from early game who I frankly just didnt like playing as so they are my sone of my weakest. 🤷🏾♂️
But the Epilogue was so good I might revisit the fight later on, it's just that one trophy that I need.
@3Above was this the big bad fight at the very end of the epilogue? He was tough but I learned in OT1 to do a 4 & 4 setup. Do the chapters with 4 players and then the next 4 together so you have eight built up characters. It was tough but doable. Now, the same boss in OT1 sent me down a rabbit hole of despair and I gave up.
@slips666 yeah the OT1 boss on the island with the large Gates. I've littery done everything else in the game including the ending Epilogue. I feel like one day I will beat him but the frustration of trying after 126hrs was too great. Had to step away.
@3Above I don't blame ya! I thought the way they handled that fight was truly epic but it can be complex!
Played about an hour and a half of the demo yesterday and had no choice but to buy it. I think the style is seriously beautiful and really freaking cool (said "holy f***" out loud in approval when I first saw it yesterday), I dig the combat, and every system that was introduced made me want it more and more. Can't wait to get going on it tonight!
