Three relatively big games all released on the same day last week: Dragon's Dogma 2, Rise of the Ronin, and Princess Peach: Showtime!. But as we all know, Japan absolutely adores its Nintendo Switch exclusives — and so perhaps it's no huge surprise to see the latter title top the latest charts.
To be fair, there wasn't a big gap between the three games. Dragon's Dogma 2 came in second at 69,000 sales — roughly 10,000 behind Peach — and Rise of the Ronin managed third with 65,000 sales. Given how close together the numbers are, there's maybe an argument to be made that they cannibalised one another.
In any case, these are merely decent figures. As always, it's important to note that these charts only count physical sales — but no one would blame you for thinking heavily marketed releases like Dragon's Dogma 2 and Rise of the Ronin should be doing a bit better for themselves.
Elsewhere, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth remains in the top ten, but with sales still slipping — it sold just 7,100 units last week — it's only a matter of time until it's gone. Unicorn Overlord couldn't maintain its position, either.

At this point... ok.
Japan still plays video games?
Makes it sound like Princess Peach would beat the crap out of the protagonist of both games. Which is true.
Forget all that...the 2DS is killing it this week! 😅
@GamingFan4Lyf …does this mean the 2DS has outsold the Xbox One this week?
It seems that ps5 will surpass ps4 total hardware sales sooner or later. No small feat.
I hope Nintendo will keep this up with the next console. But for some reason if a gaming company is successful one gen the next they will fail or stumble. The only exceptions were nes-snes and psone-ps2. Bust be some curse or something.
Exclusives still work.
Mario kart 8 is never going away that game still pulls these numbers at full price wtf 😳
@Drago201 it's such a staple that probably 1/2 of those new switch buyers will buy it at some point to have on the console.
Why do these articles always try and make these sales numbers from Japan sound so disappointing? Its so weird and unnecessary. Feels like engagement/rage bait.
Japan doesn't count anymore. Pretty soon Nintendo going to have actual political power over there.
@Cloud39472 that's exactly what it is - and sadly, judging by several of the comments above, it works - and just like the charts here without digital sales being included they are really not very meaningful numbers
@Drago201 this is why we won’t see a Switch successor until 2025 or beyond….
@Cloud39472 did we read the same article?!
@Martijn87 That's depressingly true in all cases. Really, PS1 to PS2 is the only time that didn't happen, even the SNES was a pale imitation of the NES in sales.
The one thing Switch has going for it is that rule doesn't hold true for handhelds. DS to 3DS cratered because the casual audience got phones, but other than that it's just been strength to strength unless your name is Vita.
@GamingFan4Lyf To the 9 people that bought a 2DS this week, I have a Palm Pilot they might be interested in.
@Enuo They had the late former PM cosplaying as their IP to represent their country on the national stage. I think we're long past that.
@Doctor_BK "In any case, these are merely decent figures. As always, it's important to note that these charts only count physical sales — but no one would blame you for thinking heavily marketed releases like Dragon's Dogma 2 and Rise of the Ronin should be doing a bit better for themselves."
And then
" Elsewhere, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth remains in the top ten, but with sales still slipping — it sold just 7,100 units last week — it's only a matter of time until it's gone."
" merely decent" "should be doing a bit better" "sold just 7100 units" all things said to make these games sound like they're doing poorly. Am I wrong? Push square has a track record of making these articles about game sales recently. Especially if it's a Square Enix game. They love those.
Maybe the developers of DD2 and RotR can patch their games to make them look and play more like Princess Peach.
Crazy that the best FF in years with 92 Metacritic sold so bad in Japan…
because princess peach is a pinup. whats the demographics this game sold to
A Nintendo game in Japan, for the most part, will always be a top seller. It's just a primarily handheld country now. The fact that MK8 is still in the top 10 is just crazy.
@Cloud39472 FF7R is the 2nd best selling PS5 game behind 16 on launch in Japan.
Ronin and DD2 being the same day has cannibalised their sales, probably crossed 100k mark if they had the space. Still wild to me Ronin got more flack than completely broken DD2 in performance. Neither did boost the PS5 tho.
Land of the man child 😂
@CrackmanNL I know, FF16 and Rebirth have both done very well but PushSquare keeps pushing the narrative that they're big flops or something.
Dragons Dogma 2's performance has been fine for me except in densely populated cities but in combat with multiple goblins, a minotaur, a griffin and spells popping off everywhere it still runs really smooth. Not 60fps smooth maybe but I honestly never cared about all the framerate discourse.
@Mikey856 I mean Sony IS based in Japan.
@HotGoomba playstation isn’t anymore though
@HotGoomba yeah obvs lol and?
I remember when Nintendo games used to be easy to play and difficult to master. Now, in my opinion, their exclusives are all babby's first video game in terms of difficulty.
Princess peach is amazing and deserves the success
Ronin did a lot better than I expected (40-55k) and I expected 80k+ for DD2 so a disappointment over there. Peach is unsurprising since the only games in Japan that actually sell well anymore are first party Nintendo games (hence, why so many Japanese devs have increased their focus/presence in the West). Also very rare to see Mature games sell well in Japan.
@Cloud39472 Seems like you just don’t like this style of article. To me, they are just telling it like it is. Simple reporting of numbers with nuances explained.
@Doctor_BK They don't explain the nuance though. Not here and not in their FF articles either. If they did, they would mention that this is Japan and their numbers for games that aren't Nintendo or handheld have been on the decline for years and so their numbers are not indicative of the bigger picture and so to take it with a pinch of salt.
Instead they try to imply that these numbers show signs of disappointing sales which without Digital and without numbers from other countries is jumping to conclusions by a huge amount.
I'm kind of stunned how the consumer is still supporting such an outdated archaic piece of tech...!
@NotSoCryptic sort of,
Japan plays Nintendo.
@Drago201 Same as GTA5 in some markets.
