How about this for a reveal trailer, then? Plaion has announced Nobody Wants to Die by Critical Hit Games, an upcoming futuristic detective escapade set in a dystopian New York. The action takes place in 2329, where you’ll assume the role of agent James Karra, who’s hunting a serial killer targeting the city’s elite.
On the developer’s official website, it describes the game as a first-person, single player, story-driven experience with a “neo-noir atmosphere”. The title’s being powered by Unreal Engine 5, as showcased in this cinematic trailer which all takes place in-engine. It reminds us a little bit of Cyberpunk 2077 we suppose, but we like the idea of using futuristic gadgets to solve a murder mystery.
To be brutally honest, it seems a little too good to be true from where we’re sitting, but it’s hard to judge until we get gameplay footage. Right now, the title’s targeting a 2024 release date, so we shouldn’t have to wait too long for a follow-up trailer. Will you be adding this one to your wishlist like the trailer encourages? It's a cinematic trailer, of course it's too good to be true. In-engine is an almost meaningless term these days.
I love Ori. I love Soulsbornes….i think I’m going to love this game
Edit: I’m getting my games mixed up…I’m an idiot. Ignore me here and probably best to ignore me in the future as well!
IN A WORLD...
WHERE DIALOG.
IS HACKY...
ONE MAN.
SOLVES CRIMES.
WITH TIME.
It's giving me flashbacks of the first Cyberpunk 2077 trailer and we all know how that turned out. So yeah I want to see some actual gameplay and reviews before I let myself get hyped for this.
nice cinematics, but the game could be crap for all we know...
@UltimateOtaku91 yes, it turned out great with some extra patience 😊
This looks great and is a good trailer.
I'm not seeing anything that looks 'too good to be true' and I think its suspect journalism to say as much. It's an in-engine trailer which clearly shows they are using high res assets and have a decent particle system working etc.
Of course when all the game systems are working in the background they will need to turn down some of the effects, rendering modes etc to achieve good FPS, but that's completely normal with any in-engine trailer.
So it has a decent engine, its clearly been developed for some time, but there's little here to suggest if we will like the actual gameplay loop and I'd suspect more trailers will help establish if the game will be worth. Its certainly got the basics in place to be a great looking title.
*Edit. There is considerably more information on this game on the games page on the PS store. Its also confirmed its using UE5, which is quite obvious from the trailer and stated in this piece, but nice to confirm. A futuristic 'Detective noir game' is right up my street, so its on my wishlist and I hope we see some gameplay soon.
Too good to be true? In a cinematic trailer?
That's because it is. It's not real gameplay.
Gets me more excited than a trailer that shows off actual yet generic gameplay. I feel like every day brings at least one new generic PvP, PvE shooter with some boring futuristic look.
@Frmknst Absolutely nothing….i didn’t watch the trailer or read the article but came straight from reading some stuff about No rest for the wicked somewhere else so I am getting my games mixed up.
Embarrassing senior moment!!
Interesting, definitely one to keep an eye on!
ffs, there's not a single second of gameplay shown in the trailer. I hate it here.
no gameplay and no release date.
that game will be forgotten by the end of the week.
Blade runner/cyberpunk 2077 meets life is strange….. as long as it’s 3rd person and not FPS, then I’m interested
How is it that every dystopian sci-fi game still uses the bloody Blade Runner/Logan Run Aesthetic. I feel like the last truly unique looking dystopian worlds we got were Mirror's Edge and Horizon
my melancholy heart belongs to Blade Runner 1982.
Out in 2024 and they couldn’t atleast show a glimpse of gameplay? Hmmmm
Bruh, who trust and get hyped from cinematic scene nowadays? Gameplay first then we talk lol
I hate cinematic trailers.
Show us gameplay!
@Ravix Sounded SO cheesey. Really awful writing on this, full of clichés.
And a serial killer targeting the world's elite? So what... Good for them! Let em have at it, I'd say, haha.
@Ravix Isn’t cheesy exactly what they are going for? It seems like they are trying to do a Max Payne plus cyber punk walking simulator type thing-where the over the top dialogue is part of the point. If so, I am here for it.
Release 2024 and only cinematics. That's really suspect in my book
@Westernwolf4 I'm going to break down why I made the joke now, which is never a good thing 😅 But I think there's a difference between gritty noir with a focus on a broken character that has an understanding of the poetry in all of their dispair, and then this, which was just a lot of saying nothing at all in a copycat style because it might trick people into thinking it is like other noir media.
I hope it turns out good, as it is definitely my kind of thing, but it just seemed like a bit of an empty attempt at mimicking something much better (Like Max Payne the movie was an empty attempt to mimmick the game)
Just look at this line:
"I'm in the business of secrets. But it's more of an addiction. I like 'em straight, with no chaser. Even though the stuff can kill you. They say time heals all wounds. BULLS***. I'll tell you what time does. Time reveals secrets. Secrets that will blah. Secrets the will blergh. Secrets that will etc etc" ... erm, okay then? Good chat main character guy.
Vs Max Payne narration:
"The sun went down with practiced bravado. Twilight crawled across the sky, laden with foreboding."
Or "Einstein Was Right. Time Is Relative To The Observer. When you're looking down the barrel of a gun, time slows down. Your whole life flashes by, heartbreak and scars. Stay with it, and you can live a lifetime in that split second."
The Max Payne lines clearly have poetry in them, they actually set the scene, and tell the story of the moment. But the NWTD lines are just trailer nonsense that don't really mean anything.
It did remind me of classic Redd Pepper trailer reads, though. But he would make any old nonsense sound cool. Hence the style of my comment 😵😅
Good timing for this title.
The success of 2077's 2.0 and Phantom Liberty -release will leave many, like me, starved for content in the same vein. Of course, it won't be like an CDPR RPG but a clever and engaging detective story will placate the more mature gamer's palate.
My eyes are on this title now.
Give it to me in VR.
What exactly looks to good to be true? it's a CGI trailer, we don't even know what the game is about.
I mean "first-person, single player, story-driven experience with a “neo-noir atmosphere”." could be anything from a shooter, to even a walking simulator.
And well, regarding the trailer, i guess the gameplay is also a secret too.
“In a world of secrets, my secret is secret. And I don’t like secrets. That’s my secret. And your secret won’t be secret anymore, you want to know why? It’s a secret. And secrets don’t stay secret for long. The true secret secret, is there are no true secrets, truly.”
Looking forward to sone gameplay, and if the terrible dialogue plays into the whole with a bit of tongue-in-cheek pulpy fun
@Hyena_socks lmao
I dont see anything thats "too good to be true" Its a cinematic after all.
As she reaches for the Airship - all I could think was Bioshock
infinite - Just me ......?
Didn't this one have a gameplay trailer teaser months back? I might be mistaken, but I swear this one definitely showed some of the gameplay, which looked great.
@ErrantRob You might be confusing this with the game 'Repo Man' which is similar but with more of a future art nouveau aesthetic.
@GeeEssEff I get it, I've got No Rest For The Wicked on the brain too. Possibly my most anticipated game this year.
Single player, story driven experience, had me. Refreshing to read something that's not damn soulslike or Metroidvania. But these pre rendered trailers should be a thing of the past. When In game engines are so impressive. Let's see proper gameplay footage!!! This tells me the devs aren't confident in there own work.
When I just saw the title image, I was not interested. After watching the trailer and knowing what it is about, now I am curious and looking forward to some gameplay reveal captured on ps5.
And yes a bladerunner-esque world in VR would obviously be awesome. I wonder how long we have to wait until enough VR enthusiasts invaded all studios and studios add VR modes against all odds ....
@Axelay71 Its a fully in engine trailer. Its not pre rendered, its in UE5. Yes modern engines can be very impressive😊 Especially if they dont need to run game systems....
Clichéd dialogue, clichéd voiceover, clichéd setting. We have different definitions of ‘too good to be true’
Honestly cinematic trailers should be automatically disregarded by the media
@Titntin I appreciate what your saying UE5 is very impressive. But I'm still waiting to see something mind blowing using it. The Matrix demo is probably the best I have seen personally. Regards to the demo, in game engine or not its a poor trailer that gives us no idea of the game.
@Axelay71
Appreciate your take. Ive see some excellent real time graphics in UE5 and created a few decent things myself to evaluate the tech (Im an old dev still interested in modern toolsets), so I like what I see.
As for the trailer doing its job, it was designed to be watched in conjunction with the press releases and information it was released with, rather than in isolation on a site like this. Its still not very good at selling the game, but it makes a little more sense with the rest of the info...
No idea if this will be good or not, but Im interested enough to be looking for gameplay in the future! 😊 Have a great one!
@Titntin totally agree, the more single player experiences the better for me. I'm old school, online, open world gaming isn't for me. Unfortunately there is to much of it. I would love to see the return of rail shooters. With the likes of UE5 powering them imagine how good they could be. Personally the industry doesn't cater for the wider demographic & there are a lot of old gamers out there with disposable income, I'm one of them.
It's a cinematic trailer. 😂😂😂
From the screenshots on their Steam page, it reminds me of the Tex Murphy games. Maybe it’s that kind of game combined with Dontnod’s Remember Me mechanics.
