It’s been a huge 12 months for Final Fantasy, and Square Enix is seemingly just getting warmed up. Following on from the reveal of Final Fantasy 16 add-on The Rising Tide earlier this weekend, the publisher has now confirmed MMO expansion Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail will deploy on 2nd July. This all follows the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth last month, of course.
Pre-orders for Dawntrail will open on 26th March, and interestingly there are a number of bonuses which reference Final Fantasy 9. According to director Naoki Yoshida, speaking at a PAX East 2024 panel, the reason for these is a “secret”. Obviously, it’s been rumoured for a little while that a remake of the classic PS1 RPG is in development.
Either way, the aforementioned pre-order extras include a wind-up Zidane minion, and Azeyma’s earrings, which grant a 30 per cent increase in XP earned when worn. You’ll also get three-day early access to the expansion, meaning it’ll be available to enjoy from 28th June. Of course, you must have made appropriate progress in Endwalker first.
On PS5 and PS4, you’ll be able to purchase the expansion for $39.99, or grab a Digital Collector’s Edition for $59.99. This latter option includes a bunch of additional in-game items, including a mount based on the Ark eidolon and a wind-up Garnet minion – both inspired by Final Fantasy 9. You’ll also get a Chocobo brush.

Man I have a long ways to go, but I'm almost done with Heavensward at least(Also easily the best ost I have ever heard) and finally we have a date for the FF16 crossover which is just in a couple of weeks. Once I get that outfit I'm never taking it off dx
I greatly respect FFXIV as a game but I know I can never play it. It's too big of a game for me to give it the time.
Yoshi-P delaying Dawntrail’s release date so gamers can play the Elden Ring DLC first. 😆
@AdamNovice I started in October and caught up with the MSQ at the end of January. If that’s your only goal, it’s very doable to complete by Dawntrail with time to level alt jobs or take on other activities.
@AdamNovice If you just focus on the story, it’s not really all that much bigger than a typical JRPG. And there’s no pressure to keep up on it when you can’t devote the time.
@AdamNovice personally speaking when the latest big Expansion was Endwalker I was able to start from literally quest 1 and disregarding like a month break I took from being annoyed by ARR and some seriously long nights of knocking out ends of expansions or patches (were talking I started at 10pm EST and was hopping off the PS5 sometimes as late as 5am.) I caught all the way up to Endwalker in said 8 months and like literally 3 days later Endwalker was out. So I think you can do it. You got this.
I’m so excited for this. The second the preorders go live I’m preordering the Digital Collectors Edition. Didn’t do that one for Endwalker but now that I’m so deeply in love with XIV I not only wanna do this but I think it deserves it.
Oh boy. See you later, summer. Hello Final Fantasy.
