Square Enix is putting the PC version of Final Fantasy 16 through its paces, as it completes the final stages of optimisation for the platform. Obviously, the game launched last year as a timed PS5 exclusive to much critical acclaim, but a port to PC was always on the cards, and it sounds like the team has been busy beavering away on it behind-the-scenes.
Speaking with Game Informer, through a translator, director Naoki Yoshida revealed: “In terms of where we are in development currently, we're trying to figure out the final stages of optimisation right now. When we can release the PC version might be dependent on that – the system requirements and specifications for PC that players will need, so we're trying to figure that out. Naturally, [the PC specifications] are looking to be somewhat high.”
Because the requirements are looking intensive, Yoshida says his team are eager to deploy a demo so fans can test it out on their own rigs ahead of release. “We're looking to release a demo for the PC version,” Yoshida explained. “We can't really talk about too much in terms of details of when it's going to come out – I think in a little bit more time we'll be in a better place to announce things. But one thing's for sure: it won't be too distant in the future; it won't be a year, it won't be two years, it will probably be shorter than that, so stay tuned.”
Obviously, with Sony itself even porting titles from its back catalogue to PC, seeing console exclusives eventually launch on the platform isn’t much of a surprise anymore. Final Fantasy 16 is a gorgeous game, though, and we’re sure it’s going to benefit from the raw horsepower of some expensive setups. We’re eager to see how the title compares to its already beautiful PS5 counterpart.

Great game glad to see more people get to play it. Epic soundtrack.
As someone not steeped in FF culture (I’ve only played VII Remake, XV and XVI) it was a truly epic action RPG. I understand that it didn’t necessarily scratch that JRPG-itch for the series-veterans but I loved it!
It'll be interesting to see how this runs on my PC. Hopefully the requirements for the eventual 7 Rebirth port are low enough that I'll be able to comfortably play it on my Steam Deck.
I'm looking for an excuse to replay FF16 (especially with the second expansion coming soon). That's not to say I'd play it on PC, but I would love to see Square Enix make adjustments to the PS5 version in tandem with the PC release.
My favourite game from last year. I’d love a chance to play this on the most powerful hardware. On PS5, there were moments where I just couldn’t believe what was coming out of my screen in real time. Hopefully performance mode can eventually be brought up to the level of stability that Fidelity offers. I really believe this game will age well and be looked back on fondly as a standout series entry.
Playing Rebirth and enjoying it as much as I am so far is making me think about holding off on Dragon’s Dogma 2 when I wrap up to support 16 and get the DLC. So many PC-based players are about to experience one helluva journey.
Loved Clive and Joshua's tale and the first and third act but every attempt to tackle the subject of slavery was absolutely terrible and Kupka was a terrible act 2 villain. The more serious the FF the worst the overall politics for some reason.
Solid 8/10 overall. Nowhere near the top 3 FFs a very good FF game nonetheless.
Devil May Clive is a solid 8/10 - would play it again at 60fps. Some of the most epic fights I had in a videogame ever.
Outside of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth, Final Fantasy XVI is my favorite in the series. I really enjoyed it

Mine would shatter from the demo alone do I aint even gonna try it dx.
@TheCollector316 Yeah same here, easily my most favorite FF game. The game was very well done with its mature tone and political themes so I really hope we get another game similar to 16 especially in its simple DMC combat.
I don’t care what haters are said about this game, but im freaking love it. Amazing story, amazing gameplay. I want more story about cid and benedikta relationship(kinda sad for benedikta though)
@Nepp67 I really enjoyed the gameplay and the story. I wish they stay on this path, just add more rpg elements and it’s gonna be twice amazing
@TheCollector316 @ShogunRok i have to eat some crow on this one. I always look at FF as a series i respect but don’t play. Haven’t bought a FF game since the PS2 days. But the stories, music and just creative vision the series has has always earned my respect, but i wasn’t doing a long turn based game. When FF16 got announced as an action game, i took the bait of all the players that were negative about it. But during a Black Friday sale i bit and bought FF16 for $40 and boy am i happy i did. I think it is so good. Only 30 % through it but just started playing it about 4 weeks ago and been busy. I would LOVE to see this game get a massive PS5 Pro update. I think the Pro would run this game to awesome levels above the base console. Sorry for the long reply but not many players on here say they were wrong and i was wrong to nearly dismiss this game.
@HonestHick Hey, it happens! It's very easy to have your perspective swayed by reviews and comments online — especially if you haven't tried something yourself.
Reviews and comments can definitely be useful — but only to a point. They're never going to be a perfect substitute for actually playing a game and forming your own opinion — which is exactly what you're saying.
Glad you're enjoying it!
Can't wait for more people to play this masterpiece.
@HonestHick
Honestly is the best policy. At the end of the day, you have to see for yourself sometimes.
Glad that pc players are getting go to play this wonderful made game. The hate for this game is eye rolling. It was a very well put together story and I beat it again when the dlc was released.. I hope it sells well that way they might consider more dlc or I wish they would make a sequel but I know what they said in the past about it. All in all I enjoyed this action rpg style game. Maybe one more open world would be nice.

This means that the PC port will be a glitchy mess with performance issues, just like every Playstation-to-PC game when they launched.
I haven’t played it yet as I was hoping for a performance patch but I guess they gave up on any more patches.
Very good, I have it for PS5, but still wraped in shrink. Loved the demo, I play every main Final Fantasy game in order, just finished FF2 Pixel Remaster today, so this is something I am looking forward too in a million years from now or so. ^^
@TheCollector316 For sure! I really enjoy FF16. At the $40 i got it for you could argue it’s one of the best purchases i made in 2023. I read reviews of course and i tend to block out most of the negative chatter online cause i know someone will always have something bad to say about any game or platform. Not sure Square will go back to action based anytime soon after hearing the negative reaction, but it scored well meta wise and I would for sure buy another one if made the same. Turn based games just aren’t my thing, wish i did like them cause there are a ton of them that are really really great games.
Probably an unpopular opinion.
FF16 is my favorite Final Fantasy and I have played them all with the exception of the original and FF2. Loved the action combat, found the story to be some of the very best in any FF. The only points i can deduct is the side quests. Most of them were a huge letdown. All in all though 16 an amazing game even a masterpiece! Also looking forward to the Rising Tide DLC! Bring on Leviathan!!!
Long as I can play it on Steamdeck, I'm happy.
@OMG_Waffles I'm not a true FF fan as I've only played through 16, 15, 7R and currently playing through 7 Rebirth and 14(Almost done with Heavensward) and yeah 16 is easily the best FF game I have played. It's finished, it doesn't feel bloated, and it truly feels like a game that the devs wanted to make and didn't much issues along the way. I really hope 17 is similar to 16 in its mature tone as it really felt like a breath of fresh air compared to 15 and 7R.
If there's a demo, I'll try it. But won't buy it.
