For a long, long time now, the hardcore Destiny 2 fanbase appeared to accept Bungie would always stick to its seasonal and expansion-based model, and never develop a standalone third entry in the series. Referencing the issues the studio has with its engine and how after layoffs hit, the most committed players struggled to see how Bungie could continue to support Destiny 2 while developing a full sequel in secret.
That line of thinking was generally accepted amongst the fanbase, but yesterday's livestream detailing The Final Shape has blown open the doors to rampant speculation all over again.
At the start of the showcase, executive creative director Luke Smith opened proceedings by teasing the Destiny series will continue after the events of the DLC launching in June. We know Destiny 2 itself will live on in the form of Episodes after The Final Shape, but what Smith says appears to hint at something bigger. He teased: "Facing The Witness is not the end of Destiny 2, and it's definitely not the end of Destiny. After you face The Witness, we're going to tell you what's coming next to Destiny 2 and beyond. We'll see you soon."
Bungie generally hosts a Destiny 2 Showcase during August, so it's expected the developer will reveal what it has ready for the future then later this year. Interestingly, what was later revealed in yesterday's livestream for The Final Shape accurately lined up with a Reddit post made earlier this year claiming knowledge of a third Destiny title. It was said the DLC will contain a "prism" system that will "allow players to mix and match abilities from different subclasses". This was confirmed as the new Prismatic subclasses shown off yesterday.
The post in question then went on to state Destiny 3 is in the works, and it'll allow you to equip any ability since classes will no longer exist. With the new Prismatic subclasses allowing you to mix and match different subclasses, The Final Shape is speculated to be the first step to making that a reality, with the third game codenamed "Payback".
With presumably a clean slate and a fresh start for your character, would you be interested in a Destiny 3? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Haven’t played Destiny in forever, I’m still very fond of it though, and had some great times playing it. It had its fair share of missteps and problems.
I’d be rooting for a successful Destiny 3, for sure!
The really need to move on from Destiny 2 now. The game has become a jumbled mess with an incoherent nonsensical story, convoluted progression systems, and more content in the "Vault" than in the actual game itself. Destiny needs a fresh start and if it is going to be an online live service then it needs to be like FF14 RR where you can plan even 10-year-old campaigns and quests. Destiny 3 needs to be a coherent experience from start to finish even if they add new expansions to it just like FF14 RR. And please no more milking, nickel & diming, triple dipping, and egregious mtx.
It would be odd to have two live services with Marathon also coming out. But I do feel with Sony playing the tough guy and reining in some of Bungies excess but giving Bungie all the creative control they need. They could learn from their mistakes and make a consistently good live service rather than the up and down cycle they seem stuck in.
I wish them well, they've been through a lot in the last year.
I would love a hard reset, so newcomers and lapsed players actually have a way back to the game. I've tried so many times to pick the game back up, but it's just way too complicated with overlapping systems and a convoluted story.
I really enjoyed Aspects of Destiny but certain things pushed me away. to me, it felt like my time wasn't valued - it was just about extracting 'money' by making older content 'useless' to make you keep grinding and/or paying for new gear/content.
I wouldn't buy 'Destiny 3' if they followed the same pattern as their predecessors.
@wildcat_kickz Absolutely this!
I have a fond spot for D1 and D2 and would love to go back but each time I do I am just lost I couldn't imagine trying that out as new player, must be a nightmare!
The gun play is still probably the best out there though and I will definitely get D3 if it ever happens.
Never really given it much of a go over the years but as I slowly fall out of love with the open world genre (due to ‘OW burn out’ I’m sure) maybe I’ll get back into the FPS genre once again, when/if Destiny 3 does happen.
Destiny 3 needed to happen 3 or 4 years ago they needed it on a new engine to remotely do what they wanted to do content wise. There choice to continue pumping stuff out for Destiny 2 has alienated alot of players.
@Mostik Yeah I put probably 1000 hours into D1 and was probably the most fun I've had playing a video game with others. Those D1 raids = chef's kiss. I played D2 through the first year, but fell off after that and just could never get back into it. When Sony started giving some of the expansions out as monthly PS+ games, I tried to give it another go and just got soooo overwhelmed. That said, I might just be too old for those grindy lifestyle games now, but would absolutely give D3 a go if they ever made it.
They need to find a way to release the content vault now that they know the THE FINAL SHAPE is the end of the campaigns. They physically know the final size of the game in total. Plus they promised they would have the content come back and to my knowledge nothing has so far.
I loved the game but that killed it for me.
Nah, zero interest. I've clocked several 1000's of hours across both games, bought every DLC and I'm done. I'll play Final Shape when it inevitably rocks up on PS+ and then my Destiny journey is over forever.
Bungie need to move on from Destiny as a franchise. Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed D1 and regularly play D2, but unless you've followed the various story arcs from season to season, it's very difficult to know what's going on. Add in all of the miss-management, vaulting of paid-for content, poor decisions in game direction and the sheer amount of time required from the player just to keep up... They need to move on.
Like others - I'm here for Final Shape, but that's just to wrap up the current story. After that I'll be enjoying other less-grindy games.
Like others have said, I definitely think a hard reset is in order. Hopefully they’ve learned from recent experience that you have to keep the game approachable to a new audience in order to keep the player base from dwindling.
I always really enjoyed Destiny, though I wasn’t one of those guys that is hardcore on the lore like others I know. As a casual experience, it can be a gameplay marvel. But the meta is so intimidating and grind focused that I bounce off it every time. I’d give Destiny 3 (and Marathon, as mortified as I am about it turning into a hero shooter) a chance.
@wildcat_kickz Spot on mate, those raids were class and I miss the commentary on the way down for strikes (whether we wanted it or not we've stepped into a war with the Cabal - RIP Lance) and Dinklage was the best Ghost
There’s a lot of hate in this thread. Yes, Destiny is convoluted, but it’s also a shooter unlike anything else out there. And it definitely still feels just as tight as it did when these guys did halo years ago.
Destiny 3 will be exceptional when it comes out, and I’m happy that bungie was able to create a game that lasted almost a decade now.
The real question is, when Des3 comes out, how will they respect & support the faithful that don’t want to leave their game world they spent 10 years with behind. I’m hoping that it’s a merciful transition, and am personally excited for the future. Long live delicious shooters & death to the CoD formula!

Lots of problems in the game for sure.
But honestly….Destiny 2 does shooting so well that there’s really nothing out right now that can match it.
That being said, I’m ready for the Final Shape so we can all hopefully put this behind us and move on.
I'll be there day one if it happens. Franchise will always have a spot on my hard drive
If they made a destiny 3 and it was a clean start to the story you could jump on like FFXIV Dawntrail I’d get it day 1
