Returnal developer Housemarque has this morning posted a cryptic tweet teasing... something for tomorrow. The team out of Finland uploaded a black and white image seemingly featuring Returnal protagonist Selene's eyes reflected onto broken shards of glass, then teasing news "tomorrow" in a yellow font. You can view the tweet below.
Tomorrow, 30th April 2024, marks the three-year anniversary of Returnal's release on PS5. That's probably enough time for the developer to have a new game ready to show, but such an announcement is usually saved for significant events like a PlayStation Showcase. As such, given the relevance of tomorrow's date, the news is more likely something to do with a development documentary, similar to what Naughty Dog has done with its two The Last of Us games.
Released in 2021, Returnal continues to be one of the PS5 generation's biggest highlights so far, with a very fast-paced rogue-like gameplay loop pleasing Housemarque fans. In our Returnal PS5 review, we awarded the game a 9/10 and concluded: "All the console's bells and whistles enhance the experience, making this a real showpiece for the hardware."
We then continued: "But more than that, the game is a force to be reckoned with; the breathless combat, super slick gameplay, and the subtle but unsettling story combine for an experience of surprising scale." It was later ported to PC and received a free Ascension update with co-op features.
Either way, we'll bring you word of what Housemarque has to share here on the site tomorrow. What do you think the developer is teasing? Share your prediction in the comments below.

Anything Returnal/Housemarque related is welcome (easily my game of this generation so far)
Unfortunately not a game for me, but I respect what they did with it and it looked to be the kind of thing that pushes the system to feel next gen and be a unique experience.
If they made a less rogue-like loopy entry in the series, or just a slightly more mainstream sci fi experience, then maybe that would peak my interest. But still look forward to seeing what they come out with next for the benefit of gaming overall.
I really hope for a Returnal sequel (whenever it’s revealed). What a phenomenal game.
The image implies they’ve broken the fourth wall and announcing PSVR2 support.
@R_Ryder I would love complete PSVR2 support for OG Returnal!!
Returnal was great, however once you've cracked region 3, that's it, you can breeze past the other biomes and all the way to the finish line.
Wasn't a huge fan of Returnal.
And early on, the clues about the twist in the story, became very obvious, which also killed the fun for me. A cliché that's been done to death in movies and tv-shows.
But still, the gameplay was well made.
I just wish they would make more arcade games, between their future AAA games.
Whatever this ends up being, I'm there for it.
Maybe they're adding an easy mode or manual saves.
Returnal is, without doubt, one of my all time favourite games. Can't wait to see what they're cooking!
VR mode? The mod on PC has been getting a lot of attention.
Not a fan of rogue-like games. Still gave it a go and could see why people that do like those kind of games would like it.
Fingers crossed for PSVR2 although that would be highly unlikely and tbh it is starting to feel like if you want any First party games in VR then get a PC. The June showcase can't come soon enough.
(Apologies for the moan, the Monday blues have taken over )
It's Returnal VR
VR mode would be immense but I would also love a Returnal spin off that's like Housemarque's old school arcade games. Would make for a good fillet game before their next big one.
3 years too late....
Returnal is the only PS5 game that actually feels next-gen.
Hands down my favorite of this generation
Will jump in to lump on more praise. Returnal is easily my favorite first party game this generation and one the best games I've played on PS5.
I'm not interested in a VR mode, but I'm sure it would be neat for those with the hardware.
Hopefully we'll hear about their next project in due course.
Absolutely loved returnal and it’s still one of my hardest platinums. It would take me some time to get back to my skill level I had when I played it back in 2021
Returnal was the best game experience I had on PS5 till Rebirth dropped
Can only ehco the comments here in that Returnal is possibly my favourite game from this gen
Love the studio but not into returnal’s genre. Would love to see what’s next from them. Cause they make really great stuff.
@Yorozayu I am not sure you can have a plural of greatest. I think the work greatest implies some sort of 'top of the list', i.e the one. But fair point, I guess you like it.
Woah, just this afternoon I reinstalled the game after two years.
Game felt and looked great but I wish you didn't have to restart from the start. Many of us may only have an hour or two per week to play. That makes it extremely frustrating.
Awesome game, a great PS5 showcase.
Could it be the return of Returnal?
Returnalal?
Doubt there will be any Returnal-related playable things coming but I'm curious what they have to show
I would love some sort of spin off adventure, maybe in the style of their old arcade games, starring Selene. Maybe Nex Machina or Matterfall or even Resogun style adventure with her or aboard the ship.
I would like a new alienation game in the same style of helldivers 2. Jesus that would be one awesome game.
@MBalz_EsHari they added in the ability to save and quit. It’s still a rogue-like so you still start over if you die.
@Americansamurai1 I PRAY this is reality
I should go back and replay Retunal. I played at launch before they nerfed the difficulty and made a save state option. It was tough as nails at the start but I grew to love it.
@Craigybear91 definitely would be nice.
@breakneck yes, my game of the gen, too! Can’t believe it beats out GoWR for me.
@ztpayne7 Yeah, that feature is why I bought it. But the starting over after dying got too much. I enjoyed the gameplay and mechanics, great game but not for me. I'm curious to see what the announcement is.
Returnal was a real surprise, such an unusual, starkly atmospheric game, that is to this day like no other... I platinumed it, got lost in it's combat systems, resulting in abundant respect for Housemarque!
Give me Resogun 2.
Ahh, here it comes... 😕
Returnal is one of May PS Plus Monthly Games. 🤦
Returnal was amazing once u get the game mechanics down isn't that hard certain guns can make ur run a lot easy like the Electropylon Driver and like someone else said when u get to biome 3 u don't have to restart from the beginning
@aj21009 kudos to resogun ! One of the best games on ps4!
VR support for returnal would be awesome. ... but, also very unlikely ...
Great game and very challenging Platinum! that said I wouldn't play it again nor would I want a sequel, I hope their next game is something new and hopefully not a rogue-like 🤞
@Ravix
And of course that's coming from a DD2 fan lmao.
That game is an outdated mess of a waste of time. Gave up after 30 hours and absolutely hate it along with its garbage writing.
But DD2 fans say nothing needs to be changed, so I'll say the same for Returnal: it was a challenging incredible game. A blockbuster game for true gamers, so yeah, it doesn't beed to dumbed down for the masses
@Specky it was a positive comment. I'm not calling for mass change to Returnal, their vision was right for that game. I'd simply like to see them bring similar complexity and depth to something else in the sci fi genre that i'd play. You need to relax about being so upset about DD2 everywhere because this has nothing to do with DD2 😅
You can still make art house sci fi, but in a different style of game, and not lose any of the qualities that make Returnal great. Or do you not have faith that the studio could pull that off?
I wish they'd go back to smaller games, but it's Housemarque so I'm down for whatever they do.
