Sand Land, the upcoming open world RPG based on Akira Toriyama's short manga series, will actually build upon the source material in some rather significant ways. Along with expanding upon the manga's existing story, it'll introduce an entirely new part of the world, comically called Forest Land.
The game's latest developer diary goes more in-depth, explaining that unlikely protagonist Beelzebub explores Forest Land through a whole new adventure, complete with original characters. And, like the name suggests, this is a lush location filled with greenery, which contrasts the endless deserts of Sand Land.
The two countries have never been on good terms — especially since Sand Land is so starved of water — and Forest Land's army is on the brink of taking action. If you're already familiar with the original manga, then it'll be interesting to see how all of this new stuff is handled.
Forest Land also plays a part in the ongoing anime adaptation of Sand Land, with the location — and from what we understand, some of its characters — having been conceived by Toriyama before his passing.

Do you need to watch the Anime to understand or play this game. It looks visually cool but I have not idea what kind of game this is.
@Darylb88 Nah, it seems to be an adaptation of the original manga and upcoming anime for the most part.
I'm interested but... too bad it's released on the same day as Stellar Blade, which takes priority for me
@ShogunRok the forest land arc is currently running on Hulu/Disney+
It's fantastic.
@tameshiyaku Well that's good to hear — I didn't actually realise that the anime is already out.
I’m lowkey excited for this game. Don’t know if I’ll buy it Day 1, but it’s getting my interest with the more news that comes out!
So the game will probably spoil the anime for me no? The game looks fun as heck, though
@ShogunRok The first 7 episode of the anime are just the movie spit into series format. After this it's the forest arc that has already started airing. From what I've read, Akira Toriyama wasn't directly involved in the forest arc, but he gave some notes, designed some new characters and gave his approval for the final script.
Darn. I thought the verdant areas in trailers were green because the player changed the world.
@CWill97 same. Looks like Mad Max but Steambot Chronicles or something.
