We know that Sony has invested heavily into Epic Games over the years, but it’s clear that the company holds its partnership with the Fortnite maker in extremely high regard. During its Corporate Strategy Meeting, the Japanese giant name dropped the Unreal Engine creator multiple times, across a variety of different mediums.
Obviously, we know Unreal Engine 5 is likely to become the de-facto game creation engine for most developers this generation, but Sony Pictures is also leveraging the technology for innovative new movie production setups – some of which allow it to create “virtual stages” upon which actors can deliver their performances.
It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that Sony has poured billions of dollars into the American firm – and we wouldn’t be shocked if it ended up increasing its stakes. Of course, it’s not the only investor funnelling money into Epic Games, as Chinese titan Tencent also has a 40 per cent stake in the firm, while Disney bought a $1.5 billion stake in the organisation earlier this year.

Not sure what the point of this article is? It doesn't actually provide any new information.
@Shwing you clicked didn’t you ? 😂
Ngl when they put the "Game engine" in the presentation I was like "Oh sh*t are they going to release an engine?" and then Unreal appeared and I remembered they own a piece of Epic ...
@Frmknst I think his point is that news sites exist to get clicks. If you click on an article, regardless of whether an article is useful/interesting or not, the news site gets paid. So if an article is getting "clicks" it's served its purpose.
Thanks Sammy, I certainly find this very interesting so please ignore those who clearly come to the site to moan at stuff.
It's good for the playstation business as a whole to have a significant stake in the company making the best engine for future titles, and also has one of the largest online games ever with much potential for crossover games and media promotion on said platform.
That they can clearly see the potential and have invested in it, is a sign that they haven't lost their knack for investing in future opportunities entirely, even if their head was turned by GAS like many others.
The Unreal-ification of gaming isn't necessarily a great thing
Games look too samey
Snowdrop, Insomniacs, Naughty Dogs, Decima, even Cryengine
Competition is good, variety is good
@MeatyVeg I agree, there have been many issues relating to Unreal engine games recently, some of which persist in Unreal 5 such as traversal stutter. I even saw some getting giddy over Hellblade and celebrating CD Projekt Red moving to it, all whilst Cyberpunk still has by far the best RT implementation I've seen
@MeatyVeg
Good point, but it's not just the engine that leads to these similarities, it's a lack of vision from the producers and those that green light games that's at fault. You can create some extremely different looking graphics in UE5 as long as you have a decent vision.
Whilst I've always been a fan of those who develop their own engines, in a world where devs and teams are losing their jobs due to titles being so expensive to develop, it makes sense to not reinvent the wheel and to use the toolsets that are already available. Its using them creatively that's the key and not copying the fortnite look or chasing boring 'reality'.
But teams like Insomniac or Guerilla should be applauded for the work they put into their engines - they are clearly a dying breed and should be treasured whilst we still have them.

Not me, I come to the site as I rate it one of the best PlayStation portals on the net... which is why reading such a non informative article is disappointing. There is nothing in this article we already didn't know, or has any relevance to a current PlayStation 'situation'.
@Shwing
Fair enough.
I hadn't read any minutes from the corporate strategy meeting, and so was unaware that they were referencing this partnership across many mediums. I suspect that a great many of this sites readers were in exactly this position and so it will be news to them too.
I commend you on your diligence to have read those minutes and therefore to have known that anyway, but you must be aware that most people hadn't?
Or are you selectively ignoring news you personally find irrelevant so you can claim there is no news?
Either way, I found it interesting and said why.
Have a great day
@Titntin
"Have a great day "
I will, thank you 👍
I am just glad Sony didn't make all their PC games exclusive to the Epic Games Store. That would have been a bad move.
I don't understand why Helldivers is not on Epic. Everything else is.
It's interesting for Sony Pictures, but less for PlayStation as most of PlayStation's first-party titles don't even use Unreal Engine.
I guess if Sony wants to try to cut down on game development costs, perhaps its usage will increase in-house.
Is it really.sony got a lots of partner.would that be cheating🤔😀 on the other partners sony loves word up son
@The_Wailing_Doom oh, as sound as all these companies are making decisions these days I wouldn't be surprised if epic store exclusive Sony games will be the next genius move they make.
Let me play my epic games library on ps5.
