As promised by Bethesda at the end of last week, the developer has today released a new PS5 patch for Fallout 4 that works to improve its suite of graphical options alongside "further fixes and improvements". The update is available to download now on PS5, weighing in at a tiny 189.4MB. You'll have it downloaded and installed in seconds.
Bethesda hasn't shared any official patch notes just yet for version 1.000.002, but early reports from players indicate the resolution and frame rate settings have been separated from one another, allowing you to adjust them independently on the title screen. You should now be able to choose between the three target frame rates (30fps, 40fps for select TVs, and 60fps) as well as either a native 4K resolution or a dynamic one. The update is also expected to fix visual bugs present in the PS5 version.
Update: As per Bethesda, here are the patch notes for PS5 update 1.10.985:
Xbox Series S|X and PlayStation 5 Display Settings
Thanks to your feedback, we’ve been able to implement the ability to control your graphic fidelity and performance. We highly recommend you run with the default settings but now you can change your options to better fit your playstyle and display.
Frame Rate Target
Frame Rate Target allows you to choose between 30, 40, and 60 (default). It is important to note that to select 40, your display must be able to support 120hz.
Visual and Performance Prioritization
You can now choose between Visuals and Performance (default) while trying to maintain frame rate target. If you choose Frame Rate Target of 60, we recommend selecting Performance. Both modes may adjust internal resolution dynamically when scenes or action get heavier. Please note both modes can only be changed from the main menu.

Interesting.
I think the next Starfield update also decouples resolution and target framerate selections.
I wonder if this will become Bethesda's default solution with these kinds of options.
Yeah it seems 1440p/60fps with Ultra settings can now finally be set in game. Hopefully DF cover this to confirm it.
so…how can i get it to play smooth like before the update? i’ve tried all the different 60/30 fps and performance/visuals combo and nothing feels right! i liked how it was and now it’s noticeably choppier for me, there a way to backtrack an update? i was playing 60fps and would like to continue but not choppy!
edit: i restarted my ps5 and the game is running smoothly now! 🤷♂️
@dre8472 so game runs worse post patch?
The new combo 4k + 60 fps seems to be the preparation for the PS5 Pro and successors to me.
I was looking around web and it seems few people now mention that it runs worse post patch on ps5. I'm now worried and will not be updating it when I get home for the time being until someone either strongly denies or confirms this is a case.
@dre8472 weird I’ve been having a blast so far with it on Performance Mode on my PS5 and haven’t noticed any unusual choppiness.. loading times are literally a game changer.. the world is beautiful (for a Bethesda game).. I’m pi$$ed I have to work and can’t roam the Wasteland today
Edit: I also haven’t played post patch 💀 sorry
@WolfyTn same, got a 100 hours on ps5 and now post patch it’s not as smooth at 60 fps performance.
@bamila that’s been my experience, wish i could roll back pre patch
edit: restarted my ps5 and game plays amazing now and agree with others that it looks crisper and runs smooth. not sure what was going on with me…but if your having problems, try the above. now very happy with the performance post patch
Game looks a lot more crisp and runs ever smoother for me. A bit gutted because I'd just finished Far Harbour before this patch.
Before we start crying all the wolves, I've been playing for over 2 hours since downloading the patch and performance is definitely better and more consistent.
I have been looking at playing Fallout 4 again after - funny enough - 4 years. But all these new issues kinda pushed me into replaying Cyberpunk 2077 first. Interestingly after all these years I still run into some design issues, but having fun so far. Excited to see what Phantom Liberty is all about^^
I hope the Creation Club quests aren't to long. Really don't like those non-voiced questlines, they just don't feel original. Maybe I can deactivate them somehow on ps5...or mod them out when I get to it xD
@McBurn you can't add or "disable" mods any action like that disables trophies so your only option is to just ignore the quests if you don't want to do them
Plus I've already finished with the main game of cyberpunk 2077 and phantom liberty (no spoilers here) but once I'm done I'm moving to fallout 4 PS5
@JalapenoSpiceLife : yeah, I thought more about it in a way how you can remove specific DLC from the game like the Automatron DLC, nice and safe without loosing the ability to get trophies. But yeah, Creation Club stuff doesn't usually show up there.
With the mods I would sacrifice getting trophies, I know. Still got a lot of time to think about how I wanna handle it. I kinda do wanna get the Platinum again...Will probably be a spontaneus decision as always.
And thanks for not spoiling Cyberpunk for me. Should be the standard to not do that, but I know it's not xD
@McBurn no problem, it's a long game including DLC but I'm not toxic enough to do that to you 😂😂 and yes anything you dislike about fallout 4 that you want to use mods with will disable trophies, so like I said before, any quest you don't like just ignore it and continue the way you to play is the best approach I can give now 👍🏾👍🏾
Was playing tonight and I noticed a bug well it was for me pressing would be Start to bring menu to save it stalls and locks up and it crashed. Shut down game started again went to save a long pause menu pops up and i can save it didn't do it before this patch
Meanwhile these updates do nothing for pc players and breaks a bunch of mods.
@JalapenoSpiceLife
Which is why i play on pc. Theres a mod that disables the trophy disabling lol
