Announced nearly four years ago, Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown is almost ready to roll out. The open world racer, developed by Kylotonn Games, will finally release 12th September 2024 for PS5.
The release date news comes alongside the above new trailer, comprising in-engine footage of the racing game in action. Set on Hong Kong island, you'll choose to side with either the Streets or the Sharps, driving clans each seeking fame and fortune with the world's most luxurious vehicles. You're free to explore the island, which is apparently a 1:1 recreation of the real place, and cruise around its varied locations.
Hopefully the game plays as good as it looks, because it's looking pretty impressive from a visual standpoint. If it can deliver some solid handling behind the wheel, this could be another great racer for PS5.

Hopes are high.
The Crew had the right idea, but as is typical with Ubisoft, they always rush the gameplay aspect. Couldn't hold up to Forza Horizon. Not even close. But I'm on PS, so...
Now this looks very promising. The idea is fun as heck, but if they can pull of the gameplay (they have experience), then I'm stoked
My expectations were low at first but with several delays, they seem to have listened to the feedback and took their time making it good. The trailer looks cool. Especially seeing older cars like the 2CV, Beetle, Stratos and Alpine. Fingers crossed!
I'm tempering my expectations. I've no idea of the overlap between development teams, but the Test Drive game on PS3 had some issues. My primary complaint was that the Lotus Evora, which you received as a prize, had the gears in the wrong order First, Third, Second, Fourth, etc. No idea how that got through QA.
I would like to play a decent iteration, though. Let's hope this is it.
I wonder whether it will look remotely close to the trailer on ps5 or whether one needs a cluster of 4090s ....
Hello there fellow gamers.
I have very fond memories of the original Test Drive Unlimited on Xbox 360.
That game paved the way to games like Forza Horizon and The Crew franchises.
I loved exploring the Island of Oahu with both cars and bikes.
The game was just fun and chill.
Hopefully TDU Solar Cown has the same spark and the same style the original had. We´ll see.
Cheers everyone and happy gaming
Actually excited for this. Hope it isn't a flop
Looking forward to this.
We really don't get enough car games lately.
Anyone know about wheel support?
Have seen a single second of actual gameplay of this game? I mean sure, we have in-engine footage... but that means nothing since it's not clear on what hardware it's running on, and is not at all reflective of the gameplay experience either.
Edit: Turns out there is some footage that looks like actual gameplay. Not on console though, so we'll just have to wait and see how this looks on PS5 and Xbox.
4years in the making, 2 years of online service and we're done
@KoopaTheGamer They had a live event with “influencers” playing the game about a year ago. It looked ok. I’ll get it regardless, I’ve always enjoyed the Test Drive series. The Duel, Off Road, 5, Unlimited. All janky but fun games.
Tempered expectations but I'll be there day one no doubt. Hopefully everything ties together well for it, always need more open world racing games!
Looks like an old PS4 game TBH. No where close to the graphic fidelity of GT7. I would say this game maybe a dude IMO.
Looks interesting. Unfortunately any game that requires a persistent internet connection to even start the game is a hard pass from me.
It will go the way of The Crew in a few years.
Oddly this trailer dulled my excitement. While this is all pre-rendered, the cars look like they're skating over the road (there's no visible wake left when they go through water) and at one point a car going through the tunnel veers left AND leans left - if you steer hard left the weight gets shifted to the right, so the car should lean right, not left!
Less than 5 months before release and we still don't have any uncut gameplay footage? What the hell.
Obviously a trailer, not representative surely of gameplay, you cant say it looks so good from that then..
And it's kylotonn, they are not great at optimization, no way it will be this clean, smooth on ps5.
Even in their rally games with one road and one car they cant optimize well enough, so imagine an open world with lots of cars, etc..
The story presentation is cringy as hell too.
Hope the feel is great though.
@stBoa This is the deciding factor if I get this or not. The Crew 3 has decent wheel support
Guess I am the only one that want's his racing games not open world.
What's up with game trailers these days going overboard with interminable dialogue snippets? Perhaps it's just my pet peeve.
@VatoLoco47 motorfest? Yeah was ok but found it tricky with the boat part etc
@stBoa Yea Motorfest. I haven't done the boat races yet, but in Crew 2 I just used the controller for those parts
God we need Microsoft to bring Forza Horizon over to PS, I played it at my mates house a few times and it was fantastic all these clones like the Crew and Solar crown just don't come close honestly
