Ahead of next month's Xbox Games Showcase, outlet Insider Gaming has posted a new report claiming Bethesda plans to announce a new DOOM game during the livestream, called DOOM: The Dark Ages. Sources tell the website the new title out of id Software will be "medieval-inspired", essentially confirming it'll be a prequel to the PS4 reboot and DOOM Eternal.
That's not all: in a separate tweet, insider Nate the Hate says the game will be revealed as a multi-platform game, with a PS5 version announced there and then during the show.
Following the release of Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Grounded, and Sea of Thieves on PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, it was assumed Microsoft would continue its multi-platform efforts with more ports. To announce a brand new game with a PS5 version right alongside Xbox Series X|S is quite a significant step above those late ports, however. Will it be the only Xbox game to be revealed for Sony consoles? We'll need to tune in to the Xbox Games Showcase on 9th June 2024 for the official details.

Delicious and Doom should never be platform exclusive as it’s for the people ❤️
Well I'll give Microsoft some credit for a change, Doom is so rooted in gamer culture I'm glad it's staying multiplat.
Sooo..Heretic?!
I just had a realization the xbox showcase is actually the playstation showcase we keep hearing about
"Medieval setting in The Dark Ages"
DOOM: Castle DOOMenstein
I think its best to assume any MS game will be hitting PS consoles.
Medieval doom?! Sounds absolutely brilliant.. and coming to ps5!
Well they might as well get more for producing game that will definitely sell well on PS5, probably be a switch 2 version further down the line.
I own all three consoles so I don’t really mind.
I have game pass so I get it day one with my subscription and I think releasing on other platforms will help game pass keep getting those games day one due to the returns on investment releasing on PS5 and maybe switch 2.
I know Sony make money selling consoles and it’s different for them to keep their exclusives tight to their console base.
One day in future we might see all games all consoles, but I definitely can’t see Nintendo doing it.
Not a big Doom fan but this certainly gives me hope for Fallout 5! Nice!
Cool.i had a feeling the next doom will come to ps5.its all good.word up son
@Balosi More like BETHESDA is rooted in gamer culture, everything of theirs should be multiplat.
So Doom and Heretic/Hexen finally meet. Damn nice.
Big DOOM fine since 1993, looking forward to it!
X Gon' give it to ya.
@CaptD theyre givin alright
All of the other recent Doom games have been multiplatform. I don't understand how this is news. Years ago, Xbox said that they wouldn't take games away from players who were already part of a certain community or fan base. The fact that the new Doom will be on PS5 is an absolute given. It always was.
Can you imagine how much damage Microsoft/Xbox's already paper-thin reputation would take if they made Doom (or any multi-platform franchise exclusive)? It would be immense. If it's true Doom is remaining multi-platform and that was always the plan, I'll give "Gaming for All" Phil some credit because it's actually one thing he didn't lie about. The man took more games away from players than he gave to them, but after the ABK acquisition caused the eyes of the shareholders to actually look at Xbox for a change, they are forcing games to go multi-platform to grow revenue. That likely wouldn't have happened if they didn't buy ABK. Phil got his wish, but the monkey paw curled.
Well yeah, Xbox is done with exclusives now after the massive success of Sea of Theives on PlayStation. Pretty soon we'll be able to play Gears and Halo on PS5 too.
@The_Wailing_Doom Sorry. What games have Xbox taken away from PlayStation players?
@__jamiie their responses to direct questions about these franchises has been very evasive. They talk about established audiences but wouldn't commit to any particular franchise being guaranteed to stay multiplat. It's pretty safe to assume they are making sure their options are open.
Cool, I quite enjoyed the last two games. Although Doom Eternal dragged on a bit and was definitely not a relaxing game to play lol
@__jamiie
Starfield, Redfall, Hi-Fi Rush (until shareholders forced Phil's hand recently), and Hellblade 2 (the first game was on both Xbox and PlayStation). I mean they are all stinkers except Hi-Fi Rush, but PlayStation versions of at least Starfield and Redfall were canceled when "Gaming for All" Phil bought the studios, which is the point I was making. Likely, ports of those and every Xbox game will come eventually as Xbox transitions into Microsoft Gaming under the watchful gaze of shareholders finally noticing Xbox.
@TheArt Nothing Bethesda compares to the gaming legend that is Doom. Bethesda has a place in gaming history. Doom IS gaming history.
And Doom isn't really Bethesda any more than it's Microsoft. Doom is Doom.
@__jamiie No that's not what was said...this comment refers to existing games like ESO and Fallout 76....it was even confirmed ES6 would have been exclusive
Doom would be exclusive if Xbox consoles weren't a disaster right now....MS spent $80B on 2 publishers and want to make that money back
Expect ALL future MS games to go multiplat including Gears and Halo, the days of Xbox exclusivity are done
@Luigia Then people should buy an Xbox or a PC to play it, but MS threw it in the towel so it doesn't matter, ALL MS games will go multiplat
@RoomWithaMoose Um no...Microsoft owns Doom lol no amount of your mental gymnastics will change that
Microsoft now becomes the most powerful publisher in the world...and it came at the cost of destroying its own console
@The_Wailing_Doom And what do Sony do? More Xbox owned franchises are on PlayStation than the other way round. People act like Phil is evil and Sony are some kind of benevolent not for profit that only does the best for the industry.
@Ergoshotz The days of consoles are over. Next gen will be the last. Xbox have been saying this for years. Sony still want to sell you a box under your TV. Microsoft will be earning billions from PlayStation and yet you see it as a win for Sony because they'll have more boxes under the TV. Very odd logic. And when it comes to hardware and software, Nintendo will continue to obliterate both when it comes to sales numbers and profitability.
Medieval Doom sounds like the original Quake to me. Bring it on!
I'm going to go ahead and call that this will be a Quake crossover. If it is, I hope it is not spoiled at this event. They've alluded to this sort of thing for a long time now.
Doom is my favorite game and series of all time. I'm absolutely stoked for this. I know DoomE turned some people off, but I played that game for hundreds of hours.
...maybe it's time to reinstall?
I hope they absolutely nail it. I have a lot of faith in id.
@__jamiie
Aside from Bungie, which comes off to me as a knee-jerk reaction to Xbox's buying sprees, PlayStation only purchases studios they have a history of working with and certainly never bought any publishers to gain control over game franchises that are already popular elsewhere. That is the key difference. Microsoft and Sony both do timed exclusivity deals, so no real comparison to make there.
I think there is also a difference because Xbox is out there acting like they are super pro-consumer while making these ultimately anti-consumer, industry-damaging moves. PlayStation doesn't say nearly as much as Xbox does. Phil loves the attention. The guy buys up studios and all their studios are epically mismanaged, but he says nice things and wears gaming t-shirts, so we're supposed to like him? Nah.
@The_Wailing_Doom Every single studio under Sony has been bought. When they launched the PlayStation there were no internal developers because Sony didn't make games. They bought them. And they've closed a lot of them. A LOT of them.
Microsoft were making video games in the early eighties. What have they done since that has been anti-consumer when it comes to PlayStation gamers???
@Balosi Microsoft doesn't deserve any credit. Doom, Wolfenstein, Elder Scrolls, etc were already multiplatform, and should stay multiplatform no matter who owns Bethesda. Similar to how Bungie announced that Destiny and any future games would remain multiplatform even with the Sony acquisition.
@The_Wailing_Doom Exactly! I often see people trying to compare PlayStation's acquisitions of individual studios that they have worked with - many of which already made PS exclusive games - to Xbox's buying of entire publishers. There's just no comparison.
Uncharted, TLoU, Ratchet & Clank, etc all began on PlayStation and were funded by Sony. They were never on rival consoles, and nor should they be. What Xbox has done is swoop in and buy up whole publishers and then say, "look at all these exclusives we have under the Xbox umbrella!"
@pyrrhic_victory
I totally agree with you. It is absolute madness when people compare the two strategies or justify Microsoft buying Bethesda to make Bethesda games exclusive because Sony pays for timed exclusivity here and there. Apples and oranges.
Also, awesome name.
@DennisReynolds seems Xbox is going the way of Sega
Medieval setting sounds pretty cool actually.
To be fair to Microsoft they never said they would not release bethesda games as exclusives. They have always said that it be a case by case basis. And this would be the first game released from a already established franchise.
Every other game released have been new ip.
So maybe I have my doubts on them keeping it as their own but got to think they ain't got that many playing on xbox so they would be foolish to not release a game like doom on every platform. Money is the aim of the game.
@Ergoshotz gamers win if we all get to play 👍🏻
Isn't medieval Doom just Hexen?
@Bez87 Starfield was announced to be coming to PlayStation before the Bethesda acquisition and then Microsoft cancelled that version as they wanted a system seller. If they think a game could help move consoles they definitely will keep even established franchises on Xbox only
@__jamiie It's pretty clear why this is news. XBOX lies a lot. This time it seems they didn't lie.
@Ergoshotz Yes Microsoft does own Doom. Amazing observation.
The point is that Doom is bigger than Bethesda and bigger than Xbox.
@GamingFan4Lyf I’m thinking Quake one vibes
Well they've got no choice because Xbox is a dead platform.
My available gaming time would never support GamePass. My backlog is so massive, I never need to buy a new game. And if there’s one I want, 50% off is 6 months or less. Much better value for me than a sub.
@lacerz So you like playing old games... gotcha.
Thank goodness I prefer to live in 2024 with brand new releases.
What’s the point of Xbox if Microsoft releases games on everything including competing consoles.
@Jay767 The point is to sell those games at full price to PlayStation gamers while keep them almost for free for GamePass subscribers.
I think it's an amazing strategy.
Sounds like army of darkness
@__jamiie yeah because history tells us that every Nintendo console sells by the bucketload erm no. If we follow the Nintendo trend there next console will be a failure lol
SNES-win
64-fail
Wii-win
WiiU-fail
Switch-win
Switch2-…..
@Gamer_X The strategy they were just forced into after Gamepass numbers have flattened? The one that has nothing to do with their original Gamepass strategy? Gamepass is great and all but going multi-platform with their big exclusives was not the "strategy." They aren't playing 4D chess here. They failed to get the traction they wanted, and now they're going with plan D. Most likely the penultimate contingency before plan E, Sell Sell Sell.
And for your other petty, fanboyish response about "old games" um, yes? I think games are better than ever but gaming is a cesspool, especially in the AAA space. Hell, I have to play comfort food games every now and then to get over the depression caused by certain AAA releases. And what new games are you babbling about on Gamepass anyway? Almost every one of them introduced this month could conceivably be in a back log. Besides Hellblade 2. That masterpiece.
I'd love for XBOX to be relevant again, but trying to make up for the XBONE's failures is just not working like they hoped. Phil said it himself. They lost the most important generation they could have lost, when everyone was building their digital libraries and familiarizing themselves with online marketplaces. I want them to have a come back. I just don't see it happening.
@lacerz Absolutely. Gamepass is a firehose. With a PS5 and a Switch, there's no way to work full time and keep up. And that's with me having one of those jobs that allows me to play games, one that is 90 percent boredom and 10 percent ohshitohshitohshitohshit.
I am boycotting everything Bethesda creates because supporting them means supporting Microsoft. What kind of a man would I be if I give my money to such a horrible corporation like Microsoft.
This message was sent using Windows Phone Link
It is logical step. M$ wants money and they would be stupid to lock themselves out of quite huge chunk of marketplace.
@__jamiie the days of consoles are over? I've said this before but there are way too many gamers that can't afford a top tier gaming PC or don't want to because they game for a hobby and consoles such as the ps5 and xbox provide a gaming experience that is simply more than enough for them. Consoles will always be a viable option.
@__jamiie "Every single studio under Sony has been bought. When they launched the PlayStation there were no internal developers because Sony didn't make games"
This isn't true. Sony has internal devs before they launched PS1 because Sony Music has some experiences with video games.
There's also Sony studios that born after merged with Sony internal devs. Example London Studios born from Team Soho (Sony internal devs) and Psygnosis merged.
Oh wow, this just reminded me of the never released Hellraid. Techland's medieval open world horror fantasy. Coming off the back of the Dead Island games. The demo reveal looked amazing back in 2013! Always hoped this would get picked back up.
@Frmknst But how do you define the good ones? Do you only play the games with highest Metacritic scores with no room for personal taste?
@PuppetMaster Japan Studio, London, and Pixelopus are dead. Xdev is a support studio. Like I get what you are saying, but you are talking about the Sony that we all wish still existed, not the one we have.
@Mikey856 You forgot the GameCube… which was also a failure
Doom Eternal is my favorite shooter ever, so this is exciting. Although I don’t know how I feel a bout a pure medieval setting.
I love how Eternal had a huge diversity of settings.
@GrimWillows hellraid was released but not as a standalone game. I think it was an expansion for dying light.
@AverageGamer damn I did lol cheers 🥂
I hope it's more like 2016's DOOM and less like DOOM Eternal. I had a blast with the former, but not so much with the latter. Glad it's coming to PS5! Keeping an eye on it as I'm likely to buy if it plays more like the 2016 game.
@LikelySatan : If you think paying full price per each title is better for you then it's a win-win situation for everyone, you get to play the game, Microsoft gets full revenue from you and GamePass subscribers play the games for a fraction of the price.
👍😁👍
@rjejr Quick copyright that!!
Genuinely want that to be the name, well done 🫡
@Gamer_X I'm not sure that's the slight you think it is........
@Benjiro Freaking loved DOOM, Eternal was okay. I think I only put 10 hours into eternal and every time I think "I really should go back and finish it.... and I just can't excited"
@CallMeDuraSouka : It doesn't get as clear as that....at the end Microsoft gets full revenue for each title sold while GamePass is kept fully funded.
@LikelySatan My post isn't about which Sony studios is dead or alive, but it's about false statement from Jamiie who claim Sony never established a studio nor Sony doesn't have internal studio before / after PS1 launched.
And XDev is still one of Sony internal studio who helped plenty of 3rd parties to developed their games for PS. Their job is pretty important for Sony and 3rd parties.
Good to see that it's seemingly no longer Xbox exclusive.
@PuppetMaster the eh...list pared down a bit, huh?
@PloverNutter actually your very much mistaken.
Starfield was never announced for playstation ever.
This came out through the court hearings of the FTC in regards to buy out of Activision.
Documents suggested it was a multiplatform game but of course it was a multi platform game at some point, development started before Microsoft bought them.
Bethesda was a Multiplatform company.
Microsoft bought them and they said very clearly that it would be a case by case whether or not it would be multiplatform or exclusive.
Which is what I said. Every new game from the Bethesda brand apart from those of which had a contract with playstation before hand.
Came out exclusively.
Redfall
Hi-Fi Rush
Starfield
All titles are new ips.
Nothing has been released under Microsoft which was a staple multiplatform franchise as of yet.
Doom will be the first to see if they keep those game multi or convert to exclusive.
Nothing was mentioned when they bought Ninja Theory towards exclusivity, we didn't know whether they would be doing a hellblade 2 or new ip at the time.
The mistake which Microsoft always makes is they think buying studios with success is the answer. Its like them trying to cut corners.
I mean they took tomb raider when that game had always been a multiplatform game.
Then they took hellblade a game designed for playstation before hand and was exclusive bought them and thought o a sequel would do well on our system when the original was a ps exclusive. Same mentality they had with tomb raider i guess.
I dont see them making that mistake again with a popular and well known franchise.
You are close in your assessment, @OldGamer999; Nintendo will continue to keep all its games exclusive to its console, and PlayStation will fairly soon be able to both bring it's games to all high-end consoles and keep all its games exclusive to the PlayStation. How? Because the days of the Xbox being in the 'high-end' console business are numbered, as I suspect that the next Xbox will be a hybrid-handheld, and that there will not be a true successor to the Series console. So, by virtue of being the only remaining 'high-end' console, PlayStation will be able to have its cake and eat it...
Hellblade 2 will be on the PlayStation in the next 6 to 12 months, @Bez87, and Starfield will come to the PlayStation towards the end of this year, once the upcoming DLC has released. It is entirely possible that this will actually be announced during the Xbox showcase on the 9th of June...
Hellraid did release, @GrimWillows. Well, sort of! It is available as DLC in the first Dying Light game...
@Gamer_X
In a more eloquent way of saying it, MS is offering the product to more players while creating value for gamepass subscribers.
Its really a win win. Gamers who either dont want or cant afford multiple consoles now have access to a game and those that can or have the xbox or pc as their primary platform can gain more affordable access to the games.
I own all, love all, and really like the model ms is building here.
I fully envision a world in 10 years where tvs are embedded with gamepass by default and the consoles themselves are optional devices sold at cost for those who want or need local play. The potential to expand the business line is exponential.
Things have changed dramatically at Xbox, @LikelySatan, and it is not as much of it being a case of things failing at Xbox, but more that following the ABK acquisition, Microsoft have taken the reigns. Phil Spencer is no longer calling the shots, which is why we are seeing things both being contradictory to what Spencer had said in the past, and also occurrences that fly in the face of what is actually beneficial to Xbox. These decisions are now being made directly by Satya Nadella and Amy Hood in order to maximise the return on the investment, even if that ultimately brings about the demise of Xbox (as a console). It is also very likely why Spencer has not been heard from in recent times (since the announcement of the closure of Tango) as it is rumoured that he does not support many of these decisions, and rather than stand front and centre and toe the line, he is simply remaining silent...
@Fiendish-Beaver you are completely right and the whole dynamic has changed now that Microsoft are becoming a third party publisher they've basically said as much just not as direct as that.
But I was more talking about what they was and wasn't going to do at the time all these things were announced alot had changed since then.
@Fiendish-Beaver
Think you could very well be right there, but only time will tell.
However I’m not sure I want just a Lord Sony PlayStation world.
They can be funny at best of times without them being a superpower god.
@LikelySatan Still doesn't change any fact that those studios was established by Sony, not bought.
At least Sony doesn't stupidly spent $70+ billion to established their internal studios, unlike some company who thinks buying major 3rd party publishers can killed their competitor and fixed their 1st party output but in the end they shoot themself in the foot lmao.
And despite the unfortunate fate, at least Sony gave a lot of freedom and creativity for Japan and London Studios for decades to pumped out plenty of memorable games such as as Legend of Dragoon, Ape Escape, Parappa the Rapper, Wild Arms, Arc the Lad, ICO, Shadow of the Collossus, Bloodborne, LocoRoco, Patapon, Gravity Rush, Demon's Souls, Soul Sacrifice, SingStar, etc. So many different IP's that i guarantee wouldn't be green light if Japan and London Studios under EA, Ubisoft, Activision, Bethesda, or Microshaft.
Even Pixelopus, which consist of 9 college students and 1 industry veteran, managed to made 2 fun non-big budget games / new IP with Entwined and Concrete Genie.
@Fiendish-Beaver I think its great for people that cant afford two consoles.
@PuppetMaster I'm reticent to give them all the credit they deserve, and I admit that part of not wanting to do that is because they have pissed me off so much this gen. Sony was such a bright point for so long. It's depressing. I play my Vita more than my PS5, and (I say it all the time here, sorry) almost exclusively play PS4 games on my PS5. Sony hasn't lost their entire identity yet, but maaaaaaan are they close. I think games are better than ever, but I would go back to the PSP/PS3 days any time. That was just a great gen. Competition was fierce.
I don't think M$ has the same potential in the IPs they are sleeping on, but I can't believe how idiotic they've been now for a generation and a half. The joke has always kind of been "Yeah yeah, Gears, Halo, Forza," but they haven't even taken advantage of their acquisitions in a meaningful way, and now studios are being closed. They could be knee sliding playing a guitar solo this gen with IP's from the studios they've acquired. And I'm not big on exclusives, but I understand their importance and honestly would've had more respect for XBOX if they had the balls to follow through and make some exclusives. I'm more frustrated with them than I have been with a major player in a really long time. Probably since the Dreamcast. And if they shutter id, heads will roll.
@LikelySatan Don't get me wrong. I gave Sony some credits where credits is due. But they also has a fair share of big mistakes too. Despite PS5 sold well, there's plenty of big mistake courtesy of old Jimbo who thinks Sony needs to go ham with AAA games, acquisition war with MS, and follow the current market trend with live service games, outside the increased PS+ price, closed down Japan Studio who actually one of the main source of Sony AA & experimental games, closed down London Studio who actually did well with SingStar series, and more mistakes that i'm just too lazy to list in here lol.
And yeah i quite agreed with you that Sony in PS3/PSP era actually produced more cool / quirky games which sadly a lot of them was a flop..sigh. I'm not sure what the hell was happened back then when very fun games like Puppeteer, Tearaway, Patapon, or Gravity Rush who received positives reviews from critics but the sales numbers was dissapointing >.<
But with old Jimbo gone, maybe new SIE leaders can try return to that era again but with more prep time? I mean, we already heard from Insomniac leaks that they want to do more AA games because spending $200-300 million for a game is just not sufficient anymore. And the latest word from PS Production president, Asad Qizilbash, about a shift from visual / graphics to memorable experiences seems like a better sign compare to old Jimbo "more AAA + live service games" era...
As for MS, man, they need to cleaned up their big mess asap if they still want to compete with Sony and Nintendo. But i guess that's too late now? Hmm...
@PegasusActual93 Not at all. I get what you mean, but a huge part of Doom up til 3 was exploring the level and secret hunting after you've cleared out the main mission area. I miss those quiet moments in Doom, and feel like thats one area the new games have failed. Now they have giant markers on the map screaming SECRET which...means it's not a secret. And corpse-stay was important to remind you of areas you've been when mopping up secrets. And so was save anywhere functionality. Old school Doom and new Doom are just different beasts entirely.
Maybe it will suit those that cannot afford (or do not want) two consoles, @11001100110zero, however, the biggest problem is that if there is only a PlayStation, then Sony will not need to keep the price of the console close to that of the Xbox. If you recall, Sony announced the price of the PS5 a week after Xbox, and speculation prior to the announcement was that it was meant to cost more, but Sony reduced the price to match the Series X. So, if Sony do not have to worry about matching the price of the Xbox, then you can expect them to sell the PS6 or beyond with a healthy profit, which whilst it will be cheaper than buying two consoles, will still probably add a considerable chunk of change to the cost of the next console. And that's before they then feel empowered to increase the price of games too, so likely as not, we the gamer, will get shafted to a greater extent than we already do...
Nice I had a feeling that Doom would be Xbox only.
Hoping they make ES6 and Blade multi platform as well otherwise they’ll lose out on loads sale for ES6
@OldGamer999 also, for every multiplats Sony gets 30% of the price, although I'm not sure about it whether it's a fact or not
@2here2there
Yes I think it is something like that.
Business is business.
@CallMeDuraSouka It's too good, they'd never use it.😉
Thanks. 👍
that means microsoft has had plans for a ps5 release for some time now... they were never "testing the waters" for future ps5 releases and that was all a lie just as predicted (xbox didn't want to come across as weak or desperate, so they put a PR spin on it of course). at some point, i have to imagine microsoft knew they were going to take this path when they realized games pass wasn't sustainable and their console sales were faltering. perhaps in 2022 they pivoted and we are now seeing the results.
as for the new doom. sounds like doom in the quake universe to me which can only be a good thing (gothic setting).
I’ve been playing Doom 2016 for a week or so, and I was thinking, I wonder if we’ll get another one, the 2 days later this pops up😂. I bought my first PC in 1995 to play Doom, it’s still a fantastic game, and as others have said, Medieval Doom sound like Heretic. I still remember seeing an animated leaf blowing in the wind in Hexen and thinking “Wow, we’re living in the future!”
@get2sammyb Yes, but please, no more platforming in Doom!
@The_Wailing_Doom Lol. Do you really think Microsoft cares about little outrage on the internet?
People are going where the games are. They don't care about "outrage" of small core audience on internet forum thinks.
For Microsoft it's about money (what isn't). After ABK purchase they need to get their margins on a certain level, and this is a result. It's a stupid and short-sighted, but what are you going to do?
If Sony bought this it most definitely wouldn't be multi platform
@PloverNutter Starfield was never announcd for any platform and no, even games like Gears and Fable will go multiplat
If Microsoft cared about moving consoles, Doom would be exclusive
