You may recall when the PS4 launched, EA Sports marked the occasion with Madden NFL 25, a game which dropped the expected title of Madden NFL 14 in favour of a wholly different number all together. The idea was to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary, which got its start all the way back in 1989. Of course, it also raised questions about what the publisher would do with 2024’s title.
Well, now we have the answer: it’s called Madden NFL 25. In a potentially malicious move designed to break video game website databases around the world, the annual PS5 and PS4 sports title will adopt the exact same title as its decade-old predecessor. The name was confirmed as part of the MVP Bundle, which incorporates the upcoming EA Sports College Football 25 as well as the latest Madden game.
EA Sports is keeping the lid on Madden NFL 25 for now, while it focuses on promoting its long-awaited college football game. You can check out a trailer for the latter through here, which represents the first entry in the series in a decade. Are you planning to pick up the MVP Bundle, or is that simply too much football? Toss a Hail Mary at the comments section below.

They couldn't have at least called it "Madden NFL 25 2"?
Just wait when we get to 2063. It'll happen again with Madden 64 lmao.
@tameshiyaku Eh?
"Madden NFL 25 2: Summerall's Revenge"
Madden NFL 25 The Sequel.
Definitely remember having this thought back in 2014. Pretty sure Doom (2016) and God of War (2018) broke those databases the same way though. So we will just have Madden 25 (2014) and Madden 25 (2024).
Madden 25 sequel edition.haha.word up son
Slight tangent but I don’t understand why NFL and College Football are two separate games.
Wouldn’t that be like releasing EAFC and then a whole separate EAFC for lower league football.
@BeerIsAwesome What remake/remastered game titles in the past decades that didn't come out with "remake", "remastered", or a variation of "reloaded" in their title to differentiate it?
You really could not see the difference here?
Now I can make a joke about how I played this game back in 2013 😎
@QiaraIris God of War on PS4 is sort of a reboot of the GoW series, but has the same exact name as the first game in the series.
@HeeHo
I think there's far more teams and more divisions in college football compared to the NFL, so that's probably the reason they're separate releases (also this being EA, money is the main reason).
I don’t care what it’s called. As long as does not exclusively depict amateur college Toilet Bowl content (as opposed to anything NFL).
Not even going to stream that for free.
@QiaraIris. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
Kratos says hi.
@get2sammyb just thought there's bigger playstation news (possible portable device in development) than that madden is named the same, but I then thought, you do you and report what you want, hence I deleted it.
@rjejr
Isnt the 2nd one "BOY edition"...
I can’t wait! From what I hear, Adrian Peterson’s on the cover, and it’s only $42.63 for a refurbished PS4 version on Amazon.com. How is it refurbished if it hasn’t yet released? I don’t know, but if it’s on Amazon, it must be right. Those guys are funny—they say it’s been available since August of 2013. Pfft…jokers! I hear it looks and plays just like the old Madden 13 but with 30 new moves, and it’s even gonna include 2013-2014 NFL rosters because, you know, retro is HOT these days! My sources say there’s PS3 version, too, with—get this!—a cover featuring Barry Sanders. Woah!
I always find reboot stuff like this where they just use the original name kind of dumb and very uncreative, but to be fair for this one, I'm not sure how many Madden fans remember that the game from about 10 years ago was named anything but the year of the game, unless I'm misjudging and it's a really memorable franchise moment for Madden fans.
Anyways, my least favourite instance of this reboots-taking-the-same-name-as-the-original phenomenon is Lords of the Fallen. The "franchise" had one game, they decided it needed a reboot, and they just gave it the same name! So we have a franchise with two games, one of those being a reboot for some reason, and both games sharing the same name...
"What's your favourite Lords of the Fallen? Is it Lords of the Fallen, or is it Lords of the Fallen?"
@Rich33 That's a special edition boxed w/ the boy amiibo so it doesn't count. 😎
Makes sense, it’s been the same exact game since 2014 anyway.
Should've called it the new one Madden nfl 14
@HeeHo because they operate completely independently of each other
Can’t wait until 2125 to see what Madden calls it then
@BHPM It's not a reboot, or even close
The Madden timeline no you can't. 14 just had to be 14 25th Anniversary but nope.
Like MotoGP16 they had to change the title for marketing.
The time continuum will break. I can't wait till the 30th anniversary year breaks it again.
Y2Madden must stop.
That nonsense bad joke and possible Scott the Woz Christmas special aside.
It is odd. I get oh the next one but 25 to 15 must have been confusing somewhat right?
Or oh not 360/PS3 one or databases with years being annoying thanks EA.
Also the FIFA change made me think it was all their sports licences but wasn't.
@rjejr Well there's also:
etc
@HeeHo College football and the NFL are pretty different versions of the same sport.
Different rules, different styles of offense and defense.
And already mentioned, College has hundreds of universities vs 30+ for the NFL
@PuppetMaster Yeah but Kratos is a bit more Sony centric than the rest and this site is also Sony centric, so I put 2 and 2 together. Had this been IGN or some such I made have made that same list. Also laziness.
@rjejr ok
@MeatyVeg It is in the sense that they decided to overhaul the franchise (a franchise of two whole games haha, and only one before they decided it needed a fresh start) and start fresh, doing a fresh take on the franchise, going as far as calling it the exact same name (often relatively characteristic of reboots, such as God of War and Tomb Raider). But I respect your opinion my friend, it's not a very well-defined term at times! The amount of times I have heard people argue semantics over if something is a remake/remaster/enhanced port/reboot/etc is pretty comical at this point
Unsurprising and stupid. They could have easily called it Madden 2025, but they don't care. This is the same company that also released two mostly unrelated Star Wars Battlefront games and their identically-named sequels a decade apart.
I mean it's probably the same game anyway.
@QiaraIris
Off the top of my head, I can think of two unrelated games named "Prey," two games named "God of War," two games named "Twisted Metal," two games named "Tomb Raider," and two games named "Doom." There are almost definitely tons more.
CC: @BeerIsAwesome
EA are experts with this already...
Medal of Honor (1999 & 2010)
Need For Speed (1996 & 2015)
Need For Speed Most Wanted (2005 & 2012)
Star Wars Battlefront (2004 & 2015)
Star Wars Battlefront II (2005 & 2017)
You mean Madden 08 lol they've been the same game with a roster change each year like FIFA and people still buy it
Expect AngryJoe rant
Since the original Madden 25 didn't release on PS5, doubt it'll cause an issue there.
I only came here for the "it's the same game anyway" jokes. There were fewer than I expected.
