Atari's mission to bring back its old franchises continues with Yars Rising, a new and very different entry in the series. Instead of an arcade shooter, this new game, developed by WayForward, is a side-scrolling Metroidvania, and it now has a release date. The game is coming to PS5 and PS4 on 10th September 2024.
The gameplay trailer above should give you the gist. You play as a hacker named Emi Kimura, and her mission is to infiltrate the evil corporation Qotech and uncover their sinister secrets. You'll explore a large map and slowly gain new abilities, allowing you to delve even deeper.

A big part of the gameplay involves hacking, which is where the old school gameplay from Yars' Revenge comes into play. These hacking minigames incorporate mechanics from that 40-year-old title and gradually become more and more complex.
Yars Rising will be available digitally on PS Store, and there will also be a physical release for PS5 if you're so inclined — PS4 players will have to stick with the download version.

Looks really cool! It's from Wayforward so it should be good.
Me being nitpicky but I do wish it had either pixel or 2D artwork but I'll take the 3D.
I've said it many times before but, I really like the direction that 'new' Atari is heading. Lots of nostalgia whilst also trying new things. And the 2600+ is a fantastic mini console that a lot of others could learn from.
It’s a bigger deal that this is from WayForward than Atari. They’re almost always guaranteed quality!
interesting. I thought WayForward is working on the next Shantae.
Now we just need some Demons to Diamonds games, some Outlaw games, and some Air Sea Battle games. New Surround and Dodge ‘Em games would be good, too.
