Activision has officially put a date on Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, showing off the spy action thriller and announcing it will launch on the 25th October on PS5 and PS4. With store pages now live, it didn't take eagle-eyed viewers long to spot some new additions, such as this year's edition requiring an always-online internet connection to play multiplayer, the campaign, and Zombies.
On Twitter, the account Does it Play? has a vested interest in such things and read the fine print on the recently published Editions support page for the game. Under the "Is an internet connection required to play Call of Duty: Black Ops 6?" section of the page, it says:
"To deliver the highest-quality visuals while reducing the game’s overall storage space on your hard drive, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will use texture streaming across all game modes. You’ll need a continuous Internet connection to play any game mode, including Campaign. If you’re on a console, campaign can be played without a premium subscription service such as Game Pass Core or PlayStation Plus."
Is this a W or an L? Is requiring an Internet connection for the single player campaign a cause for concern, or is it just the cost of doing business today? Pour one out for game preservation in the comments section below.

And just like that, COD died.
RIP and good riddance. Haven’t liked the series since it left the WW2 era.
Didn't they also reveal that it's gonna be around 300 GB? I hate this direction that AAA games are taking...
Online connection to reduce hard drive space yet its 300 GB and thats without a day one patch. Il never understand why COD is never optimised. Should never be bigger than most open world games
Lol no thanks
@Platinum-Bucket Yeah 309GB and always online. The constant texture streaming could also reduce the life of the your SSD.
@GamingFan4Lyf 90 million players on cod mobile alone which btw is always online. yeah i think it will be just fine
@GamingFan4Lyf you missed out on a lot of good call of duties then .
That is gonna go down well.
COD is dead to me. Same old rehash. And bloated size. Meh.
@Danloaded yeah I think it’s all the textures of the microtransaction skins they use. Even if you never buy any, they’re all stored so you can see other players that maybe have them. There’s so much bloat in these games. I wish you could just restrict the skins to reflect the era & relevance to the game.
I miss the days when a COD game didn’t have SpongeBob or Rick & Morty characters running around the battlefield.
@Toot1st does cod mobile have campaign though? i never knew that
Please stop the bloat, compress some audio, make language audio an individual download instead of packing in 5 different languages, and fully segregate warzone to its own download. Heck make 4k textures a separate download I sit 6ft away a higher fidelity than 1080p has no use.
Oh noooooooo. Guess I'll skip this like I have every one of them after MW 07.
@Danloaded I wouldn't be surprised if compression is a lost art due to publishers' fear of piracy...just like always online BS.
@Platinum-Bucket From my understanding it's could be around 100gbs and the 300gb is combined with the other CODs.
I was going to try it out on Game Pass, but after learning I still had to download the stupid CoD HQ app AND BO6 on top of it, I'll pass.
Just when I get excited for new cod this year (the trailer looks good) activision/microsoft does this 😕
@GamingFan4Lyf The campaigns have been REALLY good for a lot of them. If you can get Infinite, MW new one, and Cold War cheap I'd seriously recommend them.
Texture streaming is honestly an interesting avenue to tackle bloated sizes. That being said, the game is apparently 300GB so yeah, COD devs just don’t believe in compression..?
@LikelySatan you missed out on some good call of duties then
Casual players aren't going to care one bit.
@nomither6 That's like saying I missed out on "some good Sonics." Lol. Eh, no. No I did not.
I lied anyway. I did pick up Blops 2. That was trash, despite the good word I kept hearing about it. The games aren't for me.
Besides, I'm not big on caring what social media says I should fear missing out on. It's CoD. I don't care.
Cold War is my favorite Call of Duty experience. I've skipped the last couple entries, but the direct today was incredible. They said all the right things and showed some incredible stuff, so sign me the hell up!!
I don't understand the issue with people not liking always on line?
It's 2024 everything is connected to the Internet now. 🤷
@Bagwag82 ...because the game will disappear, which means they are telling us this is disposable.
@Bagwag82 You will understand once you experienced your ISP had a maintenance for hours and you can't play your always online games.
@PuppetMaster or the psn 2011 outage, lol
I lost interest in cod a long time ago. This isnt the way to entice me back.
@nomither6 Yeah that was sucks but a very rare case compare to ISP having a maintenance that can be happen a couple times /month.
And there's also time when you can't login for a couple of hours because PSN / Xbox live / Steam etc had a maintanence.
But the worst case is when publishers killed the server after a couple of years and didn't let players to play the game from private servers. That will make these "always online" games more useless than garbage.
This is why "always online" sucks really really bad. But hey, we got people like Bagwag82 who never thinks this isn't an issue because his internet is flawless. So no wonder some publishers are still doing this bs practice :/
309 gigabytes how did we get here like seriously that's almost all of the series s storage space
Well...I was briefly interested with the Early 90's setting.
@Bagwag82 So stay connected to your matrix capsule. But most people just don't like it.
Streaming textures HAHAHAAA I don"t eat their lies...
Splendid i was unlikely to play it and now i definitely won't. This sort of thing needs to be resisted at every opportunity.
@CallMeDuraSouka Maybe if Microsoft does a massive COD dump on Game Pass I will give them a go.
I won't be getting BO6 now. Even BO 4 which had no campaign could be partially played offline. And the excuse for the always online is pathetic.
Feels like business as usual now but will I need a Xbox login to play, is a more
relevant question.
The always on connection is annoying especially when its simply for texture streaming. I and a lot of other players only ever play the campaigns. Why can't they give all players the option of only installing the features they use and let us download a texture pack separately. Let us decide how much of our SSD we want the game to take up.
@MrMagic @Platinum-Bucket im going to assume yall didn’t read into it. It’s 309GB now for the beta as they continue to remove modern warfare’s from it. They said in the same article it would go down in size for launch. There is no way some of you should be commenting on article if you aren’t reading the info. Cause you got people thinking stuff thats not true and it says it in ENGLISH in the article.
@Drago201 loook at my post above. It’s not 309GB, it has modern warfares in the beta will be removed for launch. Reducing the size by a lot.
@HonestHick I was basing it on the Xbox store page, which states the 300 GB approximate size. https://www.xbox.com/en-GB/games/store/call-of-duty-black-ops-6-standard-edition/9N58QRBG9WDG/0017
I've got zero clue how cod goes about all its betas, so you're probably right? Still seems weird to have it listed as such on the store page, but I hope you're right and it isn't a third of the console's space.
@HonestHick I was looking at the store page but it's good it's gonna be reduced thanks for the info 😉
@Platinum-Bucket @Drago201 i think they have to list the beta at what the file size will be. But they stated in an article that that size includes older titles that will be removed for launch. Now i am certain it will still be 100GB. But not 300! 😊
Thanks for the enlightenment to the helpful responses to my comment. Now I get it so yes always online is bad.
To the others who are a bit sarky in their response. There's really no need to be like that is there. 🤷
@nomither6 Played MW1/2/3 and the reboot of MW, BO/BO3/Infinite Warfare. My favourites where The MW reboot campaign and multiplayer, MW2 also both, and BO the campaign and multiplayer. Infinite had a horrible multiplayer. I didn't finish the BO3 campaign I hated it so much. Fun games indeed but after the ridiculous sizes for the install I stopped getting the other games.
@HonestHick Still a lot for a game where I still need to be always online to stream certain stuff of the game.
@LIKELYSATAN With BO2 I really thought my PS3 was broken it looked so horrible i sold it two days after release. 😅
@Flaming_Kaiser it’s a big file size every year for sure. As for the online, devs stopped caring about the 10% or less that whine about online games while always being online. If it helps the game and it normally does, they are going to do it. I for one don’t even turn on my PS or Xbox if the internet is down. To me they are always online machines. I understand that don’t work for some people but again 90% or more don’t see it a problem or complain. The whole world runs on Wi-Fi these days.
@HonestHick I have to be honest here i buy less and less games from the big companies. I spend more on LRG then in then with normal releases.
Retro and games that are patched from there I even bought the latest Horizon though the completely patched game and fully on disc. You are free to have your preverence just like I have that same choice.
I like the option to play older games down the line and able to play it in the future without worrying if they don't shut down the servers. Games are getting more monetization and more expensive and you own even less with less options then in the past.
And the new generation doesnt know any better than that they have been brainwashed that it's normal how it is. Pay more for less with even less options or pay nothing and let game run on whales.
@Flaming_Kaiser i can agree with that. Especially since it fits your play style. Nothing wrong with it. I play a little less games these days, mainly cause everything is a Soul’s game, Rogue, or battle royal, all of which i have no interest in playing. But i don’t let the tech get in the way of my purchases if i really want to play the game and enjoy it. I have been all digital since the start of PS4 and Xbox One, so physical does nothing for me but i am happy it’s around for those that still like it. Even tho Sony and MS are slowly phasing it out. I like some retro stuff, but i find PS to be lacking more than MS and Nintendo there. Once they get it more figured out it will be nice to have great older titles on all 3 platforms. 😀
