Fear Effect, especially its sequel, is perhaps best remembered for its titillating magazine ads – but this was a decent PS1 action-adventure series for its era. And now, courtesy of original publisher Square Enix and Limited Run Games, the original outing is making a comeback on PS5 and PS4 in 2025.
“A lost classic finally returns,” the blurb reveals. “Fear Effect challenged assumptions on game aesthetics and art style when it debuted on PlayStation, and decades later its extraordinary blend of cell-shading and motion video still dazzles the eye – and the mind. Gunplay and magic meet in this groundbreaking action-adventure coming to a console near you in 2025.”
It should be noted that Fear Effect hasn’t been entirely forgotten in recent years, as isometric tactics title Fear Effect Sedna launched on PS4 in 2018. Unfortunately, it wasn’t especially well received, earning a dismal 3/10 in our Push Square review. “While in theory it ticks all the boxes you’d expect for a story-driven real-time strategy game, the woeful voice acting, rubbish combat encounters, and a cavalcade of other frustrations make this more of a real-time tragedy,” we wrote.

I think for a PS1 title the graphics have aged surprisingly well.
LRG only? sigh...
With all these obscure classics getting an update, it gives me hope for Freedom Fighters and Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction 🙏
Great! Stoked for this
Since when was this a classic? You gave it 3 out of 10, not sure how that translates to the game being 'decent'. I played it at the time and it was crap. This game is a classic in the same way white dog poo nobody sees any more is classic dog poo.
God I LOVED this game, as typical as a child I never finished it, such an amazing atmospheric game. I may be tempted with this one.
Nice! Really enjoyed this series back in the day. Given the physical is LRG only, I wonder if the inevitable digital release will be another addition to PS+ Premium?
Truly unique art style. And the second game came on four discs.
Had some major flashbacks when I read the title to this article. Was such a good game.
@colonelkilgore I've been praying for The Thing and Freedom Fighters to return forever. We've got The Thing coming. Fingers crossed for Freedom Fighters. I'd love a full on remake of both though.
This game was rubbish tbh. Pretty much the only reason it was popular was because of its softcore porn moments.
@LifeGirl .....sold ! 🤣
@riceNpea If only you could comprehend words that you're reading
@lifeGirl Nah the game was really good. Arguably the best looking PS1 games with a fun story in an interesting setting

@riceNpea The one Push Square gave 3/10 was FE Sedna, not the first game on PS1 which is a classic.
@LifeGirl This game was popular because it was one of the first game who tried to do cell-shading like graphics for the characters and blend it with full motion video environment. Plus, the story, writing, music, and gameplay was pretty tight.
This news makes my Friyay!!! Been wanting to replay this again since I installed it on my Polymega but now I’ll wait for the PS5 version.

Wasn't the first game supposed to have been getting a remake?
Oh they did make a third one didn't they? Forgot all about that — yeah I remember playing 1 which I found clunky as hell, but FE2 was noticeably more refined.
@AdamNovice
Yup. I was looking forward to it, guess this is better than nothing now.
This is good but it would be better if Square-Enix give some remaster love to Vagrant Story and Parasite Eve.
@AdamantiumPriest Yeah i would love a re-release for Vagrant Story and PE 1 & 2. I try to get a mint copy for these classic but they're pretty expensives. And it would be cool if SE do Xenogears and Brave Fencer Musashi too.
