Whatever your opinion of the content, today’s Xbox Showcase felt more like an E3 press conference of old. Ever since the pandemic, and the untimely demise of the Los Angeles convention, livestreams on that kind of scale have been few and far between. Last year, Sony hosted a PS Showcase, but it lacked the clout and confidence of an old PlayStation presser; a little over a week ago, it settled for a simple State of Play, which we already argued wasn’t really fulfilling fans who wait all year for these kind of marketing blowouts.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, PlayStation’s social media is already being peppered by disgruntled fans, desperate for the format holder to step up its livestream game. “I hope you watched the showcase,” one fan wrote. “This is what we want.” Another added: “Bring us a showcase this good.” One more simply settled for: “Learn from [the] Xbox Showcase, Sony.”
Of course, this is the kind of overly reactive silliness that we’ve come to expect from social media, but it does present questions for PlayStation as it pushes forward deeper into the generation. Sony has, in recent years, changed its strategy to focus on imminent releases: its big games from the recent State of Play, the likes of Concord and Astro Bot, are due out within three months. LEGO Horizon Adventures and Until Dawn don’t currently have dates, but aren’t expected to be too far behind.
Microsoft, on the other hand, spent a lot of time re-treading old ground today: Avowed, Fable, Perfect Dark, and more were all first revealed several years ago; Gears of War: E-Day, the big closing reveal, will likely show up at several more shows.
Sony, in the past, was criticised heavily for revealing games too early into development; now it finds itself underfire for not following that same philosophy. It’s a case of damned if you do, damned if you don’t, then – but ultimately, as we noted, the reception doesn’t lie. PlayStation hasn’t put together a universally praised presentation for quite a while, and at some point, that will need to change.

We want Sony to pay to show off third party games? Sure, sure. Sounds like money well spent.
Nothing I saw today was all that interesting to me (Astrobot >) but If it means Sony get a kick up the arse I'm all for it 👍
Whether it's money well spent or not, I know that the MS showcase, along with The Future Games Show, got me more excited for upcoming games than Sony has managed for over a year now. I'm really glad I have invested in a behemoth of a gaming rig as I will not be going back to Xbox, but there are plenty of games coming from the Green Team that I want to play.
Agree, Xbox nailed it. Fable, Perfect Dark, Doom and Gears all looked amazing. Except Astrobot the showing of Sony was as they say it in the UK *****.
Well over half of the games shown are coming to Playstation, plus quite a few games were also shown/announced at last year's showcase and are still years away, so I'd rather Sony just show what's coming within 12/18 months than show stuff years away and showing it multiple times.
Also that Showcase consisted of three publishers (Bethesda alone showed 5 trailers), if you want Sony to have the same to show off then someone best give them 70 billion so they can buy multiple publishers, I'm sure it's easy to show off a lot of stuff when you're one of the biggest and richest companies on earth. Anyone asking Sony to match Microsofts output is asking for the impossible and as its asking Sony's studios to output multiple games at once.
Plus there was trailers for updates for 4 live service games included, if that was Sony they would be getting destroyed for that.
Why would we even need one when 12 of the games shown at the Xbox showcase have been confirmed for playstation anyway and there's a couple more awaiting confirmation.
Not to mention the Xbox 1st party games that'll probably get ported at some point and the expansions/dlc's for games that were already on playstation.
This is the second year in a row they have failed to deliver something half as good as what Xbox gave its fans. Try harder, Sony.
Treading old ground while giving us new looks at gameplay, etc. and new games like Doom: The Dark Age and first reveal of State of Decay 3 and Flight Simulator 24. To say this was all just treading old ground is a bit disingenuous. Plus gave us looks at things like Expedition 33, Mixtape and Wuchang that will be on GamePass.
In any case, do hope Sony gives us a showcase like this soon because it was excellent.
I’m in that camp, it’s time. Xbox had a stellar show, and though we know “games are cooking” at PS Studios, the ball seems to be in Sony’s court now. Microsoft has confirmed they’re all in for gaming, and that fans have a lot to look forward to from them. Here’s hoping the PlayStation showcase (if it’s happening in September) can match it. There’s no need to console war on any of this either! We all won today as gamers, and will win more if Sony knock it out of the park with their next show just like Xbox did today.
@MrMagic While all fair points, I'd argue PlayStation should be putting together a presentation that fulfils their fans irrespective of what Nintendo, Xbox, or anyone else is doing.
The endless angst for showcases is one the stupidest parts of gaming.
I don't want a showcase with games that has no release date. It's like the third time we see fable and it's targeting a 2025 release, same for South of Midnight. C'mon, event the Starfield DLC didn't have a release date, just a generic 2024.
And that console....man, MS really wants to kill his console at that price
@MrMagic This goes the same way for PlayStation showings (e.g Monster hunter). Xbox had far more first party to show let’s be honest!
A lot of the stuff they showed should have been shown a lot sooner and still has no release windows. That said, that was one hell of a show and actually had things I was seriously interested in. I haven't said that about Xbox games in like a decade. A well-deserved kick in the arse for Sony. Currently, I can't complain, but they are annoyingly quiet with a lot of their first party studios.
And supposedly Xbox is dead. That was a show worth watching
@naruball You mean the 18 first party games shown at Microsoft’s presentation wasn’t enough?
Dragon Age and potentially Fable are the games I'll be playing from what XBox showed me tonight.
Sony gave me Behemoth and Astro.
Two each.
A good haul.
I don't care about the pacing of the show or how bombastic the announcements were. That's just side dressing.
@awp69 I'm pretty sure State of Decay 3 was already revealed too, and even if that was the first time they've shown it, I don't think there was a date, which means there's a possibility we'll see it again next year, too.
Which is somewhat my point: Sony, generally, has been choosing not to do this of late. (Although there are a few exceptions.)
@Enriesto Well, look at what they cooking 🤮 Concord haha
@Fartingale Tend to agree but it's always a big talking point for enthusiasts every year, and likely always will be.
@awp69 you mean they should buy a couple of publishers so that they can show off 18 first party games?
Are we throwing realism out of the window?
Sony can’t do it, they don’t have the studios/publishers/money to do it.
But Sonys current strategy seems to be not revealing things too early either. Astro/lego games have only been mentioned recently and release within a few months.
@dschons Same. Xbox shows haven't done anything for me since 2013. This show tonight gave me two games. Fair enough I already knew about both, but it's still nice to hear something about them and to build that hype.
Makes me wonder if Sony are being strategic here.
Obviously they have games cooking, but they haven't felt the need to get ahead of themselves for a long time because XBox haven't had much to flaunt.
Maybe if XBox start showing games again, and early too, Sony will feel the need to counter.
I'm one of those people who usually wishes everyone would stop complaining about not knowing what we'll be playing in two years because there's too much to play now.
But, I reeeaaaaaally want to see Wolverine too.
@Fartingale Showcases mean games. We want games or at least a sign they’re on their way. Most first party studios are just sat on their hands if their lack of announcement or glimpse into their work would have you believe.
Naughty Dog have known for a while their live service offering was off the table and even when they were working on that they were working simultaneously on their other offerings. Give us a bloody glimpse for christ sake.
Sony is DOOMED (also coming to PS5).
Sony isn't even worried and everyone knows why. They will 1000% continue doing what they have been doing for the last 4 years and it will only change if Microsoft shows a real threat (selling more consoles)
Not saying it's right or wrong, it's just how they're operating. I don't think any online outcry will change that.
Also, it's going to be the best time of the year to see everyone complaining that Microsoft simply showed more games but purposely forgetting that they bought half the industry. Sony will only have big games to announce from time to time, and it's good for people to get used to it.
@naruball There were plenty of internal MS Studio games in that presentation. Gears, Flight Simulator, Fable, Age of Mythology, etc. so whatever.
@Sanquine Well that's obviously because Sony's show was just a State of play so it isn't really a fair comparison anyway.
@get2sammyb Sure they should put on a showcase in September but there definitely isn't a shortage of games like some people try to lead people to believe.
I suppose the sooner the better for people who need content for their articles though.
I’m done arguing. I just want PlayStation to have a showcase like this. But if money hatting games like Stellar Blade from other studios is the best they can do, at least they’ll still be something to play.
Give Microsoft their flowers. It was a very well put together show. It was well paced, had a good variety of games (something for everyone - although did slightly lean too far into their image of old in terms of the genre of game they are known for), and - crucially- gave xbox owners an idea of what else is coming this generation. That was exactly what Microsoft needed. Another flub and that was it for them, but I am genuinely seeing enthusiasm online and rightly so.
Personally I find these kind of shows build hype and excitement - and I would love Sony to put out something similar
Sony won! They don’t need to please their fans. We got Astrobot which I’m loving. Song take every penny of mine and I promise never to complain 😋😋
I’d have to say the reverse, it’s Xbox who have finally learned how to do a showcase lol
@awp69 you spoke of 18 first party games, so "whatever" indeed. Also, you may wanna keep in mind how few xb games have been released since the current generation started as opposed to ps games. Had Sony followed MS' failed strategy, they would have had more games to show at the moment.
I guess I'll be in a disappearing minority if I say that I don't care about game shows at all. I care about actual game releases, that happened, not were promised somewhere in the future. I don't need a console to watch trailers on YouTube. Sure, some trailers make me feel excited for some games, but I don't believe in promises and when a game I'm interested in finally comes out I'm always waiting for review scores and never preorder.
Having said that, I'm very happy with what Sony delivered. If I were an Xbox owner instead, I would have to switch.
@Shepherd_Tallon I was wondering whether this was a strategic move by Sony as well. I truly hope so and the reason they're not showing anything isn't development hell or some sort of inner turmoil. Because let's be real: They didn't have to show anything basically as the consoles were selling like hot cakes regardless 😁
@naruball I did speak of 18 and there are. I have no disillusions about that MS owns. I’m glad they have them and they had plenty homegrown games too. Either way it was an awesome showcase. Period.
Love my PlayStation too and have gotten most of their exclusives this gen. But they’re getting too quiet and want to know more of what’s coming. Awful to say that isn’t it?
I love how everyone (not everyone but a loud crowd on the web) think that Sony has nothing in the pipeline and are just dead in the water lol. The latest interview with Cerny he said that game development is a choice. Devs (and respectfully) their pubs are allowing the 5-6 year dev cycles as feature creep and expanded scope and story keep being such a focal point. I have no doubt that great games are coming from Sony (they havent been market leads for this long by not delivering) and the vague 2025 on a lot of the titles today are probably in place to mitigate backlash for them missing their date, which we don't even know lol. I'm glad some bangers were shown today. Xbox has spent damn near 100 Billion in the last 3 years. It SHOULD be resulting in impressive games. But damn 33 and E-Day stole the show imo
@ManifoldCuriosity “tHen wHy are You On A pLaYstaTion SiTe?!?!?” you can’t be here if you have more than one platform you like to play video games on or like other brands too!
oh, and no criticism allowed unless it’s xbox! Sony could be at its worst but you better kiss their you know what!
@Nyne11Tyme - Nah, I'm pretty sure every single player game got cancelled and Sony only does live service now. /s
I have all 3 consoles and after that show not to have an Xbox and game pass is almost crazy.
The value is looking great now.
I’m actually looking forward to playing my first COD campaign in over a decade.
Adding third party games I pay for on series x the console will be my main console now.
As for Sony I shall wait until they decided to return with some of their fantastic big AAA campaign games like the Uncharted’s etc. I know one thing I won’t be getting a P55 Pro if it releases this year, no point really until the games start coming.
As for Nintendo it’s a waiting game for Switch 2 and new big AAA games from them.
@awp69 no it isn't awful at all. Never disagreed with any of that. I specifically replied to each individual point you made, if you read closely.
This is why I don't understand the hope some people still have for the demise of the Xbox brand. PlayStation needs strong competition, and for the first time in a long time, Xbox delivered something good. Your turn, Sony...
@awp69 to be fair, using the term 'money hatting' while arguing the case of a company that bought up half the biggest publishers is a tad ironic, wouldnt you agree?
Good show from xbox though. Some good games in there, both exclusive and multi platform.
I'm worried that a full feature astrobot game is going to end up being a disappointment. Absolutely loved the first one but it was free and a perfect length with collectables. Full price and longer length might be too much for a good little thing. All the comments are how great it's going to be. Think they should of gone the vr route with same sort of length. Xbox had a great conference good for them. Sony we need some big games to look forward to.
@Gamer83 Realistically, what can Sony do at the moment, considering how long it takes to make a good game? I'm genuinely curious how you think competition works.
Sony is not sitting on their butt doing nothing. They're making excellent games that take time or they're cancelling games (like Factions 2) when they don't look promising. They can't rush things, if they want to keep releasing quality games.
Competition from MS and Nintendo doesn't magically change anything. Sure, they may be forced to show CGI trailers to appease fans, but it's not like their games are gonna come out sooner.
Unless I'm missing something (which is always a possibility).
I wonder how certain people would act if Sony spent 70 billion on Ubisoft, Square Enix, Sega and Capcom and had a huge Showcase showing all their games, they wouldn't be singing Sony's praise il put it that way.
@Weebleman Only reason I said that was because of the hate MS is getting here from studios they bought. People may not like it but it’s reality now.
@UltimateOtaku91 I’d still be praising it. I have both consoles. All I praise is great games and this showcase gave that to us. If Sony did the same, I’d absolutely give them just as much credit whether they bought the studio or not.
That xbox show was an all timer. I understand the sentiment of these online posters because it was well ahead of the other shows this "e3 season." That said I don't think sony needs to focus too heavily on competing with them on showcases. They are doing fine with their current course.
exactly what you said no matter what they do people will complain because they are never happy. even though naughty dog has said several single player games are being developed right now, and many other first part studios are working on single player games as well. would you rather they develop these games or waste time to make a 1 min teaser trailer. the fact that sony's been able to keep alot of this under wraps just makes whatever they show and when they show it a nice surprise.
that being said i think slitterhead , where the winds meet , phantom blade just a couple of games that where shown off all look amazing , if those games had ps studios in front of the trailer people would be going nuts over them.
For a showcase you need to have games to show. And you can show live service games only so many times…
Yeah, MS buried Sony with that showcase. Fable and Indiana Jones alone were pretty heavy hitters. If people are on the fence now as to which platform they want to invest in for the foreseeable, I think this might have just won them over to the green side.
A more lengthy showcase with more stuff would be nice!
@naruball People have unrealistic expectations with Sony, they have what half the studios Microsoft has? Yet are expected to release the same amount of first party games 🤔, this is why it's good Sony get third party exclusives to fill in the gaps whilst their studios are hard at work.
This year we've had Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, FF7 ReBirth and soon to be Silent Hill 2 Remake, then add titles like Until Dawn and TLOU 2 Remastered, HellDivers 2, Astro Bot, Concord and Lego Horizons which make this year pretty damn good for Playstation and has more exclusive games than Xbox and Nintendo this year. I Honestly don't get the hate, we eating good as they say
The Xbox showcase was much, much better then the recent Sony stream. I agree with the article, it legit felt like old-school E3.
But both the Xbox and Sony streams were loads better then the Summer Game Fest, I mean let's be real here lol.
@naruball With everything being streamed online, having a good presentation isn't about money but rather knowing your audience, curate accordingly and have a bit of showmanship. The "Sony doesn't throw around money like Microsoft" argument doesn't fly with me. Especially when even indie showcases manage more interesting line ups than state of play.
90% of the Xbox showcase games were third parties that are all coming to PS5. Even Doom and CoD, first party games are coming to PS5. While the Xbox fans cheer as this being the best showcase in years and supposedly PlayStation fans being insecure I'd say it was very kind of Microsoft to pay for the best PlayStation showcase and making an even better job at selling PS5's 😂.
Also, anyone noticed how many times they showed in huge letters "Day One on GamePass?" They're clearly desperate to garner attention towards it aren't they?

I live and breathe playstation but damn, today's xbox show really showed up sony marketing department. I will not jump ship especially with my backlog of smash hits to play (i literally just added 5 more ps3 gamws to it) but I need the excitement of what is to come for the ps5. I don't even need games, I just want the ability to play streamed games on portal (even if they restrict to owned games) but I wished they would just emulate ps3 software so I can play my collection
We got the PlayStation Defense Squad in these comments (reminds me of the good ol' Wii U days wipes tear). I'm willing to give PlayStation some slack this year given that Astro Bot and LEGO Horizon are just the breaths of fresh air I've been wanting for years now.
But still, Xbox's showing was absolutely better. More games, more interesting new IPs, fun nostalgia bait (who the hell would've guessed Perfect Dark would actually look good?), and nice 3rd-party reveals. It was a better show, and that several of Microsoft's "internal" games are coming to PlayStation doesn't reduce that.
I would say Sony's direct was a tad more packed than people remember (it was just a lot of forgettable stuff). If they just had a few big titles (what the f*** are half their studios doing?!), it would've been comparable.
Sony are terrible with communication. But most of their games hold no interest for me anyway.
You get what you are given I suppose.
Microsoft just did the advertising for Sony, since all this games will most likely come to PlayStation, including the first party games
Literally nothing Xbox showed even remotely interests me. Except maybe State of Decay 3 which is likely years away at this point. 3 years and still no gameplay or release date? What a joke.
Even though 99% of the games that were shown at Xbox showcase will be multiplatform, these type of presentations still matter to generate hype surrounding the brand of the big 3.
The fact Yakuza and Metal Gear are being first shown on Xbox platforms and not Sonys where it originally started means Sony is in a tough spot if it doesnt start providing excitement to its customers and to the people who are still playing games on ps4 they are trying to convert.
Sony might be generating alot of money with the ps5, but the sales of the consoles are in need of a serious boosting.
we are 4 years into this console lifecycle, you cant tell me in that time they have nothing to show, not even a trailer of some sort
I'll give them credit for showing more new titles form their first party studios, something that Sony really needs to take notes from besides announcing ports of games we already know about.
Gamers®️™️©️ are not smart
@Fartingale well maybe if we had just kept announcements to E3 and only E3 we wouldn’t be kept in a perpetual loop all damn year long. The games industry created this f*cking frenzy by switching to this format.
@naruball Factions 2 wasnt cancelled because it didnt look promising though. sony cancelled it because they didnt know how to monetize it. thats why it was scrapped.
@UltimateOtaku91 Dude c'mon you know damn well this felt like the E3 presentations of old, how many games were actually Xbox exclusive is irrelevant. In fact if it wasn't for Astro Bot I would call this a better showcase for PlayStation then their crappy, boring State of Play.
@naruball 18 First Party games shown by the way, and also even if we were to make the whole gamepass/third party debate, this was better than ANY Sony showcase since the 2015 E3 holy conference.
And this is coming from someone who is regularly critical of Xbox and their decision making, but it’s simply the truth.
This isn’t related but isn’t it funny that Xbox are now currently creating more first party narrative linear titles than Sony because they chose to chase the live service beast and are releasing probable stinkers in Concord and FairGame$, I never would’ve saw that coming at the start of the generation.
@naruball Hit the nail people automatically become industry specialists to match ‘their’ expectations. Hardly any logical thinking goes into these complaints, they know the industries shifted it’s tone, it takes longer to produce quality over quantity, it’s not as if they don’t know and sitting on their a** they are leading the market and competition is healthy for the whole part of it. The silence is deafening and that’s the main issue, but I truly believe when they eventually pull themselves together and communicate better it will shift the tone massively. I agree that communication is lacklustre but teasers/trailers are all hype builders when a product is ready that’s the main part, do we want to know what’s going on? Yes. But I guess only time will tell and patience that doesn’t really exist in the social world of gaming. Based on history the latter half of the generations always come out the strongest titles. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the year pans out.
@get2sammyb "I'd argue PlayStation should be putting together a presentation that fulfils their fans irrespective of what Nintendo, Xbox, or anyone else is doing."
That's exactly what some of us want! why is it written law that Sony has to put out the worst showcases/state of plays and Microsoft/Nintendo get to have exciting E3 level presentations?
Quite a few of the first-party games Microsoft showed were announced in 2020, and still don't have release dates other than "2025". The main reason Sony don't have anything to show to match Fable/Perfect Dark/Avowed is because they already released their games that first got announced at the same time (Forbidden West, Gran Turismo, God of War).
That's not to say Sony shouldn't have more to show, but I'd rather have the games already have come out rather than waiting five years for them.
What a show that was! 2nd year in a row Sony has been shown up now. 9 games and expansions coming to gamepass this year and 11 next year. 12 once u add on the next COD. 2 games from Sony for this year. Astro Bot is obviously a must buy but concord looks awful. Can't think of any that we're announced for next year.
Xbox just took Sony and SGF to school on how a game showcase must be !
I'm not exactly an Xbox fan, but the best way to describe it would be "Damn, now THAT's what we want!"
Oh, Sony... get back to the lab and overhaul your entire current approach to presentations and marketing 'cause Xbox made you look like an inexperienced newcomer... And take Geoff with you, hopefully he'll pick up a few pointers too.
Meanwhile FF7 Rebirth still the highest rated game of the year, Helldivers 2 among the best selling. Concord claps every hero-shooter shown in SGF and Astrobot highly likely to be a GOTY (contender).
Hermen ain't worried about nothing after watching that. Indi Jones and Avowed still no date despite coming within 6 months.
I think there will be a big PS Showcase when they will be revealing the PS5 Pro imo.
Also you have to remember that all the games at the Xbox showcase were multiplatform whether they were Xbox/PC only (still considered Multiplatform) or later revealed to be releasing on PS5 too.
The Xbox showcase wasn't just for Xbox fans but was for PC fans (like myself) and for PS fans.
I didn't watch it but i check the list and like half of the games they showed will also release for PS5 which possibly the version that most people gonna buy. I guess thanks MS for paying half of Sony's marketing? Lol.
I personally only care for Doom: The Dark Ages which is looks great. But i heard the music isn't by Mick Gordon. So...
@CrackmanNL except FF7 isn't a PlayStation Game and won't stay ps5 exclusive. HD2 PlayStation helped abit but it's not a PlayStation studios game and the player count has tanked alot even by live service standards and the whole stupid needing psn for it.... but still going well so that's fine.
Concord hasn't clapped anything and I'd have thought the one from valve will probably be better and more successful because valve 🤷.
Personally I'm not even vaguely interested in Astrobot but saying GOTY contender already is a massive stretch..
I feel like Sony purposely waited to see what Xbox showed off before they had a showcase of their own. This isn't the first time they've done this either to my knowledge! Now that Sony saw what Xbox showed, they can plan their own showcase accordingly. I mean, it's obvious we're getting one here soon (September like in 2021 maybe?) to show off the PS5 Pro. I'd also suspect they show a bunch of first party stuff running on the PS5 Pro, such as the rumored Horizon Remake, Ghost Of Tsushima 2, Spider-Man 2 DLC, and MAYBE the rumored Venom game.
Dunno, from what I've seen online only fans in NA liked the Xbox showcase while people around the globe had a mixed reaction.
It felt like an E3 showcase, but seems like it didn't have the same impact.

People are crazy. Whether Sony shows us what games are coming or not, they are coming.
Removed - trolling/baiting; user is banned
It’s amazing how many Xbox ‘fans’ are here to defend them instead of just enjoying what they have just seen.
Pretty sad tbh.
@Gamer_X
But what does a showcase mean? It doesn’t mean anything.
Xbox has to deliver the goods.
@ArcadeHeroes Metal Gear was at Sony's show last year. They were the first to reveal it.
Nice xbox show but let's be hones if that conference was a PS conference A LOT of people would be saying:
Again, it was a good show, I liked a lot of games but people act like they would be fine with it when they would be complaining either way.
Come on stop being so bitter! The Xbox showcase was GREAT, probably their best one ever and it’s been years since PlayStation has had a Showcase that good, I’d argue since the PS5 reveal.
@ManifoldCuriosity can't stand hardcore fans of anything.
@Gamer_X And the cycle of Playstation out selling Xbox 3-1 continues, what's a great showcase if it can't do any good for sales.
I loved the Xbox showcase and roughly half the games did nothing for me. It was how it was presented. It felt vital and important and honestly like a resurrection for the vision Team Green has. I’m better that the Nintendo Direct will hit me more in the interest, but it’ll be hard to top how that showcase hit and felt. 2025 is stacked for Xbox too. I’ve been skeptic for a while, but, yeah, Sony needs to step up after that one. Sony’s State of Play felt out of touch whereas the Xbox Showcase was clearly on the pulse of what interests gamers. Xbox might’ve finally figured something out after meandering for years.
@somnambulance I think the Nintendo show will be weaker than the MS one.
Switch is too near end of its life now, the big girls surely have to be for switch 2, so they won’t be shown?
Removed - flaming/arguing
Funniest part for me was the hero shooter XBox showed off (FragPunk) actually looked fun. Compared to Concord I preferred the character designs and the card abilities that are like cheat codes looked unique and pretty cool.
Not sure if it’s coming to PS5 though.
reading a lot of the comments , you can tell people are still living in the past. e3 is dead , not everything needs to be shown off during this time of the year , and sony can show off games any time of the year. people keep calling it the "e3 time of the year" when there is no e3. which goes into the whole internet culture is super adhd these days and need everything spoiled before its announced and they need to know everything right this second.
It wasn't just a good Xbox showcase, it was a great gaming showcase overall, considering that many of these are cross platform. Some of the best showcases in years, with a good variety of games. There were some exclusive bangers for Xbox for sure. Loved South of Midnight, it reminds me of Kena which is one of my favorites as of recent. Indiana Jones, Perfect Dark, Fable - each one of these games looks very promising. Even their live service shooter seems fun.
@UltimateOtaku91 Can you just enjoy games and not bow to a plastic box? I have to ask, do you even play games or just post hate on this site? Stop the blind loyalty and enjoy life and the games!!!!
Sony got absolutely smoked by MS today, without question. MS actually had a pretty decent show. Sony really needs to remember to bring the big hitters at this time of year, like Nintendo and MS typically do.
There just really isn't denying it. That Xbox showcase was leagues better than game fest and Sony's weak state of play.Sony left the bar so low and has done so for nearly this entire generation.
I really hope that they are paying attention. That sometimes gamers just want a little fan service. Even if a game is some time away a tease/or update on what nearly half a dozen studios are working on would have gone a long way.
Some of us just want good games and a little communication. Some of us aren't blindly allegiant to a brand and can praise or criticize when compelled.
Kudos to Ms on this one. This was a great showcase of games done in a pretty spectacular fashion.
Too much gamer rage here. The Xbox showcase was phenomenal, great mixture of AA and AAA games, lots of different genres, big and small and new names, everything on Game Pass which is a great sell. My only complaint is the lack of dates, but don't rush development and let them cook. Look at Perfect Dark - thought the development was failing miserably then suddenly I see the trailer and am a fan. Didn't even like the N64 game.
@get2sammyb While not talking specifically about this article, could I please put in a polite request to quieten down the "this is what the gamers are doing today!" articles? They'll do all sorts of nonsense, sometimes good, often weird. Let them.
60% (80% later)of this showcase you can play on PS5 and cry babies still whining. Wake me up when I can play “hype”…

With Doom, COD, World of Warcraft etc. Microsoft has become the most powerful publisher in the world....
All at the cost of making their console worthless...because yes...Gears and Fable, Indy and Avowed, Perfect Dark will all eventually go multiplat....Why?
Because the Series consoles are flops and Game Pass is stagnant, Microsoft conditioned its players to not buy games and instead play them on GP
Microsoft WANTS to sell games...they saw how well Grounded and Sea of Thieves sold on Playstation and you can bet that Gears and company will follow suit
This has now become a war between Sony and Nintendo with Microsoft being the arms dealer between them
Xbox didn't show games years out! Every single one it showed will be released this year or in 2025. That's a lot different to Sonys strategy which doesn't seem to have any games!
Where's the next Uncharterd? The last Of Us? Nowhere because Sony instructed Naughty Dog to waste time trying to make a live service multiplayer game.
Despite the controversy surrounding Microsoft, it delivered big today.
@S1ayeR74 this is the biggest problem with games these days is misinformation , literally a few days ago naughty dog said that they are working on multiple single player games that have been in development. the multiplayer didn't have any effect on those games.
@UltimateOtaku91 And yet at least 50% of PS4 owners are refusing to upgrade to PS5 because it offers nothing new to them. Xbox showcased 30 games tonight, most of which are CURRENT GEN ONLY! Sony I don’t think has one current gen first party game yet?
You really should criticise Sony here and lay off the koolaide.
@twitchtvpat No, they wasted time on useless remakes too. If they hadn’t done so they would have actually had a new game out by now. I mean The Last Of Us has been remastered what 3 times now? Talk about milking a franchise.
@UltimateOtaku91 You need to stop looking at Microsoft as a competitor to Sony anymore, ALL of those games including Gears, Fable, Indiana Jones, Perfect Dark, Avowed etc will all end up on Playstation down the line
You SHOULD look at the Xbox hardware like the Steamdeck and you SHOULD look at Microsoft as a publisher like EA or Capcom now
You have no reason to be upset because if you're a Playstation gamer you're pretty much going to get nearly every game that isn't a Nintendo product or a PC centric game
In other words STOP CRYING, this show case being incredible is only good for you
@naruball but that's exactly what they did.
@S1ayeR74 Astro Bot, Concord, HellDivers 2, Spider Man 2, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West DLC, Demon Souls Remake and the TLOU remakes are all PS5 only
@UltimateOtaku91 The only good games there are Astro, Returnal and Helldivers 2
Concord looks bad lol and is going to get killed by the actual F2P hero shooters
@Ergoshotz Metacritic disagrees, Demon Souls 92, Ratchet and Clank 88, Spider-Man 2 90, TLOU Remake 90.
So I think XBox needs to be applauded for creating an exciting and well made showcase. It had lots of different experiences, and while there were a lot that weren't exclusives, there were still a lot of third-party games coming day one to Game Pass (even though I've gone off the model, it's still impressive). They have the money to do this - and whether people like to admit it or not, Sony doesn't have the first party studios to actually produce a good tempo of releases (given the time to develop); nor do they have a lot of cash to splash (and when they do, they tend to mis-fire.... and not perform well). Sony isn't the company that many of us loved - and it has become little more than just a store-front nowadays. Yes Sony should learn from what XBox did, but to be honest, I don't think they can repeat it.
The only thing that's sad is that people can't simply give credit where credit is due simply because...what...it didn't come from the company they like?
The last comment I'd make - I really implore game dev studios to stop with the stop-motion/animated visual effect. It might play ok for an interesting trailer, but it seriously annoys the hell out of me (and I include SM in that, which at least was a only a suit/effect that could be turned off).
This was as much a Playstation show as it was Xbox as most of this will be on PS5 sooner or later. And in all fairness, Sony has NEVER done a virtual showcase that was overwhelmingly great. The last truly great presentation I can remember is the 2014 E3 PS4 rollout.
I'll be honest, the only things I liked where Doom: Dark Age, Life is Strange 4, MGS Delta, and Metaphor. All of which are coming to PS5 anyway.
Also, ***** ew!!! What did they do to Joanna!?! I swear these AAA hollywood wannabe devs can't make a decent looking character anymore to save their lives.
@UltimateOtaku91 Astrobot has not been confirmed has it, remakes yeah if a PS3 game is hardly something to shout about. I’ll give you Returnal and Spiderman 2 but neither of those are exclusives anymore, it that that is what I claimed. DLC give me a break that’s pure desperation.
@GADG3Tx87 so let's get this right... you're saying in one breath there's no difference to PS as many of these are multi-platform; and then suggesting it's a sign of weakness that most/a lot of them are day one Game Pass. I don't like the GP model, but hell - you can't argue that it's not an impressive line up for their subscribers.
I have all the major consoles, so I am not a console war guy. I am genuinely surprised this show is getting more than average marks from everyone. It was good no doubt, but it mostly showed things we already knew were coming. Many of which were cross platform anyway. It was a strong show case for games, but not really for Xbox in particular.
I honestly believe that the reaction to the Xbox showcase is more a reaction to how poor the PS and summer fest shows were more than anything else. The Xbox showcase was clearly better than those, but it wasn’t spectacular on its own.
However: it is a great time to love games. There are more interesting games out and coming out than I could play in a lifetime.
@UltimateOtaku91 Sea of Thieves has like a 69 on Metacritic and is topping the charts on Playstation, no one cares lol
Doom Dark Ages looks better than anything Sony has to offer, so does Monster Hunter, Microsoft and Capcom are doing more for your platform than Sony is lol Concord...give me a fking break
I don't care who does the shows, as long as they show me an RPG that I might fancy without exclusivity. Then I'll be happy
My favourites were a few third party games from the show, expedition 33, wu chong, life is strange, assassin's creed, mgs and south of midnight.
Have to laugh at people calling out Playstation fans and people backing Sony on a Playstation website, yet it also does the opposite as the obvious Xbox trolls and Playstation haters have come out the woodwork in droves and its obvious to see who they are. If only these people could go to an actual Xbox website and celebrate this great showcase of theirs 🤔.
Sony will forever be living rent free....
Much much better than Sony’s. But obviously that still comes with the horrific way MS have been shuttering good studios after overspending on ABK. It’s not black and white, but Sony do need to show why it was worth getting a PS5 over an Xbox.
@UltimateOtaku91 There are Playstation fans excited because all of these are going to end up on Playstation which is why I said earlier that this only benefits you
You're flipping over nothing you 🤡
@CrackmanNL "Meanwhile FF7 Rebirth still the highest rated game of the year, Helldivers 2 among the best selling. Concord claps every hero-shooter shown in SGF and Astrobot highly likely to be a GOTY (contender)."
This is nice information if I had stock at Sony but what does this do for a regular fan that just wants a nice E3 level presentation from PlayStation like the other big two are able to do?
Sony is beating MS in every aspect when it comes to console gaming. But MS puts on a better show so Sony needs to step it up? This is the weirdest, most backward 💩 I’ve ever heard lol.
This is pathetic. Kids these days........
@AhmadSumadi The comparison is stupid now, Microsoft is transitioning into a full third party publisher ala Sega
In a few years it'll just be Nintendo and Playstation while Microsoft acts as a arms dealer between them,
@UltimateOtaku91 you know there's an ignore button, right?
@Juanalf Regarding the call out to Hermen
But regarding you as a gamer. It shows you had a stacked first half of games in 2024 and you get 2 first party titles soon including Silent Hill 2 and Wukong being console exclusives for myriad of reasons.
Roadmap and empty promises don't sell consoles, games do.
@Ergoshotz for sure. As a user who’s been on this site for years, I’ve seen people upset about Sony only releasing AAA cinematic games. Now Sony’s releasing an assortment of 3rd party games in many different genres and now other people are upset. Seems just like politics the way you can never please the entire base all the time.
As for me, I like what I like. When nothing is releasing that I wanna play I just the games I like that I’ve yet to play. I know all games won’t be for me and I respect that. Wish more people would do this.
loved the xbox show was personally one of the best ive seen but it makes no difference long term the bulk of casual playstation owners will keep buying playstations to play the same fifa, fortnites and cods over and over no matter how good of show xbox does
Perfect Dark was the only exclusive they showed that interested me in any way.
Gears does not interest me in any way. I feel like I should've been more excited about Fable but wasn't.
Besides those it was all games that will also appear on PS5.
It was a stronger show than State of Play but nothing that would make me think I made a mistake buying a PS5 instead of a Series X.
I said even before this Xbox showcase that as a PS gamer I was more excited about what Xbox will likely bring to PS5 over the next year than what Sony has coming. Now this has made it even more frustrating.
It will be interesting to see if all these big releases end up in more GamePass subs. Because we know Xbox gamers won’t buy anything. 😅
But, as I’ve said before, I’m not starving for content on my PS5. I have a huge backlog and third party has kept good releases coming.
Xbox blew Sony out of the water. Sony thinks it doesn't have to put shows on like this anymore, and Xbox is in a desperate situation to try and not go full third party.
@Th3solution i think that will eventually change when sony shows off what their studios have been working on , it sucks it takes so long to bring these games to the public though.
@twitchtvpat Yeah, most of us know that Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, BluePoint, Housemarque, Bend, Guerilla, and Santa Monica all have projects that would go toe-to-toe with any of these Xbox announcements. But they just aren’t saying anything and I think everything with the Live Service initiative delayed everything and now we’re feeling the effect. So they have chosen to concede 2024 to Xbox, and that’s ok. 2025 has potential to be great.
Let's see Nintendo direct before giving Sony their bronze medal.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Regardless of big games, I just tend to like Switch exclusives most often of all, so, yeah, I expect a light one, but geared more to my taste is all
had they not spent billions on batheda and Activision they wouldn’t have much to show.
Alway fun to welcome back old friends who onuseem to turn up when Xbox has something, anything to shout about. Thankfully that’s not much
Facing a very big precipice of irrelevance, Microsoft did what they had to do and show games. It made their fans happy. I don’t think it will radically change their fortunes as people won’t rush out to buy an Xbox, but I guess they’ll have a bit of an uptick on PC gamepass, then find a drop again because that’s how people use streaming services.
Playstation just doesn’t have any more games ready at the moment, but that doesn’t mean more aren’t coming in 2025. If we’ve seen anything with Astro Bot recently it’s that players would like some variation in the types of games Sony puts out.
I'm thinking that sony wanting to play the waiting game and let everybody show they ass first..I'm sure they have a lot of games to reveal but they playing on they're time not anybody else's
@UltimateOtaku91 brilliantly said!
Soooo when does Sony do a showcase??? They're state of plays are quick catch ups or deep dives been a pattern for awhile now
Xbox nailed it. Fable, Perfect Dark, Doom and Gears it felt like an Xbox 360 era type showcase, which frankly Xbox needed, I am glad I already own a gaming PC as I would have seriously considered grabbing a Series X
what's crazy is that PS5 sells so well, Sony has to just keep doing what its doing currently and it'll still be on top
I think people are forgetting one very important thing.....
Xbox hasn't shown up for years and years, the amount of publishers they bought, it was going to happen at some point.
I'm glad Xbox finally delivered something because each year we all wait and see if Xbox is worth it and every year let down after let down.
Just shows though, that people have very short term memories about these things.
And for Xbox really for its consoles its a little to late in my mind.
But I think a show like this should put PlayStation under pressure.
In my mind if you ain't got anything to show from your own studios then don't show anything at all.
That PlayStation Showcase was an absolute joke and then the state of play was a third party mess.
We are at a time that many publishers have their own shows so if PlayStation pr Xbox have any shows, it should always be about their developers with a sprinkling of third party partnerships.
Not shows which are majority third party with 1 or 2 games.
The problem PlayStation have created is they've taken the whole showing games to early to the extreme and giving us nothing to get hyped about.
They mistake our frustration and think it's because the games aren't coming sooner, when in fact the frustration is we don't know what coming at all, apart from rumours and educated safe predictions.
Think from my own wants and PlayStation fans is a show which just talks and shows snippets from future games.
Like it's E3 season, we should have a vague knowledge of what's coming the following year, even if it's just a title screen or anything.
All we know is astrobot is coming September and that's as far as we get on first party.
I don’t think Showcases matter as much people assume, if I’m honest. Casual audiences, for starters, (who are like the ones everyone wants) aren’t really paying attention to this stuff. And also, I’d say Xbox have had better lshowcases than Sony for the past 3 or 4 years (mainly because they show games as far as two years away and Sony have a clear year out at least policy - even 3 or 6 months for some games). And what difference has it made? The net result is that expectations and delivery is managed better on PlayStation - whereas for all the decent Xbox showcase showings - their games get delayed or are years away too often. Redfall and Forza motorsport all once looked great.
Execution is where Xbox fall down, and that is where Sony excel.
My opinion is Microsoft had a good selection of games to show did get me a little excited which is something Sony hasn't done for a while. One of the negatives was that there was not a lot of gameplay in a lot of the trailers which Sony is usually better at it. Sony's problem is they are being so tight lipped about everything I think a lot of people would be a lot happier if Sony had trailers and announcements for a couple games that are further out. We don't need to know every game they are making but one or two would go a long way to build a little bit of hype.
I didn't watch either presentation as a whole, I just watch the trailers separately, so I might have missed some part of what made this so great for people. But I thought both were decent offerings.
To be honest neither had a huge amount for me, but I thought both had decent variety and a few interesting things. Doom and South of Midnight caught my attention in Xbox. But Doom is cross platform anyway. And Astrobot is the game I'm most excited for for out of anything. So personally, they balance out.
If I had my own way though Sony would have announced a new Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank, and Xbox would be bringing back Jet Force Gemini and Banjo Kazooie. But I'm not going to start a petition about it.
PS gamers got exactly what they wanted. They cried saying they don’t like early announcements and previews, so, Sony has went quiet.
I love previews, give me a roadmap that’s five years long.
This is how it's always been and how I like it.
Sony - under promise and over deliver.
MS - over promise and under deliver.
MS need the hype, Sony doesn't as it's already dominant and it's brand prestige allows it some faith that it's exclusives will be very good.
You (the public) only want more announcements so you can feel more excited and have more to talk about which is fair enough as present and future customers. But please don't be greedy.
After years of using Push Square I've created an account solely to comment on this article..
State of Plays have never been good, and I'll die on that hill. The shift to a soulless stream with a random voice introducing games (the majority of which are extremely niche) lacks character and fails to build excitement.
I'd much rather Sony just went back to how they used to handle announcements, not hearing anything most of the year and just having one or two events as proper showcases (one for western titles, and one for those from eastern partners). That way fans know what to tune into for their own tastes.
Whilst I appreciate the days of a proper stage show are long gone, State of Plays only ever contain one 'big game' if we're lucky, with everything else acting as filler.
Save them up and put on a proper show. Bring back interviews with the developers, and make the company feel part of the community again.
I feel like every year Xbox has a strong show showing tons of stuff and every year after that barely anything comes out on Xbox.
I don't need empty showcase filled with 3rd parties and games that are years away.
Sony recent State of Play wasn't great either, that's for sure.
Don't worry PlayStation fans. If Sony won't give you good games then "Good Guy Phil" will do it with Doom The Dark Ages.
Can’t you blame them the PlayStation CEO do ***** job as well Dutch person who be with PlayStation 3rd party since 2019 doing ***** job I want him fired the clown
Claiming Astro Bot cleared anything the Xbox showcase showed is a coping mechanism that is not good for anyones physical or mental state.
Stop it. Get some help.
@OM1993 Rofl. People are really claiming that?
The Microsoft show has been 90% the same for the last 3 or 4. It’s the same games they have been saying are coming for about 2 years, only difference is starfield came out so now gears of war is in its place and that game is not coming out for almost 5 years I bet.
@Katsuhono fable and avowed have been in a few of them now and we still are no closer to finishing out when we get to play them. It’s one of Xbox is major problems. You show somebody Avowed trailers for five years. They’re gonna get excited and there is nothing they could possibly ever make that is going to back up five years of waiting in hype so it comes out and it’s redfall, Halo infinite could never possibly live up to that height now it’s like the black sheep of the halo franchise, Starfield could never live up to that hype now it’s the black sheep of the Bethesda lineup, and it’s coming to continue that way as long as Xbox operates the way they currently do
The fact that we don't have official word on what the PS5 Pro is or what it does is insane.
Sony have shied away recently from showing any games that are a while out from release as they did in previous years. Astro Bot has only been recently revealed and it's out in a few months.
I think it's the right move but it's backfiring on them because of lack of communication in general. Xbox in contrast are being very vocal right now.
They are lacking a mouthpiece is the problem. Shu is in a different role now and they never really outright replaced Shawn Layden or Adam Boyes.
They need someone in place who can be out there being vocal with fans.
@AdolBannings-Laylee Are you sure about that? Because only repeated games from last year's showcase were South of Midnight, Avowed, Fable and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Not counting GaaS updates of course.
Call of Duty, Doom, State of Decay 3, Age of Mythology, Perfect Dark, Gears and Indiana Jones were not at last year's showcase(and that's just first-party stuff). Not to mention third-party stuff where the only repeated game that I can remember was Flintlock.
But I guess that when you change up 90% of games in your showcase it is almost same showcase than last year /s
Err yeah. Please Sony, give us a showcase that focuses on 90% games we already know are coming since 2020, give barely an update with the same trailer from last year (Fable and Avowed) or another CG trailer 4 years later (State of Decay 3).
Oh and make sure to give no release dates for practically everything shown too or the whole show might as well have been an email that games are still coming. Yeah, take notes Sony lol.
Seriously guys, LIKE EVERY YEAR after the Xbox showcase, you will all admit in a month's time, when you come off that placebo sugar pill, that it wasn't really that significant of a showcase.
Phil said 2 years ago at their last E3 conference in 2020, "everything shown here today will be out before June next year" and admit it, that's all you remember from that showcase.
Nobody likes to bring up the fact that Starfield and Forza 8 were at the next year showcase AND Gamescom because of the constant development problems Xbox has this gen.
But of course, the Xbox E3 2022 showcase was "lit" and the "best showcase that year" like it is for certain folk every year.
I haven't watched an Xbox showcase live since the Kinect E3 2010 and the worst games console reveal of all time, the Xbone. I refreshed the Xbox youtube channel late last night and wasn't overly impressed by any of the games shown or announced or the lack of information.
I thought the Xbox showcase and the Summer Games Fest were abysmal. Summer Games Fest only had 2 games I have any interest in, Xbox had 1 (Dragon Age) but even that trailer was a huge disappointment.
Xbox really showed how to do a showcase, one xbox studio announcement after another which made the recent state of play look absolutely rubbish (other than Astrobot).
I’m actually not too ecstatic over Xbox announcements compared to Sony because usually Sony’s PC ports come to steam, with some rare exceptions and not require a third party account (again, usually), while Xbox’s PC ports either head to the Microsoft store or come to steam requiring a third party account. Or be 100 gigs (although Sony is guilty of that too). I have my ps4 and Xbox series but I try to keep them for physical gaming since downloading 150 gigs games tends to eat up a lot of my wifi or mobile data. I also to stick to one steam, so I sealed my other systems so they don’t collect dust. For now I’m using steam deck.
To be honest, I’m not bothered by what they show so long the games are fun in the end. I tend to check news round-ups anyways because the actual live streams happen around 2 or 3 am my time zone.
Even then, at the end of the day, retro gaming is still my jam. Mainly ps2 (I plan to re-purchase a new ps2). But indie announcements, such as the new momodora game that just came out, tend to be awesome. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll get another indivisible? Fingers crossed!
@RBMango Xbox is great at showing while PlayStation is good at delivering
Regardless of the fact that we have already had incredible achievements from the PlayStation some people or gamers prestige and media hype are more interesting than what the PS5 gave us in the first two years alone, which are games that can stand freely side by side with current Renders and Scripted recorded Gameplays. We had Amazing Expirience amazing fun and we still do. From my knowledge or let's say my personal opinion is that PlayStation achieved impossible with PS4 and everything that was announced as next gen PS5 give us and now we can be objective or expect more which is legit but to say that PS5 didn't deliver is not true and we all know that as with previous generation's we get the best in the Last two to three years before the end of the generation and beyond with Cross Gen. Games that are Amazing till this day. There's nothing to be worried about when it's comes to PlayStation and future of PlayStation.
I’m glad Sony is getting pushback from people about their silence. I’m 38yo and a near-lifetime PlayStation fan, but in the past several years, I’ve never been a more bored PlayStation fan. There’s just been very little hype and only a handful of games that I have truly loved. Thank goodness for Returnal.
