Like a bolt out of the blue, Square Enix has released the original Octopath Traveler on PS5 and PS4, and it's available now. The critically acclaimed JRPG was originally exclusive to Switch, released some six years ago, and just yesterday, we learned it was rated for release in Taiwan. Now, it seems Square Enix has decided to hit the big, red "launch" button with minimal fanfare.
Spotted by the ever-reliable Wario64 on Twitter, Octopath Traveler is now rolling out on PSN. It's already available in the US (and Australia, we can confirm) and will cost $60USD or your local equivalent, although there is a discount for PS Plus members. Square Enix has since made things official and is even offering a bundled pack of both games if you're interested. In addition, Octopath Traveler II has received an update, adding a new battle mode that lets players take on new challenges, such as fighting the cast of the first game.
Are you surprised to see Octopath Traveler arrive on PS5 and PS4? Will you be picking up the excellent JRPG on PlayStation? Let us know in the comments section below.

Physical copy?
i don't understand why put it on game pass and not also ps+ it is an older game and could get people into buying the 2nd one , either way i'm glad its finally on playstation.
glad it got released officially, but $60USD? come on now! this is a 6-year old game. curious if this will get a physical release... hopefully it won't be an ultra limited release on the s-e store but not holding my breath.
Square enix marketing is so poor. Like why wouldnt you just say hey sony throw it in your state of play and then xbox put this in your showcase for the 2nd one
@twitchtvpat probably because Sony didn't offer them money or square was asking too much for a 6 year old game (they already are, 60 for this game is crazy).
Oh, I didn't expect it to come out so soon. That's cool.
I’ll stick to my OG copy on Switch. No physical release and asking full price are a double whammy for me.
I’m happy more folks will get to play it, though!
It’s actually $39.59 if you have PS+.
They don't need to spend to promote, when It's free if you do it for them.
@awp69 Yeah. I see a lot of people bothered by the full price, but if they don’t have PS Plus I’m sure it’ll go on sale in other ways in the future (just like OTII does pretty regularly).
@GymratAmarillo i guess its 40$ with ps+ which is a good deal , idk how much the bundle is for both games. i still think they could have made more money if people haven't bought the 2nd game yet and played this , they could have wanted to play the 2nd game.
It’s strange — the first Octopath Traveler bored me so much, I actually fell asleep multiple times playing it. However, the second game is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. Perhaps I’ll give this one another chance, but I don’t think I’ll pay $60.00 for it.
Man would love the Bravely series to be updated and bought over to Playstation
Square Enix being Square Enix on lack of promo...but so glad it's there.
Also wouldn't mind seeing Triangle Strategy at some point.
Interesting, for some reason I decided to start Octopath Traveler II just 2 days ago, I bought the physical edition last year during Black Friday when it was super cheap. So far so good, the game is beautiful and captivating. I like that it is still possible to revisit this old school genre and still be creative in terms of graphics and gameplay. No idea about the 1, I read it was not as good as the 2.
@twitchtvpat Because Square knows that people will actually buy the game on Playstation.
£50 for a 6 year old port, a port that was pretty much free for xbox gamers for the first year and also gone back into gamepass today, no thanks Square Enix 😂.
And once again SE does the dumbest crap like this. No fanfare or anything. Seriously hate how SE handles some of their games.
If they'd pair a physical copy with the full art book and soundtrack, I'd be willing to pay 60€, but digital... nay
@twitchtvpat because Xbox people refuse to buy games
@scoobdoo so original!
@UltimateOtaku91 not free though gamepass is good value but deffo not free🤣
@ManifoldCuriosity
I agree. I think games like this definitely give you your money’s worth. If it works out around a $ per hour of gameplay (or even less) it’s surely worth it.
I was really looking forward to playing this when it originally launched, but I don’t like the narrative structure. I played 2 on release but fell off when I was introduced to the 5th character. Something about playing the lengthy intro vignettes over and over became tiresome.
I found the first one to be an incredibly boring game, with vapid characters and a complete lack of narrative cohesion. I still want to give the second game a chance, as everyone keeps saying how much better it is, but the whole "8 characters with their own stories" really doesn't work for me.
That's the SE rigorous multiplat strategy. If they want to gain more money, they should reduce the price. Isn't 60 too much?
Dang. SE released the first game for PS4/5 just like that huh? No marketing at all + $60 (a discount if you have PS+).
I wonder if SE learn some lesson that they need to fix their marketing. Even if Octopath Traveler 3 release day 1 on all platforms, if their marketing is garbage like this then i doubt it could sell more than FF XVI or Rebirth.
@Ainu20 The second games has connection between 8 characters. At some point, you will have "Crossed Path" chapters where some characters finish a mission together. And when all individual stories completed, there will be an epilogue with all characters fighting the same villain.
That was fast.im still playing the amazing octopath traveler 2.im on osvald story.word up son
Dunno what's going on with the pricing. The bundle of both 1 and 2 is £59.99 here in the UK, which seems fair to me. Just 1 on its own is £49.99 (without the current PS+ discount) which seems high.
@twitchtvpat
Because Microsoft backed themselves into a corner with Game Pass. Increasingly, you'll see some developers not bring their titles to Xbox unless they get paid to do so (like with Game Pass) since they know they don't sell many copies. It certainly seems like that is the case with Square-Enix.
I wanna buy it again, but not right now. Maybe in a year or two.
This game reminded me how much I love a good turn based RPG. I played the poop out of it and enjoyed it thoroughly. If we want more of these games, snap them up!
@twitchtvpat Simple answer: Microsoft paid for it, Sony didn't.
@The_Wailing_Doom There’s been plenty of other SE titles come to Xbox without being on GamePass. Don’t make up crap you don’t know.
And I’m betting you’ll see a lot more now that SE has agreed to do multiplatform. I’m betting FF 7 and 16 will come to Xbox and not be on GamePass.
Already have both on Switch, and better frame rates definitely aren't getting me to pay $60 to double-dip for just one of them. Both games are great, don't get me wrong...but seriously, $60?!
EDIT: I guess the bundle for both is $75, which is....better, but still too much IMO, and only works if you didn't already buy II (which is also $60 on its own).
I think I'll just be buying the second game.
I wanted to buy this one when it originally came out but after playing the second one and hearing how inferior the first one is compared to the second I don't think I will.
I'm sticking to my Switch copy for now.
Anyway, I'm hoping that Square would also release their Bravely games to modern platforms, especially the 1st Bravely Default on the 3DS.
Sweet. Hopefully people that missed it will dive in. Hoping for a physical copy too.
