Metal Slug Tactics is slated to launch on PS5 and PS4 in 2024, and the shift from sidescrolling shmup action to tense, turn-based tactics seems like a genuinely inspired one. While we wait for a more concrete release date, Paris-based publisher Dotemu has put together a lovely little retrospective, which should help kill a little bit of time.
The short documentary looks at the foundation of legendary Japanese video game developer and publisher SNK and the origins of the Metal Slug franchise. Speaking to some of the series' original developers, Dotemu gets their take on the work of French developer Leikir Studio, which was tasked with transforming this classic IP into something more pixelated, slower-paced, and presented from an isometric perspective.

One of the games I'm most excited about. I love tactics and I love Metal Slug.
Seeing Masato Horiuchi sensei in the flesh, playing "Kiss in The Dark" really made my day.😊
