RPGs often feature a morality system, allowing players to dictate how their chosen character will interact with a given game world, ranging from relatively black-and-white to endlessly crushing, grimdark grey (we're looking squarely at you, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader). How BioWare's upcoming Dragon Age: The Veilguard will deal with morality remains to be seen, but it sounds like there are some lines the studio is unwilling to cross.
Spotted by GamesRadar+, The Veilguard lead writer and narrative designer Patrick Weekes responded to a fan inquiry on the rarely-mentioned X alternative, Blue Sky, about whether class specializations, such as Dragon Age 2's Blood Mage, might put in an appearance. Weekes said it's a "never say never situation".
Blood magic, specifically, seems to be a step too far in this setting, which makes us wonder exactly what will and won't be on the table in terms of player choice: "Blood magic is unlikely because we've shifted it from a power boost to really being the key to a lot of nasty stuff we aren't interested in having heroes do... After seeing it used as a required part of mind control and demon binding in DA2 and DAI, it's just not a road we want the hero to walk right now."
