It’s nothing new in the games industry, but it’s probably something you’re going to see a lot more: an eye-watering 2.2 million people coughed up $99.99 to purchase EA Sports College Football 25’s Deluxe Edition, which launched three days early, on 16th July. The game is available for everyone from today, 19th July.
Of course, we should probably stop calling this Early Access, because it’s not really. The launch date for EA Sports College Football 25, regardless of what the executives tell you, was 16th July – it’s just peasants purchasing the standard edition have been forced to wait an additional three days. You’re going to see more and more publishers adopt this strategy moving forwards.
It should be noted that the Deluxe Edition does come with some additional in-game content on top of the earlier release date, so there’s inherent value there – but clearly the push for $69.99 games hasn’t been enough, and publishers are finding crafty ways to drive those prices higher. We’re sure Rockstar is going to make a killing when it inevitably follows the same strategy for GTA 6 next year.
Back on topic, though, the enthusiasm for EA Sports College Football 25 is incredible, and it tagged on another 600,000 players prior to its official launch through subscription EA Play. These are staggering numbers, and you’re probably going to see the game absolutely explode over the weekend. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella said this “may indeed be the mass market breakout hit this console gen really needs”.
The interesting thing about this game is that, while these numbers are extraordinary, its success is likely to be centralised in a single country. While American football has gained in popularity throughout Europe over the past decade, resulting in regular competitive games in London and Munich, the fascination predominantly revolves around the NFL as opposed to the college leagues.

you can thank social media for that , plus ncaa been missing since 2013
@Malaise true , most of games aren’t even worth $60 these days
No offense intended to anyone, but spending an extra $30 essentially just to play 3 days early is a genius way to help idiots part with their money. I'll never understand the mentality of "OMG, I can play 72 hours earlier than everyone else? That makes me feel important! Of course I'll pay an additional amount equal to nearly 45% of the regular price!" Phrased that like it sounds ridiculous.
I must declare, I think people who spend thier money in a way that I wouldn't are idiots.
@tangyzesty usually these editions include the money’s worth in digital currency and items. For people who are planning on playing the “gambling” modes anyway it’s a no brainer to get the deluxe/ultimate pack.
You could argue that those modes are for idiots, but so are most of life’s vices. I’d rather buy a pack of FUT cards than a pack of cigarettes, to each their own
@tangyzesty Yeah, as another poster mentioned, you do get extra in-game content.
Wasn't the last NCAA game $59.99? That's $81.85 in buying power in 2024. So it's really $20 more for early access than the game was in 2014. And if you wait to buy on release, its roughly the same price as it was in 2014. I don't think gaming is actually more expensive now than it was then. Especially not all time. Madden on SNES was $59.99 in 1996, or $122.07 now. Plus, the existence of sales and second hand market being much larger than back then it seems that gaming as a hobby is cheaper now than when I started playing games. It was also such a gamble back then because you had no way to really see gameplay.
It's 2024? Lol
Is that $220 Million? On Deluxe preorders? I don’t know how much it costs to make a yearly football game but I’m going to assume that should cover it.
So, has EA announced they’re firing the people who made it b/c it hasn’t lived up to their expectations?
@tangyzesty who cares that it comes with Ultimate team currency for that value, and 3 days access is just extra bonus to push for that payment. But lets make drama about things. You don't play such games and you don't even bother to investigate what and why, but easily are here to be one of those who moan about gaming in nowadays.
Personally, this doesn't really bother me much. If someone REALLY wants to play 3 days early and are willing to pay the price who am I to do l stop them? It's their money after all.
Do I see the value in doing this myself? No, but you can't blame publishers for doing this when clearly it works.
This is why i'm not gonna fully blame gaming companies for raising prices for their games when there's millions of gamers who don't mind spending 100 bones for a sport game. sigh...
I’ll give this a try when it hits EAplay in 9months or so, I’m not a big nfl fan but have enjoyed the odd bit of madden over the years
This will be the normal base price sooner than you think.
@LowDefAl Honestly I don't play sports games, or even really watch sports, but I am sure plenty of die-hard football fans feel the same about anime games or fortnite etc. Just a really weird statement for you to make. I have no idea why people play certain games but calling an entire fanbase idiots just has no place in an enthusiast website that is for many types of enthusiasts. All it does is turn the comments section into the lowest common denominator of discourse.
@LowDefAl I agree they have a captive audience, but are we all not captive to something? I always pay extra to sit close at a concert I want to see, when realistically I can save $100 and get the same show twenty feet away. I understand your point but its hard when you are judging perceived value. People have been waiting ten years for this game, and in the U.S. people make a huge deal out of just going to a game, it's like a mini-World Cup every Saturday during the season. I guess I just understand that if this is one of a couple games you are going to buy all year and you get to play it early you don't mind paying more whether its logical or not. Shoot I used to waste my time lining up to get a game at midnight at GameStop and play it for like an hour before bed, definitely would have been more logical to pick it up in the morning.
Also, no worries about the tone of the first comment I totally get it, I just don't want PushSquare comments to become IGN comments 🤣 because that will be the end of me coming here
@PuppetMaster @Malaise @tangyzesty
I refer to this as the Streamer/Influencer tax. The pressure to ensure theirs is the freshest content, makes them feel compelled to participate in these early access schemes.
What’s funny is that you could buy a month of EA Play for far less and play it early for 10 hours then get the game at launch. I’ve been playing the trial via EA Play / GamePass. Fun game so far. But the trial will probably last me until the price drops.
Some of you do not understand exactly how much Americans love college football plus the fact that this game has not released in many years. College football fans are some of the most passionate fan bases. The buzz around this game in the US was/is huge. If they are willing to pay for it, so be it. I am a huge college football fan with Penn State being my favorite team. The stadium holds 107,000 people and is one of the most fun experiences you could have at any sporting event. With all of that being said, there is no way in hell I personally would pay $100 for any game (outside of Elden Ring). I will wait for a sale or play on EA play next year.
Don't know what to tell you, Sammy, but it's currently sitting behind only FC24 and FC25 on the PS App digital store in the UK too 😱😱
@MikeOrator Maybe other games, but not this one.
@Ravix Well I've just checked the PS app and I'm in the UK but it is sitting at 40th for me.
Edit: I guess you're looking at the top 10 games in your country list and I was looking at the best selling preorders.
I wonder why there's such a discrepancy between the two.
Why do people get so angry towards these things? Its wild.
I got early access but I paid the for the month of EA play which gave a 10% discount on the standard edition + a 10 hour early access trial. I don't play much during the week but still got to get a jump and experience it early. In the end spent the same amount without having to buy a deluxe/ultimate edition.
'Circana analyst Mat Piscatella said this “may indeed be the mass market breakout hit this console gen really needs”'
How American levels of out of touch must you be to make a statement like that?
He does know that a whole world that doesn't give a damn about college football exists out of the US, right?
@MrMagic I mean, I guess because it's no longer a pre order, as it's been out since the 15th so maybe fell down that list.
It will be interesting to see the actual UK sales performance, as it surprised me that it was on there when I was browsing, tbh. I know it is incredibly popular in the States, almost a religion when you throw betting in to the mix 😅 which is something people don't seem to understand over here, maybe because it's "college sport" and in Europe that just doesn't translate. But I genuinely didn't think anyone in the UK would have a vested interest in any NCAA stuff, beyond very niche hard-core followers.
@Ravix Yeah with the article talking about early access I didn't realise it was out yet so yeah you're probably right and that's it also it probably got a decent amount of day 1 £70 buyers so that has something to do with its top 10 in the country ranking.
GTA 6 will 100% do something similar and sell tens of millions of copies regardless
Boy, I have a feeling I know where this is going to lead in the future.
If I see a game that has a delayed release for standard purchases, I'm not going to buy that game. Even if it's a franchise I love. I'll wait for a sale and then buy it. I'm not in a rush to play anything new. I have a lot of games I can play that I haven't finished yet.
@Carck when put like that, it makes sense, and it's definitely better than cigarettes lol
Super excited but not for that much. Even $70 is too much for me.
I can only consider this disingenuous if the game has a competitive multiplayer aspect, because then it’s basically giving people a 3-day head start. Not sure if that’s a big deal though as I play neither sports games or multiplayer games.
I guess we can only wait and see if more publishers decide to follow this.
Consumers are their own worst enemy. <sigh>
Now EA tested the waters after all these years have seen the results and how every editing will follow the Madden series the same game every year with a number increase from now on but with stupid higher prices
I’m in U.K. and bought it. The key to this story is a bit more than just stupid people over paying. We haven’t had a college football game in ten years. Those number won’t be as high for Madden or College football next year.
@awp69 I did the ten hours in two days. So I paid for MVP version. The madden and College football - it’s 125.99 and with cheap credit got it down to £55 each game. Which was more palatable. And I got early access plus all the extras
@nomither6 this is the real story. There hasn’t been a game in ten years. It’s big news.
@tangyzesty I don't think it's fair to say people who spend their money differently than you do are idiots. Not everyone has the same amount of money. I spent the extra $30 to play it early and I didn't think twice about. It's just $30 lol.
Because this game hasn't been out for 11 years, I can understand people wanting it badly.
If this was just another year iteration, I don't think it's worth it.
Let's not forget you get in-game bonus items as well. So they're not just paying for 3-day early access, as some may think.
I almost paid the extra money, but then I decided I could wait the three days. I waited 11 years. Three more days won't kill me.
Every year people complain these are low effort cashgrabs and then they pay €/$30 for 3 days early access no wonder EA doesn't care what they release. And i agree with most people gamers are stupid and deserve to get ripped off.
@Stocksy It's still $126 that went to their pocket credit or not it's insane. No wonder they keep going on and on with lower effort and the same things with even more monetization every year.
@get2sammyb In the end what are the extras some garbage that will be useless next year.
@Flaming_Kaiser £55 quid a game is not excessive. That’s what I paid. I’ve waited ten years for this game. No regrets. I’m sure you indulge in plenty of bad practises for games you like. It’s always worse when it’s EA.
