Evo is going to be a truly massive gathering this year, having set a new record for registered players. But what do the numbers look like when you break them down by game? The PlayStation-backed event has revealed the figures for each tournament, and we're looking at some of the biggest competitions in Evo history.
Street Fighter 6 has once again attracted the most entrants. A whopping 5,265 players will battle it out with Ryu and the gang, and it'll actually be the second-largest Evo tournament ever — bettered only by Street Fighter 6's debut at Evo 2023.
Tekken 8 isn't too far behind, boasting an incredibly impressive 4,646 entrants. This is officially the biggest Tekken tournament in series history, more than doubling the previous Evo record that was set by Tekken 7 back in 2019. That's some serious growth.
Here are the player numbers for all of Evo 2024's main games:
- Street Fighter 6 - 5,265
- Tekken 8 - 4,646
- Guilty Gear Strive - 2,058
- Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising - 1,377
- Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike - 1,101
- Under Night In-Birth 2 Sys:Celes - 785
- Mortal Kombat 1 - 645
- King of Fighters XV - 375
Evo 2024 begins on Friday the 19th July and covers the whole weekend. But will you be keeping up these absolutely huge tournaments? Pray for the tournament organisers in the comments section below.

645 players. That is a low number for Mortal Kombat 1.
It's good to see Guilty Gear Strive up there in third since that is considered a niche fighting series. Tekken is my favorite fighting series, personally, but I end up playing Mortal Kombat and Injustice most of all just because that is what my friends like most.
It's wild to me Sony owns Evo, but has no fighting game(s) of its own.
I genuinely love watching competitive Tekken and Street Figther so I'm hyped for Evo. Will definitely watch Strive's matches as well, love my some Guilty Gear.
I do miss Smash at Evo cause competitive Smash is just as entertaining as Tekken and Streets for me.
@The_Wailing_Doom it's wild but that doesn't mean that they aren't taking anything from it. CEO, Kombo breaker, Kumite, and of course the Esports World Cup just to name a few are using ps5 and inzone because Sony can give them good prices or being partner of their events. Also if Capcom was already one of their biggest partners owning the second house of SF just made the relationship stronger, you can say the same about Warner and Bandai.
EVO is probably one of the best investments Sony has made in the last decade, entering the Esports world really solidified the ps5 as the system to run tournaments. Obviously top players still want pc but Sony has done great selling equipment to the biggest tournaments at good price and being partner with other hype tournaments like those organized by Red Bull.
Business is all about timing and after years of organizing their technology festival every year the saudi decided to organize the first Esports World Cup and Sony is the biggest partner of the event, oil money was already involved at EVO Japan this year when one of the biggest esports Saudi brand was a partner. So yeah I think EVO acquisition has been a huge W. Also it's another opportunity to make the relationship with Disney stronger because Disney was another new partner at EVO Japan with Disney+.
I love watching Street Fighter matches. So definitely looking forward to this.
@Stevemalkpus Yea this is really surprising but I think it speaks to the disappointment about MK1
Shocking representation for MK1.
It really says something.
I wonder of MvC infinite would get more. 😅
Netherrealm is in a really tricky position with MK. If they want the game to be taken seriously within the FGC they need to completely overhaul the stiff gameplay... but then they risk losing the massive casual audience who've made it the highest selling fighting game franchise.
And I don't think it's purely due to Japanese game elitism because Killer Instinct was well regarded in the FGC, but that game had the inverse problem of being a complete sales flop largely due to the platform it was stuck on.
This is amazing. Last year EVO has 9K players but now it has more than 10K! But i hope they stream a lot of matches unlike this year EVO Japan.
I wonder if 3rd Strike top 8 will be dominated by Chun and Yun again...
@GymratAmarillo I need to give credit to anyone from Sony who suggested they should buy EVO.
After Mr Wizard scandal back in 2020, no one wants to sponsor or associate with EVO anymore. Covid also a nailed in the coffin for EVO because EVO is an offline event. But the person who suggested they should buy and revive EVO and make it bigger than ever not just has big balls but also a genius.
@The_Wailing_Doom Join the club mate, I've beaten that drum for ages now along with wanting PlayStation AllStars back.
I really gotta make it to an EVO live one of these days. Maybe next year!
i really don’t get how 3rd strike is more relevant than street fighter 4, i really don’t
@truerbluer they need to go back to their roots with mk but they never will.
@Stevemalkpus good
@nomither6 3rd Strike is that game that attracted a lot of people to play fighting games after they watched EVO Moment 37.
But they picked 3rd Strike over SF 4 because this year is 3rd Strike 25th Anniversary. It's the same like last year when they put UMvC 3 as one of the main game.
Maybe next year they will get SF 4 or any classic games. We just needs to wait and see...
@PuppetMaster oh, that makes sense. i wouldn’t be surprised if that evo moment is a big reason why SF3 is so praised too
