You won’t extract a whole lot from this teaser trailer for Amazon Prime’s television adaptation of Like a Dragon: Yakuza, but we suppose it sets the scene. The 70-second clip shows protagonist Kazuma Kiryu getting his trademark ink before cutting to a couple of shots of seedy Shinjuku ward Kabukicho, which of course will be presented as the fictional district of Kamurocho here.
There are a couple of fleeting shots of ripped topless men flexing their pecks, and we also see a huge pile of Japanese yen. However, until we see Kiryu interacting with a group of grown men wearing nothing but nappies, we’re going to complain this isn’t authentic.

LET’S GO HOMOEROTICISM
Looks quite badass!
The make-or-break factor here will be whether or not Kiryu's actor can deliver a performance that feels true to the character.
I'm not a big fan of live action adaptations generally speaking, but there is potential for some fun times here. Plus, unlike other media, Like a Dragon's pretty close to reality already.
Looks good from the teaser but it's Prime. Both the Halo series and the LOTR series are from Prime and they're considered by most to be bad so I am wondering if this will follow suit.
Also the Yakuza fanbase has become absolutely unhinged and toxic in recent years. I imagine if it follows Yakuza mainly just by the main story, there's going to be people crying because their favourite substory isn't included, Kiryu didn't faceplant some woman's panties (optional player choice in Kiwami 2), Kiryu didn't spend a week in Carabet clubs hooking up with hostesses (I can see it now: "where is Rei?!"), Kiryu didn't get sexually assaulted by an old woman, Majima didn't do the funny meme thing or the show didn't confirm their gay ship fanfiction of two straight characters etc etc.
Either way, I don't think I'll enjoy the reactions to the show whether it's good or bad because these people will end up upset regardless I think.
@TruestoryYep fallout was prime and was good but can agree with you about the other shows. I'm keen as for this, favourite IP.
I know its just a teaser but GOOD GOD IM HYPED!
I’m not expecting a performance from the actor playing Kiryu to be as good as the real thing but I hope he resembles him just a little in his personality. Other than that, I think the show looks great.
@TruestoryYep I don't know if this is an international thing or not, but wasn't the Halo series from Paramount+ and produced by Showtime?
Ok that actually looks good. And I don't like TV shows cats based on games.... But... No Koroda
I can't find many recogniseable scene from the trailer outside Kiryu dragon tats and Kamurocho red gate that looks similar from the game.
But it looks okay i guess? I'm personally not hype nor have any expectations for the show.
@TruestoryYep Halo was Paramount Plus, fyi.
@PuppetMaster funny enough, this isn’t their first crack at a tv show, Kurohyou had one as well as a manga. Didn’t hear much about it though cuz it’s like a niche within a niche within a niche. People who actually seen it are an endangered species!
God I'd at least like to catch up with some of the games 1st before i watch this. I've only finished 0...
@Yousef- I didn't know Kurohyou had a tv show. But i did watched Yakuza live act movie directed by Takashi Miike. It was kinda decent i guess, although it wasn't a 1:1 adaptation of the 1st game.
It definitely looks like it has captured the essence of the games. I have my fingers and toes crossed for another great video game adaptation after Fallout and The Last of Us.
@TruestoryYep
Halo was Paramount, not Prime. Maybe it is available on Prime in whatever country you are in but Amazon did not make it.
@HotGoomba Right, In India Halo is not on Prime. It never was. It’s on another service which streams Paramount+ and others.
Still believe that an anime series could of handled the blend of serious drama and off the rails silliness better, but I'm still very excited to see how this turns out.
Kind of reminds me of the Tokyo Vice intro
All ive got to say is there better be a sub story where your chasing someone down for using a drone to steal panties off washing lines.
Those that know, know.
Oh god I’m in love, please keep the ridiculous side storylines alongside as well. ❤️❤️
if its good its going to sell alot of copies of the games. like fallout did
Well it can’t be worse than the original movie so…
TV and movie have been running out of ideas since the late 00’s. It’s about time video games we’re respected more by the industry considering they are waaaay more popular 😎
@trev666 "if its good its going to sell alot of copies of the games. like fallout did"
Hopefully. They deserve to sell more than they do.
They are starting with yakuza 0. Interesting.
@Nem No, it will cover Yakuza 1.
Don’t like the games, but I think this could be really good! Will go in fresh not knowing the game plot etc so will be good to see if it holds up on its own without needing background info to be good.
As a more recent fan of the franchise (playing Y4 now) I really want to watch it. The Like a Dragon franchise has one of the best narratives in gaming, so I'm confident the TV show will deliver too.
I can’t see how this can’t be good. The main plots have always been fairly good, so surely they can’t mess this up.
I saw something on different site about the developer hoping it will measure up to expectations and then it turns out it'll be all good and sounded wholesome.
@tameshiyaku Agree with you there. Somehow I don't see there being much silliness and humor in this live action adaption. We'll see.
I'm not much of a series watcher, but this looks good
@freddquadros I saw Kuze and the champagne scene in the trailer though. So it might be the beginning of the show or a flash back.
Look at 0.44 minutes. It's Kuze. You can tell by the tatoo.
@Nem They can use the character or bring a earlier flashback, but the show is adapting Y1. It was stated in the press release. It will feature Kiryu in2 timelines: the times he got to prison, and when he was released.
@freddquadros Ok, but Kuze is part of yakuza 0 and never showed up in yakuza 1. So, they will at least use elements of it.
@Nem Yeah, and that's a good thing, the adaptation will be more authentic because it takes elements from all the canon.
