PlayStation will officially return to the Tokyo Games Show this year after being announced as part of the 731 company-strong list of exhibitors for the event. This is said to be the most exhibitors the Japanese expo has ever had, with a total of 3,190 booths showcasing the latest games and accessories both within Japan and overseas.
The last time Sony had a presence at TGS, it signed up for three days of livestreaming focusing on various PS4 titles releasing around the time. The biggest was a Death Stranding demo, which was complemented by in-depth looks at other games such as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Nioh 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon. It hasn't announced any plans for 2024 yet besides the fact it'll be there at the show.
With strong and persistent rumours claiming Sony still has a PS5 Pro model set to launch later in the year, an unveiling around TGS may be on the cards. When the PS4 Pro was revealed, it was part of a separate, standalone event designed to show off the upgraded console and what it can do for upcoming titles. The show takes place from the 26th until 29th September 2024.
It seems likely Sony will have Astro Bot and LEGO Horizon Adventures playable on the showfloor, but what else might it be bringing? Speculate away in the comments below.

Can only mean one thing. Bloodborne is back baby 😂
Hopefully this means under new management there will at least be some return to more japanese centric games being featured. The closure of playstaing japan studios still hurts.
Also if they're returning to TGS, any chance of them bringing back playstation experience? Thought that was great and some big games were revealed there, such as Uncharted lost legacy
@DrClayman god don't get my hopes up like that 🤣
@Batesy125s I mean this year already had Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade (Korean) which both did well in Japan. ASTRO bot by Asobi is coming too. I think they've got the right focus on games.

Odd paragraph, makes a prediction and then goes on demonstrate why the prediction is likely to be wrong 🤷♂️
@Batesy125s It wasn't really a typical studio closure, it was a restructuring of Japan Studio, reorganising them under Team Asobi which was previously a smaller division under Japan Studio.
I LOVED Japan Studios back in the day but the fact is they had mostly been a support studio for many years, all their best new games were coming out of the smaller teams within them:
Considering the last two it was probably sensible that they restructured and put their weight behind Team Asobi, it gives us a chance at getting better NEW games out of them e.g. Astro Bot.
@riceNpea I said "around TGS", not "at".
Infinite hype. Sony always cooks with TGS stuff. Let’s go PlayStation.
@themightyant good to see another person on this comment section that actually has good knowledge of Playstation history. Loved a lot of their games but it was clear they were basically what became Xdev by mid PS4 and focused on support work.
@breakneck Indeed. The reality was in the last decade of Japan Studio - aside from those three smaller internal teams, two of which were already effectively dead - the new games they had put out were Puppeteer, Knack 1 & 2. Japan Studios were legendary, but simply weren't the same studio anymore. Times change.
@LiamCroft which still makes the prediction a reach seeing as Sony announced PS4 Pro in June around E3 then revealed it at PS event in September that year, so there's no precendent for doing it around an external event. Also, I didn't specify you saying 'at' in the first place.
I think revealing it in the run up to Christmas would be a mistake.
@LowDefAl I'm not doubting that some of that restructuring was shrinking the overall workforce, although some of the staff were shifted to other SIE studios. I believe that the "over 200 staff" metric was from before the closure of Team Ico, which happened earlier, to my knowledge we don't know exactly how many staff they had when they restructured.
Ultimately as a consumer it comes down to great games for me, would I rather they work on making something like Astro Bot bigger and better or would I prefer them to keep putting out games like Knack 1&2 which were their latest solo titles. For me the choice is clear but your mileage may vary, we all like different things.
@riceNpea PS4 Pro was fully announced during the September event; it wasn't first at E3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hme5BhT52_U&ab_channel=PlayStation
@LiamCroft that's what I said, it was revealed in September.
Sony 'announced' a new console, Codename Neo, just before E3 in June that year.
A Phantom blade zero release date would be nice
Would be dope if they drop a showcase, then we got to play some of demo on TGS
So they stopped attending as soon as Jim Ryan took over but now he's gone they went back.
Well hopefully they can do some networking with the Japanese Devs and publishers when they are there and strengthen their position in Japan.
@riceNpea I agree, revealing it before Chistmas/Holidays with a future (2025) release day would destroy any console sales, as some may wait.
If my memory serves me well... I remember that Sony use to do full announce hardware release dates during Gamescom. I certainly remember the PS3 Slim getting a price and date. And that came out the same year, just in time for the holidays.
It may sound silly, but imagine if Sony are holding out to find out when the Switch 2 comes out. As I am sure that would kill everything in it's path 😂
I am glad to see Sony back at the TGS and will be interested to see what they bring, because in the past this is where they usually show off their more "quirky" games from Studios long gone...
N.i.c.e.its about time.finally in my the rock voice.finnally PlayStation is back at the tokyo game show.this should be interesting.word up son
Glad they’re back but is a shame they’ve shied away from shows in recent years.
If they committed to E3 maybe that’d still be a thing.
Glad Sony is back at TGS. They really need all that Japanese marketing they can get especially with games like Stellar Blade and RoTR doing well. Sony needs to get their Japanese audience back before the inevitable Switch successor
Good. I want Sony to have a strong presence on the Japanese market, because that's such a strong part of its historic identity. We'll see what their TGS participation brings, but it's a step in the right direction.
Can only mean one thing:
Kunitsu Gami and InKonbini physical confirmed.
@Dodoo "If they committed to E3 maybe that’d still be a thing"
Even if Sony showed up at E3 every year, that wouldn't stop E3 from dying because of ESA incompetence handling the event. One of their biggest incompetence that made publishers & journalist stop attending E3 was this:
https://venturebeat.com/business/e3-data-leak/
Anyway...for me TGS has been a ho-hum for the last 4 years. So i don't expect any big news from the event or from Sony. Maybe they will show PS5 Pro with a couple of games like Astro Bot and FF 7 Rebirth and a bit surprise with Death Stranding 2 new trailer. But outside that, don't expect any big news.
So the PS4 Pro setup was:
Considering nowadays E3 is dead and it's perfectly normal for Sony to remain on the quieter side, it does feel realistic that even though there was no codename announcement there ends up being a Playstation Showcase in September to reveal the PS5 Pro with TGS being the first place where the public can try it out for themselves.
Please give me the PS5Pro, launch it around the holiday season, my money is ready.
To me, PS5Pro should be a Complete console in this generation.
PS4 complete the FullHD, PS4Pro is a half baked 4K console with unacceptable loading time, PS5 is acceptable 4K but it launch at the moment of ray tracing rising, the effect is stunning, but PS5 is not quite capable to handle this well, just intermediate level, low resolution in reflection(720p?), omitted RT here or there, frame rate drop or lower graphic setting to maintain RT run in 30fps…etc, well, beside all of these, game developer did a very good job to push the limit, for example, Spiderman on PS5 is a masterpiece, actually when PS5 just launched, not even PC can handle AAA at 4K/60/RT.
For coming PS5Pro, it should be a well balancing console in 4K/RT/Frames rate/Graphic Effect, I am happy to wait and buy it.
Maybe this is a sign PlayStation is finally leaning into its Japanese roots more. They definitely need to do that.
Tokyo Game Show
It's for Death Stranding 2, right? Kojima wants it shown off in country like the first game in 2019?
@Grumblevolcano yup that is the plan and it felt even more realistic after the summer SoP that had this forced feeling to it and not just bad like the 2023s. They are going to hype it with everything (few or a lot) they have.
Not going to say it was obvious because it wasn't but the moment Blade Zero announced their demo tour, two locations are tokyo game show and china joy and it was confirmed the studio was using the ps5 for the demo it made cense to think there was a chance.
AstroBot has japanese dna, Horizon Adventures needs to do big on the switch and japan in the biggest switch market, the deal with Konami for Silent Hill, Valorant on console that is ultra popular in Japan. This is just the right time to be back.
Hopefully this means they have something to show off.
if the rumor of the ps5 pro is true i could see them holding some games off to be announced to also be announced along with the ps5 pro saying hey these new games are ps5 only and will be enhanced on the ps5 pro.
@twitchtvpat
Do you understand why SONY suddenly shows up at TGS or is it a waste of resources in your opinion?
