We love a good 16-bit brawler here at Push Square, especially when they’re inspired by classic 80s movies like The Karate Kid. This latest effort from GameMill Entertainment will see you assume the role of Daniel Russo, Mr. Miyagi, Kumiko, and Ali Mills as you take on familiar foes like Johnny Lawrence and Terry Silver across 12 action-packed stages.

The press release reveals: “Set in the iconic locales of the first three, classic The Karate Kid movies from the 1980s, you’ll step out of the dojo and into the streets of the San Fernando Valley and Okinawa as you battle waves of enemies in this pixel art, side-scrolling, beat-‘em-up adventure.”

As alluded to in the excerpt above, the story follows the events of all three original films, and it’s backed up by a chiptune soundtrack inspired by the sounds of the era. In addition to single player gameplay, you’ll also be able to enjoy the entire campaign in four-player local co-op – although there’s no mention of online functionality.

The gameplay will obviously be key here, and the publisher is promising a combination of accessibility and skill. “Execute powerful combos, perform signature moves like the crane kick, and defend against the enemy dojo’s relentless attacks,” the blurb reads. “Each level presents new challenges and enemies inspired by the films’ memorable characters.”

The title’s due out on 20th September on both PS5 and PS4. Will you be waxing on and waxing off when this launches later in the year? Tighten your belt in the comments section below.
