Baldur's Gate 3 Player Stats

If you can believe it, it's (almost) been one whole year since the release of Baldur's Gate 3 on PS5. Crazy! But you know what's even crazier? The player-related stats that developer Larian Studios has just unleashed upon the world. Needless to say, they make for a richly entertaining read.

Please note that spoilers for Baldur's Gate 3 lie ahead.

Let's start with the character creation stuff, which isn't all that surprising, but still throws up some pretty eye-opening numbers.

  • Over 93% of players chose to make their own character
  • 15% of players chose Dark Urge
  • Astarion is the most popular origin character to play as (chosen 1.21 million times)
  • Gale is second (chosen 1.20 million times)
  • Shadowheart is third (chosen 0.86 million times)
  • Paladin is the most popular class, followed by Sorcerer, Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, Warlock, Bard, Wizard, Monk, Druid, Ranger, and finally Cleric
  • Elf is the most popular race, followed by Half-Elf, Human, Tiefling, Drow, Dragonborn, Half-Orc, Githyanki, Dwarf, Gnome, and finally Halfling

Next, we've got companion data. Again, there's nothing too surprising here, but the stats still tell us a lot about Baldur's Gate 3's community...

  • Shadowheart is the most kissed companion with 27 million kisses
  • Astarion is second with 15 million kisses
  • Out of all the possible companions, Minthara is the least loved, with only 169,937 kisses
  • 32.5% of players spent the night with Shadowheart in Act 1
  • 13.5% players slept with Karlach
  • 15.6% of players slept alone
  • A whopping 48.8% of players saw Shadowheart's final romance scene at the end of the game
  • 17.6% of players took Karlach to dinner
  • 12.9% of players held Lae'zel's hand (awww)
  • 658,000 players had sex with Halsin (you know, the guy who can turn into a bear)
  • 70% bedded him in his human form
  • ... Which means 30% told him to turn into a bear
  • 1.1 million players got, er, physical with The Emperor
  • 63% told him to use his Guardian form
  • 37% told him to keep the tentacles

And then there are all the mental gameplay stats, some of which have to be seen to be believed.

  • 1.9 million players got turned into a cheese wheel at the circus
  • Scratch the dog has been petted over 120 million times
  • The owlbear cub has been petted over 41 million times (people like dogs better, we guess)
  • 141,660 players at least tried to pet His Majesty the cat
  • 1.8 million players decided to betray The Emperor
  • 329,000 players somehow convinced Orpheus to become a mind flayer
  • 3.3 million players killed the Netherbrain
  • 200,000 of those Netherbrain deaths were caused by Gale going nuclear
  • Just 141,660 players have beaten Honour Mode (very well done if you're one of them)
  • 1,223,305 Honour Mode playthroughs have ended in a game over
  • 76% of players who failed decided to delete the save and start over (impressive discipline)
  • 24% continued the run via a custom playthrough (fair enough)

Bonkers, eh? Baldur's Gate 3 has obviously been a bigger hit than anyone ever imagined — including Larian Studios itself — and a lot of these stats really help put things into perspective. One year later, and the RPG's impact is still being felt — and we can only assume that it'll continue to be measured against for years and years to come.
