If you can believe it, it's (almost) been one whole year since the release of Baldur's Gate 3 on PS5. Crazy! But you know what's even crazier? The player-related stats that developer Larian Studios has just unleashed upon the world. Needless to say, they make for a richly entertaining read.
Please note that spoilers for Baldur's Gate 3 lie ahead.
Let's start with the character creation stuff, which isn't all that surprising, but still throws up some pretty eye-opening numbers.
- Over 93% of players chose to make their own character
- 15% of players chose Dark Urge
- Astarion is the most popular origin character to play as (chosen 1.21 million times)
- Gale is second (chosen 1.20 million times)
- Shadowheart is third (chosen 0.86 million times)
- Paladin is the most popular class, followed by Sorcerer, Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, Warlock, Bard, Wizard, Monk, Druid, Ranger, and finally Cleric
- Elf is the most popular race, followed by Half-Elf, Human, Tiefling, Drow, Dragonborn, Half-Orc, Githyanki, Dwarf, Gnome, and finally Halfling
Next, we've got companion data. Again, there's nothing too surprising here, but the stats still tell us a lot about Baldur's Gate 3's community...
- Shadowheart is the most kissed companion with 27 million kisses
- Astarion is second with 15 million kisses
- Out of all the possible companions, Minthara is the least loved, with only 169,937 kisses
- 32.5% of players spent the night with Shadowheart in Act 1
- 13.5% players slept with Karlach
- 15.6% of players slept alone
- A whopping 48.8% of players saw Shadowheart's final romance scene at the end of the game
- 17.6% of players took Karlach to dinner
- 12.9% of players held Lae'zel's hand (awww)
- 658,000 players had sex with Halsin (you know, the guy who can turn into a bear)
- 70% bedded him in his human form
- ... Which means 30% told him to turn into a bear
- 1.1 million players got, er, physical with The Emperor
- 63% told him to use his Guardian form
- 37% told him to keep the tentacles
And then there are all the mental gameplay stats, some of which have to be seen to be believed.
- 1.9 million players got turned into a cheese wheel at the circus
- Scratch the dog has been petted over 120 million times
- The owlbear cub has been petted over 41 million times (people like dogs better, we guess)
- 141,660 players at least tried to pet His Majesty the cat
- 1.8 million players decided to betray The Emperor
- 329,000 players somehow convinced Orpheus to become a mind flayer
- 3.3 million players killed the Netherbrain
- 200,000 of those Netherbrain deaths were caused by Gale going nuclear
- Just 141,660 players have beaten Honour Mode (very well done if you're one of them)
- 1,223,305 Honour Mode playthroughs have ended in a game over
- 76% of players who failed decided to delete the save and start over (impressive discipline)
- 24% continued the run via a custom playthrough (fair enough)
Bonkers, eh? Baldur's Gate 3 has obviously been a bigger hit than anyone ever imagined — including Larian Studios itself — and a lot of these stats really help put things into perspective. One year later, and the RPG's impact is still being felt — and we can only assume that it'll continue to be measured against for years and years to come.
What do you think of these player stats? Did any of them make you do a double take? Tell us all about who you've been kissing in the comments section below.

I finished a 320 solo run two months after the games full release, and loved every second of it, and in doing so achieved many of the events highlighted above.
I currently am going through a solo Tactician Dark Urge run, and have a duo Tactician run on the go too. I am also part of a trio run that has been going for about a year now (we are in the final stretch though 😂). In my duo run, we managed to recruit Minthara (Minty as I like to call her!) but I think romance is off the cards because she won't talk to me, probably because I knocked her out in Act 1 in order to be able to recruit her in Act 2. Oh well... 🤣
Absolutely love the game. Easily the best game ever made...
Can't wait to play this one day. Only have time for one or two epic games a year and it's Elden Ring right now.
It deserves the praise. If you want content this is the game for you
I missed the Cheese Wheel, but I did go to Jurassic Park on my playthrough 🦖
Its nice seeing the Shadowheart love as she's the best girl 😍
I'm currently playing this again as a Drow bard. The amount of race and class specific dialogue for them both is great. I love bullying goblins as a Drow.
Still waiting for a regular physical edition. I’m not paying $100 at the Larian site (including shipping) for a franchise I’ve never played before. Feels like I’m waiting forever 😭😭😭
@CWill97 Never gonna happen. I've eaten my words about this subject before but Larian literally never planned to make this game physical. If you're that upset about an $80 physical (only $10 more than the game costs digital, but I understand the shipping is rough), then buy from Play-Asia. It's currently sitting at 59.99, with $10 shipping for where I'm at. There ya go.
I'll wait til they get the framerate to solid 60fps (maybe Pro), if not there are plenty of other games out there (including quite a few 2nd/3rd/4th playthroughs of games i havent got round to yet!).
I don't like the game, and it makes me sad.
edit to clarify: I'm sad I don't like the game, the game itself is well made and I just wish I liked it.
Absolutely my favorite RPG of all time. I feel like it's one that I'll occasionally go back to for the rest of my life. Truth.
So what you’re saying is my druid gnome is not a popular choice? lol
Very cool seeing stats like this, for RPGs or choices and different things to happen to players a lot of cool things, funny things, otherwise can happen. Great stuff from a great game.
I'm pretty sure I'm responsible for about 10 million of those Shadowheart kisses!! 😘
Halfling needs to be more popular, especially if you're playing a stealthy build. Advantage on stealth checks is OP when I'm getting into position to snipe mobs and bosses.
Doing a 3rd playthrough at the moment. I'm going with a Dwarf monk named Kwai-Chang Caine, seeking to find balance in the area. Although he is having trouble being smitten with Laezel. Also in my group is Shadowheart switched to Life Cleric and currently Gale, but may go Halsen as I've used Gale everytime. Waiting for the new patch to go Dark urge for my 4th.
I hold Lae'zel's hand 😁
