Remember Croc: Legend of the Gobbos? It's back! In remaster form! Yes, the cult hit PS1 platformer is officially making its long overdue return with a shiny remaster. Check out the teaser trailer above for your first glimpse at the game in action.
The game, planned for release on PC and "all the current consoles", is being brought up to date with HD visuals and a modern control scheme, replacing the 1997 original's notorious tank controls. On top of that, the remaster will include the Crocipedia, a museum mode full of concept art, design documents, animation tests, team member interviews, and more, providing lots of insight on the original game's development. It's due for release "later this year".
Developing this remaster is Argonaut Games, which has also been resurrected. Originally known as Argonaut Software, the revamped company is intended as a boutique publisher, focusing initially on reviving old Argonaut IP, Croc being the first example.
Co-CEO Gary Sheinwald teases there's more to come. "I worked closely with [Argonaut founder] Jez [San] on the design and production of Starglider, Argonaut’s first big hit back in 1986, so to take up the mantle of relaunching Argonaut Games nearly four decades later brings me full circle, and we have further exciting announcements in the pipeline in the coming months," he says.
Are you excited about the return of Argonaut Games? Will you be playing the Croc: Legend of the Gobbos remaster? Butt-stomp a crate in the comments section below.

OH MY GOD! LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Dude...YES!!!
Croc was probably my favorite platformer on PS1 after Spyro and MediEvil.
I hope Jersey Devil gets a port one day too lol
NO. What?? Yes, I’m excited! My childhood remastered, let’s go!
We back baby!
My years of Bring Back Croc have finally paid off!
YAAAAAAAAAS!
MY BOI IS BACK!!!!😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 (Seriously did not expect Croc to get a Remaster before Soul Reaver we live in weird times 😅)
WHAT?! This has been a joke between a friend and me for years! IT'S HAPPENING PEOPLE!
@get2sammyb literally my words
Nice. Argonaut should make the Croc 3 game they cancelled.
And right there i'm 11yrs old again - Yeah late 90s, a certain marsupial was the star of the show; but damn that Croc nostalgia just warms the old cockles 🙂
@riceNpea I was thinking this too! If they’re back, then… time to revive the cancelled project?
IT'S ABOUT BLOODY TIME!!!!!
@Enriesto sadly it won't happen, I think. Too much work. Much easier to update an old game, squeeze more juice from the fruit.
Maybe if this game sells well.
Was hoping they’d do a similar remake like Crash and Spyro but I’ll still take this! I remember first seeing the trailer for it at the beginning of the Casper: A Spirited Beginning VHS. It was better than the film!
I can behind this. This was a great game back in the day. Doesnt look as tho its getting the Spyro or crash level of polish but just having an updated version playable on modern consoles is a win. Hopefully we get a physical version of it.
Awesome! I really like Croc, such a classic little platformer. Happy to see it coming back through a remaster.
My girlfriend is going to be so excited.
I have such good memories of playing this with my brother at my grandparents’ house.
I wonder how it plays today. Loved it in the 90s!
I think I somehow missed this one. And reading it had “tank controls” I’m glad I did. 😂
Oh my god yesssssss those images look fantastic.
Definitely a day one for me for sure, I’ll watch the trailer later.
Thank you so much Jez.
Yeeezooooo
Guess last year Jez was telling the truth when he said Croc was being remastered.
I really hope this does well, so that we can get Croc 2- The first game I ever owned
While I love Argonaut games, especially Malice A Kat's Tale, I don't know why they are only bringing this up to PS2 quality. Why not add some shader effects in places and smooth out the objects.
Amazing I loved those games.
I don’t think I have ever been interested in a remaster before but this hit me straight in the nostalgia. If it’s not a ripoff I may pick it up!
@rjejr contrary to a lot of other tank control games of its time, Croc actually works really well and still holds up in my opinion
I'm interested to see how the updated controls work
I had Starglider on the Spectrum back in the day. Very impressive for the time. The game came in a bigger box than usual with a novella.
Get in. I have rose tinted memories of this flawed gem.
I think with revamped controls this could be a fun blast as the original controls really are awful. Painful in fact
Oh god yes i loved this series as a kid.
I have some fond memories of this game, this is great.
That's a critical nostalgia hit I didn't knew I would take from these news! Let's fricking go!
PS5 in physical release, please !
Loved playing this game on PC as a kid! I remember getting stuck on that boxing ladybird boss for what seemed like ages.
This is actually pretty ace
@roe That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this. It reminded me of your sterling canvassing work in the Push Square tournament
@roe "contrary to a lot of other tank control games of its time, Croc actually works really well and still holds up in my opinion"
Thanks. I've tried a few of them in my time, who hasn't played Tomb Raider, but I just couldn't.
Still not sure how I missed this one. Guess I was too busy w/ FF7 and Parasite Eve at the time, but I played a bunch of 3D platformers too. Weird.
The love for Croc pouring out in this comments section does my old heart good.
I've had a pretty good day and seeing this news upon getting home has been the cheery on top!
YESSSSSS!!!! Finally. Just beat Malice 100% a month or so ago. Ah studios coming back (like Eden Studios did for racing games, other vets do in their own ways to form studios, others revived we don't know what they do next of Telltale, Avalance that made Cars 3 then revived for Hogwarts Legacy, Tango as a recent example and others).
IPs we never know the state of. The Croc's World smartphone ones I never know whether to count as part of the series or not but the Croc 1 & 2 PS1/Saturn/PC, then Gameboy Color then cellphone games then a gap then some smartphone ones called Croc's World. The series had a lot of games in a period of time.
Whatever the case though. I have been interested to try Croc 1 again but never see a copy of it so was happy when I saw a copy of Malice as had never played it but always wanted to.
Love the 5/6th gen platformers.
Indies try but their inspirations/game design just doesn't do it for me. Gori/Akimbot do more (not played the demo yet) but if were talking a Glover/Croc/Space Station Silicon Valley/Chameleon Twist and more nah most go popular IPs in inspiration yet the gameplay is a bit lacking and the game design or worlds feel 'modern' but in the ways I don't like of boring worlds, boring movesets with and ok moveset and if a Spyro/Banjo clone boring missions. That and I can only take so many Banjo clones. Yooka or otherwise.
While Sonic/'Crash/DK and more translate fine by Indies but I don't care for them.
I've wanted more original ones without their inspirations but many do follow inspirations but just don't have the same ideas, talent or can't, not just modern direction focus but the problem I find is I miss the experimentation or better balance of goals/level design and mechanics or animations, or humour even. Not modern as in pretty ok worlds but the tasks aren't fun, level design is fine but movesets usually don't change much and can be samey the whole game. I don't expect minigame experimentation but sometimes I do like a good mix of obstacles or level design quirks and many Indies just don't offer it.
Croc is simple but still fun in it's ex Yoshi game but still stands out well on it's own tank controls and all between the 2 console games.
The shuffle and better of the second game's controls (never played) I don't mind some tank controls, but it still varies per game's strafe or shuffle or other aspects to get around them. For a remaster would they offer modern full analogue or no? Then just tank only or a 4 or 8 way kind of thing besides animations and turning being very tank like then well bit more flexibility even if not full analogue or modern reworked so it keeps enough of the original there but in a bit better way maybe?
I cannot wait for this. Croc was one of the games I got when I first got a Playstation. Hopefully they add camera control to the right stick.
I know this game was not perfect, it was essentially for those kids who did not have access to a Nintendo 64 back then... but man, I'm in !
Nostalgia, baby. Nostalgia.
@Kidfunkadelic83 You know, I kinda like the way they have handled the visuals here. It looks great.
Finally! I remember reading about this last year over on Time Extension but it didn’t seem set in stone at the time. So glad it’s for sure now! 😁
@VeldinX
It was set in stone when Jez himself mentioned it was early development early June last year, was only a matter of time till an announcement trailer released though.
Wasn’t expecting him to bring Argonaut Games back though, so exited for the remaster and will be an instant day one for me
@Dragoon1994 Yes and no. His words at the time were “it’s a little premature to announce it”, so to my mind that means it could have still fallen through as it was in the very early stages of development. Just happy it’s official now! 😁
@VeldinX
Yeah true, it’s also due out this year as well so the remaster should be out in a few months time hopefully
