Having previously promised to bring us way more information on the action combat system in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, BioWare has gone ahead and dropped a bunch of gameplay trailers, each of which outline a different part of the experience.
The video at the top of this article details pre-combat preparation, giving us a much better look at runes that can be used to customise your characters, and the game's expansive skill trees. It actually looks as though there'll be quite a bit of freedom when it comes to building your heroes in specific ways.
The second video covers combat itself, showcasing both the action side of things and your more strategic options. Indeed, you can pause a fight at any time and issue commands to your allies. You can combine attacks, exploit enemy weaknesses, and generally just get a better grip on the battlefield.
Next, we're introduced to 'Primers', 'Detonators', and 'Ultimates'. The first two should seem familiar to anyone who's played Mass Effect. Taking clear inspiration from the sci-fi series, you can use certain abilities to 'prime' a target, before 'detonating' it with another. Needless to say, doing this gives you access to some big old damage multipliers.
Ultimates, meanwhile, are basically your super attacks — trump cards for when times are tough. This third video ends with some uncut gameplay footage, which is always great to see.
How do you think Dragon Age: The Veilguard is shaping up ahead of its 31st October release? Analyse every detail of these videos in the comments section below.

Well, I must say it seems fun, it's really "dragon age with Mass Effect combat".
October is really stacked tough
I wish they hadn't changed the combat. I miss the old system.
We first met the darkspawn in 2009, and 15yrs later they still look pretty great....Here on the other hand - they look absolutely f***ing insane 😎
Looks like good, classic action adventure combat with nifty fantasy spells. As long as we get plenty of character building, dialogue choices and interesting worlds to explore im down.
My only concern is with all the combat shown it turns into a corridor action brawler, but hopefully they’re just showing off the exciting part. A 10 minute video of two characters talking isn’t going to win over the undecided.
I was skeptical of the new combat system, but seeing it in first hand - I'm beginning to warm up to it.
There's a lot of customization option for the players, despite only having 4 active buttons. Theoretically, this streamlines player abilities - thus removing ability bloat - while passive/runes add further depth to the combat without it becoming too overwhelming. I am very okay with this.
The companion characters is akin to Mass Effect. You command your companions to perform an action, while you control Rook the entire time. This isn't that bad. My only concern is with regards to combat repetition. Will the battle get stale by the end game? I am hoping they have amazing boss fights with great boss mechanics to break gameplay repetition. But I guess we'll see.
Honestly, I think Dragon Age moving towards action RPG, as oppose to CRPG of DA:O, is a good strategic direction for the company. It sucks that the game is departing from its roots - but I'm honestly OK with this. After all, Dragon Age would need to compete with games like Baldur's Gate if DA remains a CRPG - and I dont think they have the capacity to, considering how amazing that game is.
Yeah, that looks rad as all hell.
Plenty of build variety, tasty combos and the game looks solid.
Cannot wait to dive face first into this.
@Meowmixes98 Surely you don't mean Origins? That one might have been fine in 2009... But play it nowadays, especially after 2 and Inquisition, and it's basically unplayable.
I know I can't deal with it; especially with that dreadful mage tower mission.. Good story tho.
I know I’m 100% getting this, so I don’t wanna see any of it. But damn, these comments really make me want to click the play button.
Either you're a student of old classic films, Mr Ramsey, or you're giving away you're age with that tag line!
For me personally the only Game that could come close to ff7 rebirth for game of the year but equally biggest disappointment if its poor
Mmmmm...
The game reveals started of really weak but the more they showcased, the more excited I am for this new Dragon Age.
Wow. Combat looks fun. Love what im seeing here.
@Maubari I might be remembering wrong, but i loved the combat of DA:O, didnt play it recently at all. But isnt it similar to BG3?
DA2 was pretty bad story(and scale) wise and i absolutelly hated Inquisitions mmo style quests and obnoxious characters.
Origins definerly the best in series.
Edit - nvm, DAO wasnt turned based -.-
Looks like could be fun, too much colorful cartoony particles for my taste, you dont even see the kick of ledge covered by a full screen of all colors of sparkles, and they dont look particularly artistic or advanced.
We'll see i guess.
The gameplay of those dragon age the veilguard looks amazing.dragon ave the veilguard is going to be a instant hit.dragon age inquisition won game of the year in 2014.word up son
I do need my Prime/Detonate fix so I'll keep an eye on it.
Cannot wait for this
@species Haha no Origins was a bit different. 2 was indeed a bit disappointing and Inquisition did have these tedious side quests.. but I enjoyed 2 and Inquisition quite a bit for what they were
Is it PS5 gameplay?
It screams cheap ARPG created from a checklist handed down by people who don't like games but they want money. Normally I give games a chance but this is one time I won't. Bioware is really doomed at this point. Mass Effect will end up being worse than Andromeda.
@Maubari Origins being unplayable nowadays?? Nah, i'm not having that - despite its rough edges, its still a damn masterpiece in my book....However - i do agree the 'save the mage tower' quest can go straight to hell though😊
@ironcrow86 Nah, the gameplay is hella annoying.. and graphically - all that black and brown - is just unpleasant to look at. Sure, Witcher 3 has that too but not ALL the time (White Orchard, Toussaint etc). I get they chose this to match the tone of the game, and rightfully so, but it's just so.. bleh lmao.
@Maubari Ok i'll give you that one; the colour has dulled somewhat over 15yrs, but nah - I can see where you're coming from on some aspects re: unplayable gameplay, but I think we'll have to agree to disagree... Definitely on my all time best games list 🙂
I never did care much for playing these, like watching them though weirdly. However I didn't like the trailer from a while back...have me popcorn marvel film vibes rather than dark fantasy, eurgh 🤣
The combat looks decent but that HUD is disgusting.
Can't wait for the game to drop. I really like the UI, Gameplay and the world looks great.
