Western Digital has added a brand new SSD to its officially licensed lineup, this time offering PS5 owners the chance to upgrade their system with a whopping 8TB of extra storage – the most that PS5 consoles allow.
The 8TB WD_BLACK SN850P NVMe SSD is the latest product in the company's partnership with Sony, offering space to store "up to 200 games" and coming with an optimised heatsink. The WD_BLACK brand has been a top choice of ours from the very beginning when it comes to PS5 SSDs, so we're confident this latest model will be a top-quality choice.
You will, however, have to hand over a small fortune to get your hands on one. The SSD launches at £718.99 / $999, exclusively at Western Digital's store; it'll also appear at other retailers later this month. To soften the blow just a touch, each SSD comes with a one-month trial of PS Plus Premium / Deluxe:

8TB WD_BLACK SN850P - Officially Licensed for PS5
Being designed with PS5 in mind, the new 8TB SN850P (above) is arguably the best choice for PS5 owners, but it's worth bearing in mind that the company also offers an 8TB version of its SN850X model – an SSD mostly designed for PC, but also compatible with Sony's console (just make sure you get the version with a heatsink linked below):

If you'd rather go for something a little more affordable, the same SSD model has also been available in smaller sizes for a little while now. You can get each model from Amazon and directly from Western Digital:
1TB
2TB
4TB
Have you upgraded your PS5's storage? Would you consider splashing out for the very best like this new 8TB model, or are you happy to stick with something more affordable? Tell us below.

Why? lol. Just delete and reinstall as needed. Nobody plays more than 20 games at a time surely.
I need an 8TB SSD for my PS5, but not at that price.
My 4TB WD Black SSD has been full for a while, but I prepared for it and bought a 5TB HDD to store the PS5 games I've platinumed. I hate having to delete and reinstall games. It will have to do for the next few years until this has a significant price drop.
Instead of a bigger storage, I could get 2 ps5s with that price.
That is, uh…that is a large and expensive SSD and I will never own one.
I bought a 4TB and I feel that's more than enough to finish the generation however this 8TB one will go great with the PS5 Pro!
Up to 200 games! Really?! I have 65 games and space on my 1TB don't indies count as games?
@GrimWillows this is the way my man. I only have maybe 3 or 4 bigger titles installed at a time, and a load of retro and indie titles for when I fancy something a little less involved.
I wasn't going to pay that much for it until I learned I get a one month PSN trial. Now I'll happily fork out 800 quid
This is just for next year's COD.
That's a LOT of space. I do occasionally butt up against space issues on my 1TB, but ultimately, like another poster mentioned, realistically you won't be playing more than 10 games at once. (And even that's a lot!)
I have my evergreen stuff like Genshin and Star Rail which I'll always have installed, otherwise I usually only have two or three others I'm actively playing.
No need for 8TB. Download and delete. 2TB would be nice sweet spot as some games are 100+ so having the sports games and multiplayer with friends need more than 1 tb but not 8
I've had a fabulous Cuda 4tb for almost 2 years now and it's fabulous. I tried an 8tb but it went poorly. Didn't have the integrated heatsink and just returned it. I'll wait for that mammoth price to come down and see if the PS5 Pro with full native back compat lands before trying another SSD.
No. Just no.
Also, no.
I deleted NBA2K at 150gb.to reinstall BG3. It's silly sh** like that that drives people to this 😅
A 1tb is enough to have a nice reserve of games, but still with the occasional sort out needed though. Maybe 2tb for Ps5 Pro.
I will wait for the 16TB model since this feels cheap
When the peripherals are more expensive than the system, you really need to revisit your money management skill or the lack thereof.
I have a 8TB external HDD for PS4 games and added 2 TB internal Samsung M.2 to my PS5. I can push PS5 games over to the HDD if I am not playing them. It's faster to just transfer them back over to the PS5 than downloading again if i want to play them again.
While it's not my thing, I'm sure it's the right fit for someone, somewhere. The 2TB one I have installed is usually just full of games I haven't played in ages.
I have the internal WD 4TB and external I have the 8 TB WD Black. Would love to have 8TB internal storage, but it is not the right price for me.
Yeah.......
I am sure we all have a spare £800+ laying about to purchase an 8Gb SSD
@QiaraIris Or you just have that kind of disposable income?
I use a 5TB external storage that works just fine for my purposes so this isn't for me. Plus I doubt I'd ever need that much space on my PS5, but good for those that would if they're willing to pay.
That's the one major issue with this gen, expensive storage, really not reasonable.
I just got a 2T version. By the time I fill that up, the PS6 will be announced
£720 for an SSD and they give you a month of PS Plus Premium... Worth, what, £20? Jesus.
I suppose there didn't need to be anything at all given away since you're still getting your SSD's worth but it hardly seems worth putting it on the box. Can you even add a free month if you have already subscribed?
That reminds me of people driving a crappy car not worth anything and buying a super expensive flashy CD player. I wouldn't pay more than a console for some extra storage. I'd rather pay for part of a gaming PC.
A thousand bucks for a gen 4 NVME? 0_o
All we need now is actual ps5 only games to put on them ....4 years later and still nowhere near justified owning the console. It's okay sony I'm sure the stock one will last its lifetime at this rate.
My Seagate 1tb was doing me fine until a game crashed and ps5 had to reboot....now it doesn't even register the SSD. Won't be buying another especially at that price.
I will think about the 4TB in the future but I just bought the xbox expansion card so I don't wanna buy more storage space right now.
2tb is fine. Had it since they activated the nvme port just after launch..
I keep all PS4 games on a 5tb external HDD, and all ps5 games on a 2tb Samsung 980 pro.
The ps5 itself is almost full of the operating system.. it saves to the internal SSD all the data needed to find the stuff on the HDD and the removable SSD. No idea how anyone copes with less than 7tb of extra storage!
I wish these companies would stop this BS, an SSD is an SSD. From various tests I've seen, these "official" SSD's actually perform worse than the non "official" version. Just get a 4TB SN850X without a heat for £270 and buy a after market heat sink(the ones that also replace the ps5 ssd slot cover) for as low as £17, for a grand total of £287 saving you £113 over the "official" 4TB which performs worse.
I think I have a 2TB one installed then for my PS4 games I have a 3 to 5 TB external one that I even transfer PS5 games to if I’m not playing them any time soon. 8 TB just seems like a lot at that price when you can get what I have much, much cheaper. I’m no Tech Wizard though
How much?!? At prices like that I might as well get a decent GPU and back into PC gaming!
I got the 2tb of this some time back and I've an 8tb WD Black D10 for PS4 games and PS5 holding, so I'm good ta.
Anyone who buys this is just stupid. Honestly the OG 1TB that comes with your PS5 is more than enough if you have half decent internet speed. I can download a 100g game in about 20mins
@BluWarfareHD
Or just save your money and get decent internet speed where you can delete and redownload in minutes
I paid about that much for a 4tb drive in 2021. I don't regret it. Not having to delete games just because I want to download a game has been wonderful.
No suprise there. I have yet to see just regular 8tb m.2s being a thing, yet alone one licensed for a sony console
Definitely not a price for poor gamers like me.
@thefourfoldroot1 Surely Sony's servers will be available forever and games will always be downloadable for the PS5...
@DaniPooo
They will likely last until I’m decrepit (20-30 years or so if I’m lucky). Beyond that I’m not too bothered.
@thefourfoldroot1 Can you still buy and download games on the PS3?
@thefourfoldroot1 it's just a difference in how you like to consume games. Sometimes I've got time to play something but don't know what so like to have potentials at my fingertips - by the time I delete and install something new that takes my fancy I probably won't have time to play anymore
U might as well get a PC at that price.
almost a grand for a bit of storage, absolutely insane pricing.
The more storage you have, the more you'll fill it. There's just no need for 8TB or storage on a console.
@DaniPooo Yes you can. You can't use a payment method directly, but then nobody should be doing that anyway given the discounts available on wallet top-ups.
@Xbox_Dashboard Yeah same here 4tb firecuda. I have 5tb hdd for ps4 games and now have 1gb Internet so games download so fast I don't need more space.
I had a massive 2TB HDD with a 250GB SSD layer for recently accessed data in my PS4, and that felt necessary.
With the PS5 though I've been more than happy with the standard storage. I delete games once I'm done with them and the option to delete and download games via the PS App on my phone means that I can set things in motion during the day if I fancy playing something in particular that evening. The generally far smaller file sizes on PS5 mean that I've never felt that the eight-hundred and whatever it is GB they give you as standard has never felt too small to me.
I'm the type of player that likes to finish a game and move on though. If you flit between games and want everything available all the time I can see how it might not work for you.
@DaniPooo
Don’t know. My PS3 is right next to my 4 and 5, but I’ve had no motivation to turn it on. Maybe if I was young and had unlimited time, but I haven’t even got time to play the games in my backlog let alone go through all the games I’ve already finished or play games that are 20 years old. Most don’t age well.
I'm glad it exist, the complaining only points at the larger global issue of lack of logic. It's existence should drive down the price of the others. Which benefits the consumer even more. Most of us won't buy nor need it, that's true. But the ones buying it helps us all.
Can you use these In a pc?
Eek! That is wallet-worringly 'spenny. But yeah, to echo a lot of sentiment here, I just realised/reminded myself the other week that I can store PS5 games on my 4TB external Hard drive if I need to make space. So no need to even delete/redownload the bigger games (which would indeed be a faff), plus I rarely play more than one or two big/AAA PS5 games at a time anyway!
I have the 2 TB Western Digital and I try to keep it no more than half full.
I used to download everything I wanted to play so I wouldn’t forget because they get lost among the monthly games I don’t want (but still add to my library because I’m afraid I’ll change my mind). Now, I add games to my library then put them in a “to play” folder, and keep about ten of those downloaded at a time.
@thefourfoldroot1 Not everyone is ok with the idea that games that you have payed for could be unplayable because Sony close down their servers. That's the reason to buy a large storage device, that way you can keep you games on till the drive eventually dies at least, and perhaps indefinitely if you make backups using drive cloning software
@DaniPooo
Sure, and if I thought Sony would die before me I’d maybe consider a small drive for select games. Don’t think something this large would be required though, even then.
@Czar_Khastik it’s also a great way to play FF16 on. It’ll run 16 times faster. With 16 times resolution.
Something to pick up in maybe ten years time when it'll likely cost $100 and everyone is well into playing their PS6s.
@thefourfoldroot1 Do you think that you are worthy to represent the entire gaming community?
@DaniPooo
Do you? We are just giving our individual opinions here, so chill. In fact, more people agree with me and will never buy this.
@thefourfoldroot1 I don't care at all about your individual opinion. Of course this will not be for everyone. In fact, most people won't buy it. And that makes sense. It's expensive stuff..
But for the group of people who don't care about physical media but still want to keep their games in one place for the sake of clutter reduction and minimalism this could be worth it.
Especially knowing that you and your kids might be able to enjoy those games long after Sony shuts down their servers.
Options are a good thing!
@DaniPooo
So you don’t care about my (or presumably other people’s) individual opinions, but still want to give your own? You are being very rude, and strangely vehement for a thread months old.
@thefourfoldroot1 No, I said that I don't care about your individual opinion. I care about different groups opinions. And I already know which group you belong to and you are already covered so your opinion is not very interesting.
Yeah I may be a bit rude, people tell me that I am blunt, don't take it personally.
@DaniPooo
Oh, so you put me into a group you don’t respect because you already know my opinion. History has shown that’s not a good thing you know. But perhaps you are correct in my opinion and I’m happy to own it if so. In case you are not however, please tell me what you think my opinion is.
@thefourfoldroot1 oh put a sock in it.
This started with: "Why? lol. Just delete and reinstall as needed. Nobody plays more than 20 games at a time surely."
And me explaining why that not everyone might want to do that.
Your opinion is obviously that you think 8TB is unnecessary and wasteful, probably because you can't afford it or you don't have that big digital library or you have other priorities in life, or a combination. That's fine, I don't care what your particular reasons are.
People are always crying online whenever something expensive is released, whether it's an Apple product or a high capacity storage medium. And I think people are crying mostly because it's something they wish they could have or something that they don't see the benefit in having
All I am saying is that this SSD might be worth it for some people.
And I outlined some reasons why already.
You don't have to buy it just because it exists, if it's not worth it for you then don't buy it.
I wouldn't mind buying if I could afford it. I am going to wait for the prices to drop as 8TB get's more common. but that's enough about me
Don't blame people for buying it at that price.
I won't blame people for not buying it.. Everyone has different priorities and different incomes.
Now you can get out of my hair
@DaniPooo
Oh, so I’m poor now, lol. I asked a question, you gave me an answer, I appreciate that, I don’t agree with it and said why but I’m civil. You, however, are a strangely combative and insulting person. Perhaps you should look into that.
For the record, it’s not about being able to afford the price, but about value. I have two PS5s, PSVR2, a Portal, and many digital and physical games and think they are all great value, I won’t be getting a PS5 Pro or this ridiculously priced, and to my mind unnecessary, 8tb(!) SSD because I feel they are exceptionally poor value for those with a standard PS5 and it’s given memory (which I have never bumped up against as I don’t play 20 games at once and don’t have time to play decades old games I’ve already finished when there is so much new to play).
Now, I’m off to play Max Mustard.
@thefourfoldroot1 Bla bla bla, keep talking about yourself all day.
Again I don't care.
@DaniPooo
Those people that said you were “blunt”…I think you misheard.
