While there’s a lot of doom and gloom surrounding consoles lately, largely due to flattening growth and spiralling costs, it’s perhaps worth remembering that there are still plenty of success stories that can be attributed to the PS5. One of which pertains to the Chinese market, where Sony’s system is selling two times faster than its predecessor.

Confirmation comes courtesy of analysis from Niko Partners, in the aftermath of Black Myth: Wukong’s launch. It’s worth remembering that consoles are still relatively niche in the region, where mobile and PC is generally preferred – but Sony will see this as a huge success as it works hard to try and grow its presence in the region.

“A limited time deal on the PS5 that is running this week has led to a surge in sales for the console that further cements these changing gamer preferences in the market,” the report writes. Bloomberg also noted earlier today that Sony’s console had enjoyed a massive influx in interest following the release of Game Science’s aforementioned action RPG.

One crucial detail that Niko Partners notes is that, while the Chinese market has historically been dominated by free-to-play titles, software like Black Myth: Wukong is helping to prove there is an audience for premium releases. It further illustrates the importance of the China Hero Project, which has seen Sony incubating local talent to create appealing content for its console.
