Though there doesn't seem to be much hype surrounding it, part of Sony's first-party slate for 2024 is the PS5 and PC release of Until Dawn. This fan favourite horror adventure game released nearly a decade ago, and now, it's coming back on modern hardware, with a pretty significant overhaul to boot. We now know the release date, and it's releasing just in time for the Halloween season — 4th October, 2024.
To mark the release date announcement, a new trailer has been released, comparing the new version with the PS4 original. Developed by Ballistic Moon, this upcoming revision of the game is more than just a resolution bump; it's been "built from the ground up" in Unreal Engine 5, boasting "updated character models, environments, interactable props, visual effects, and animations". Additionally, the game has been "completely relit" to take advantage of raytracing and enhanced materials.
As well as visual upgrades, the new version of Until Dawn introduces a modern third-person camera that brings it in closer to the player character. During certain parts of the game, you'll be able to control the camera freely. Ballistic Moon has also done some work on the game's prologue, giving more context to the Washingtons and the infamous prank.
Collectibles have been relocated, so if you think you know how to find them all, you can't lean on that for the new version. All totems are in different spots, and new Hunger totems have been added too. Finally, new accessibility options have been implemented, including an alternative to the Don't Move mechanic.
It seems like a robust reimagining of the game, then, but is it enough to convince you to pick it up again this October? Let us know in the comments section below.

The remake that no one asked for.....
Will also say that there should of been a £10 upgrade if you have the PS4 version, just like what they did with Witcher 3
Love the original but I'm a completist...or dope !
Either is good.
I loved Until Dawn, but there is 0% chance I buy this. The most unnecessary remake Sony has made yet. And competing against on onslaught of big releases in September and October too… Sure, October is THE month to release this, but I get the feeling this one’s destined to underperform Sony’s expectations.
If there's a free upgrade or 10 dollars upgrade I'll check it out, but not going to pay full price. I am curious to see what they charge for it. A great Halloween game for anyone who hasn't played it.
If it's $40 or $50, I would be tempted to pick this up because the visual improvements impressed me in this trailer.
I thought the concept of the game was cool but boy oh boy I did not like how it controlled.
Really enjoyed this game but not enough to pay to play it again, it doesn't really make sense but they do have a film coming out so no doubt want to try and cash in on that like TLOU & Fallout did with their series.
No physical again im guessing? Il probably pick this up if its a good price
Still sort of baffled that this exists. Was there really that much demand for a PC release that it justifies a complete remake? Because I can think of another PS4 game that also released in 2015 that would surely sell significantly more if it was released on PC today...
I'm interested in this. Loved the original. I just can't trust when PlayStation says it's "built from the ground up". I played the Last of Us Remastered and jumped straight to The Last of Us Remake which was allegedly "rebuilt". I encountered the same weird glitches that I had in Remaster in the same spots.
Already played through twice on PS4 so I'll pass, a psvr version would have been nice
Where is the paid upgrade Sony??
They could have just said, this is for PC porting. The upgrade should be free for PS players
@Danloaded Yeah also wondering if there will be a physical. Sony usually does them so would assume there will be, but the PS Blog post doesn't mention it.
Added this to my Steam Wishlist.
Granted, I will probably wait for this particular one to be on a sale or something since I do already have the PS4 version.
It will be a slow process, but I will eventually replace my PlayStation (and Xbox) catalog with PC versions.
@RagnarLothbrok It's not an upgrade if it's completely rebuilt from the ground up though. Regardless of how we feel about the necessity of this thing (which is dubious, to say the least), a free upgrade isn't a realistic expectation. Nor is a €10 upgrade path for that matter.
Not my thing but glad for the fans.
Done playing the OG. So yeah no for me.
Loved the game but I know the plot and for this type of game, it's not enough to just improve the visuals. Would have bought a sequel, but I don't think I'll be buying this
Wait, this game's getting a remake?
But why?
I mean, sure, it was a fun experience back in 2015 but really feels like this is not needed.
Especially not in a post-The Quarry world.
It's no wonder games are $70, it's because of needless remakes like this.
Same month as Alan wake 2 physical releases and Silent hill 2 remake, I think this will suffer in sales
I enjoyed the original enough to platinum it. I don’t have any need for this upgrade, but if you haven’t played it already and you have nothing better to do with your money, then knock yourself out.
First game is still good enough! Really don’t need remakes of relatively recent games imo.
There's no hype surrounding it cos its a remakeremaster nobody ever wanted, we could have had Until Dawn 2 instead.
For context I love the game, but I am absolutely not about to fork out presumably £50 - £70 for a pointless remaster, so I hope like Last of Us 2 there's a £10 upgrade fee if you own the original.
I’ve never finished the game so I’m undecided as a mate gave me the game for free (disc only, who does that?) and it went on the back burner.
Liked the game but only played this last year. It's still very fresh in my mind. I would prefer a true sequel.
I don't feel that the remake is unnecessary at all. For someone who is just now getting a PS or has never played it before (PC), it will be perfect. The original still looks good even today, but with enhanced textures and effects, it will obviously be even better.
I won't be buying it, but it will be great fun for those who do. It's not mandatory to buy it, so there's no need to get upset or complain.
Physical or no sale with the preorder content included ofcourse.
This game already looked really good, I don't understand the need for a remake.
I had a good time playing it. I went through it 3 times but I never got everyone to survive. I got close though haha.
I love how so many people judge remakes as if they're targeted solely at the original audience. A film adaptation is in the works as well. If this isn't for you, that's fine. Not for you ≠ unnecessary.
Based on the trailer alone, rebuilt seems to be a bit of a stretch.
To my, admittedly aging eyes, all that has changed is an updated lighting implementation and upressed visuals.
Good for those that have never played it before, but pretty useless for everyone else in my opinion.
@Spanky didn't they use the PS4 remaster for the PC version and Nixxies wasn't doing it. Everybody thinks Iron Galaxy did it but they didn't it was remastered in House by NG Iron Galaxy just gave them adviced etc.
I got it Day 1 on PC it was a broken mess still uses far more resources than it should unfortunately I got it from cdkeys and couldn't get a refund
@Nakatomi_Uk I'm talking about the PS5 version. Naughty Dog claimed everything was built from the ground up. I think that applies to the PC version too, ND just royally screwed up / lied. I think they did what Bluepoint does. Just Bluepoint has the decency to call their games Remasters and not built from the ground up remakes.
Sucks you couldn't get the refund. That port was/is unacceptable.
@Spanky Since when did people start calling remasters "remakes"? Mafia definitive edition is a remake, dead space/tlou are just blatant remasters, i bet if i got tlou on pc it'd have the same story as when I played the PS4 version and it'd be missing the multiplayer so it'd be a demaster.
I love the game and the update looks great but I am not paying full price. An if full price is the only price that i can get as someone who bought the original then i will wait for a sale
