Capcom seems to be gearing up for a blowout on Monster Hunter Wilds. The highly anticipated action RPG is currently targeting a vague '2025' release window, but we wouldn't be at all surprised to see it land in the first few months of the year, so that the publisher can have a potential juggernaut on its fiscal year reports.
With that kind of timeframe in mind, it makes sense for Wilds to start pumping out some new gameplay footage. Capcom's kicking things off with three rather informative videos that cover basic mechanics, the brand new Focus Mode, and the slightly revamped Great Sword weapon type.
The Focus Mode overview in particular is going to be of interest to returning players, as it demonstrates the new mechanic's usefulness. Essentially, you can use it to land more precise attacks, eventually weaking certain parts of the monster's body. And with a wound in place, you can then unleash a new Focus Strike that deals big damage.

Great Sword
Our main takeaway here is that Monster Hunter Wilds still looks incredibly promising, and we can't wait to see it in full flow via an expanded gameplay showcase. In the meantime, there's no doubt that we'll be seeing the game's other weapon types spotlighted in the near future.

I know it’s heresy but I cannot get into these games anymore. The mechanics are so bad and obtuse, great sword video is stressing me out just watching!!
Suuuuper excited for this, can't wait to see what they show at Gamescom
@Yagami Agree with 4U, been playing it again recently and it's just SO good
@Colour I'd rather play MH than the generic cookie cutter games that are saturating people's backlog.
Man, I cannot waaaaait!! Seems they kept a lot of QoL improvements from World.
@Yagami The dream! I really hope they do one day
@Yagami I’m not having a hard time understanding anything it’s just too slow and tanky. Maybe I’m doing something wrong but it feels like playing earlier souls game where all the combat takes place standing still. I get why people love it just doesn’t work for my brain.
@Yagami Im glad it is going this route, actually feeling like you're hunting down a monster "Monster Hunter" through searching its tracks is great. The open world addition will add a lot to that and the immersion. Although Rise dumbed it down hard and was very disappointing in that aspect and was just simply too easy and quick that I didn't really care to continue it.
@Colour I only got into mh when world released so I’m relatively new to the series, I tried some of the older titles on the Wii and 3ds but didn’t gel with them.
I would say, experiment with all of the weapons. Some are considerably slower than others and require a good understanding of a monsters attacks and openings in order to use effectively - the great sword is one such weapon.
The sword and shield has pretty high mobility and is a lot faster than many of the other melee weapons, as are the dual blades. This means they’re slightly more forgiving when it comes to landing hits and avoiding monster attacks.
@Colour my feelings exactly. the movement in combat is miserable and the length of the fights make the games so unenjoyable for me. I have wanted to love them and have tried to get into the series for years but I bounce off every time because the mechanics are anti-fun and I cannot see it any other way
Really looking forward to this game, but it has that sneaking feeling of being more akin to MH:World than anything else and that game fell off rather quickly for me. It did a lot of cool stuff in the beginning, but just fell flat for me. I still jump into it every now and then, but not like Rise/Sunbreak; they brought me back to the series with some great new gameplay mechanics and locales.
@Colour I had the same problem until Tri, shockingly on the Wii.
I really had to dive deep into the game and try every weapon, which felt like a slog, but I finally found my stride and began to enjoy the game. Now it is one of my favorite franchises. I main the Insect Glaive after MH4 and it never seems tanky with that weapon or some of the other lighter weapons, i.e. charge shield in Sword&Shield form, Sword & Shield, Dualies, Light Bowgun. It took a long time to find the right weapon for me, but I found it and really enjoy the game now. I do understand just not being able to get into it though. I have that with lots of games these days.
Man I love seeing all the different weapons and the badass moves you can pull of with them, only for me to instalock the longsword each and every game 😭
I’d much prefer the slower based rpg than trying to make sense of w/e this version does differently.
@Neither_scene @Unit_DTH After buying Rise for one last shot last year maybe I’ll go back and try to use more weapons and see if it clicks. People love this franchise so much it makes me want to get it but thus far… it hurts.
@Logonogo This is exactly how I feel. Love the aesthetic and monster/weapon design but I play for a couple hours and start nodding off
@Colour @Logonogo I used to be like y'all till it clicked, now I'm closing in on 2000hrs spent on World Iceborne Rise. Hunting and crafting wonderful gear is a joy. The mechanics are deep, it becomes enjoyable when you understand them. Keep trying, it's now one of my favorite franchises of all time!
@TheArt Diving back in after work this week. Really hope this is the time since capcom + gigantic monsters and weapons should be a dream for me. One more time can’t hurt!!
@TheArt ah man I feel like I do understand is the thing but the gameplay just does not feel good to me. they clearly put a ton into them and I respect it tremendously but it just does not click it is so damn slow. anyway I am sure on a slow day I will boot it up again but the future looks bleak for me and this series haha
@Logonogo @Colour Using Dual Blades or Sword/Shield makes for faster gameplay. Using that huge buster sword - my favorite - is slow, as it should in reality, you miss a lot of hits but when your attack lands...is so satisfying. That's the realism in the gameplay. Watch a monster's weakness - say Ice - craft a weapon with ice elements, and if the monster attacks with fire, craft gear with fire resistances. Things like that is just the tip of the iceberg, game is deep.
@Yagami It's not immersion breaking at all when it's well explained in the story along with being in the cutscenes. For the Seikret leading us to the target automatically, yes that does suck, unless it works the same way in World where we have to find clues first and then have the mount go to its location. Other than that I'd imagine clues and evidence will go away since there's not really a point to it.
@Colour I fully understand. Don't go buy the game again if you know it doesn't fit, but if you still have it... try out lots of weapons and practice with them in the hub.
