Can anyone honestly say they’re following the story of Call of Duty’s Zombies mode? We’ve been tangentially aware of the lore for some time now, but we couldn’t tell you the first thing about it. The upcoming Black Ops 6 will apparently continue the so-called Dark Aether plot, but we don’t really know what that is

Here’s the official blurb with some context for all four of you who care: “After two years battling undead outbreaks across the globe during the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War timeline, the CIA-led Requiem team finally succeeded in closing the last remaining dimensional portal, banishing its denizens back to the nightmarish hellscape known as the Dark Aether.”

Wait, there’s more? “Agent Samantha Maxis sacrificed herself to essentially seal this twisted dimension from the inside. Worse was to follow, as Requiem’s senior staff members were unceremoniously arrested on the orders of the Project Director, finally revealed to be none other than Edward Richtofen.”

Black Ops 6 will take place approximately five years later, and promises to delve further into Richtofen’s motivations and goals. Crucially, though, it’s mostly (presumably) going to find you blasting unfathomable numbers of undead in the head. A full gameplay reveal is planned later this week, on 8th August, so keep your eyes peeled for that.
