One of PlayStation's biggest success stories is the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series. While there have been some sloppy landings here and there, the skateboarding franchise has been extremely popular ever since the first entry, which released 25 years ago. The series' namesake has commented on not only the legacy of the games, but also its future.
Posting on Instagram, Tony Hawk shares a clip of some motion capture sessions from the first game's development, and says a few words about how the series has impacted not just his life, but the sport of skateboarding as a whole. When it comes to what's next, it seems his hands are somewhat tied by Activision, but he pretty much confirms something is on the horizon. "I’m not supposed to tease anything else about the future of the series; but there will be a future," he says.
This follows on from comments he made in a recent interview, in which he reveals he and Activision are working on something "the fans will truly appreciate".
It seems we won't be getting any big announcements right now, then, but knowing there's more THPS on the way is very exciting. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, a remake of the first two titles, was very warmly received by fans, so we're hopeful the next game will build on that. It's unclear whether we'll get the 3 + 4 remakes, as that project was canned when Vicarious Visions was dissolved, but who knows?
Happy 25th to THPS! Are you keen to see more from this beloved series? Grind into the comments section below.

Love that dude and love the series.
My whole taste in music is based on THPS and Jackass
I am dreaming of an Underground remaster
Crazy to think that from 1999-2010, a THPS game came out every year. The series was incredibly consistent for most of that.
Hopefully Xbox surprises us with a Tony Hawk franchise revival
25 years here, 30th anniversary edition hardware there, PS making me feel old lately.
Im not saying that the series does not have its fans, but skateboarding, and extreme sports in general, have never been as popular again as they were around the year 2000. Every household name that has ever come from the x sports came from that time.
This franchise is now niche.
@somnambulance Completely agree that Under Ground needs a remaster! It also has one of the greatest sound tracks ever!
Let’s not forget it’s Xbox owned.
May not even arrive on ps.
Microsoft buying all these beloved IP and doing naff all with them. Sounds about right
Remake of THPS3 for me please!
People here still believing that anything Activision related will never be released on PS lol
Id be down for more remakes, but after THPS 5 please don't attempt a new game ever again.
I’m so up for anything THPS related. Still think asking for a 3+4 remake is bizarre given the two games play completely differently, possibly people didn’t play the games at the time. 3 as DLC for 1+2, 4 as a separate remake.
@nessisonett all they have to do to satisfy me is adding more stages and music. Maybe a tiny update on the graphics, but it's no must.
Expanding on what is already there. Because that was dope and perfect.
@yazzika It’s the best skating game I think I’ve ever played. That and Skate 3. The challenge system is just such a great innovation. I still haven’t gotten the platinum because it takes ages to get to level 100 and I’m perfectly ok with that, I can dip in when I want.
Why do people want 3+4.. I’m as uninterested in that as I was 1+2. Give us Underground 1&2! And American Wastland! Would be beyond hyped for that, amazing games.
I hope it's a remake like 1+2. I miss games like this. Skateboard, BMX, Snowboarding games still appeal to me and I'd like to play more of them on PS5.
@lostlaserdroid Totally. The extreme sport titles on PS2 where so much my jam.
Most new games would save on music licenses though and it would just not be the same anymore.
@yazzika music was definitely a big part of so many of these games and if they do remake games without all the music that people remember it's going to be negative towards the game no matter how well it plays. I'm more interested in the gameplay and if we get new games or remakes without a few classic tracks I'd rather that than not having more games in the skating, bmx, snowboarding genres.
They should reboot Underground or make a third one.
