PS5 Pro won’t ship with an Ultra HD disc drive, but don’t panic, as a detachable one can be added whenever you like. Those of you who own the existing PS5 Slim will know that the disc drive is a separate standalone component, and while it’s sometimes bundled with the console, you can choose whether you want to install it or not.
There’ll be no version of the PS5 Pro with the Ultra HD disc drive bundled in, but you will be able to purchase one separately if you want to. This obviously adds significantly to the £699.99/$699.99 price point, as Sony currently flogs individual disc drives for £99.99/$79.99 on PS Direct. So, you’re looking at almost £799.99/$779.99 if you want the ability to play physical media as well.
You’ll also be able to change the face plates of the PS5 Pro, much like with the existing PS5 Slim and PS5 consoles. These obviously won’t be included, nor will the vertical stand, which is sold separately.

Frankly that doesn’t make me worry less.
It's time we vote with our 💰🤑
All for the low low price of £820 if you want a vertical stand!
I’m looking forward to the soapbox saying this is a good deal when judging by inflation!
Typo - should be $779
Ray tracing is expensive, but PS5 Pro is still cheaper at 699. 👌

Lucky Americans! It goes down in price if you buy a disk drive!
$700 console + $80 drive + $~20 stand. That’s $300 additional from the base model just to not have to pic between performance and fidelity mode.
This generation is a joke.
Not including the stand is stupid though let's be honest.
$800 for ps5 pro with a disc drive is insane lol.
@Vovander Thanks, fixed.
Yeah, no thanks.
This should be £599 with a disc drive... even then I'd be hesitant with how lacking PS offerings have been this gen.
I'm usually Mr. Positive, but unless something changes I'm going to be going all in on PC gaming because so far the PS5 has been mostly used for Hoyoverse games.
I'm sure they'll move a ton of these, but not to me. That's too much for incremental improvements. I don't mind buying a new system every 6 or 7 years or whatever, but this feels like I'm back to being a PC gamer where I have to spend hundreds on new components every year or two. Not interested.
£825 for PS5 Pro + drive + stand... errr... NO!
But Honest question: Is ANYONE getting one?
We are beyond worry at this point. This is a big fumble.
It’s crazy price.
But why are people suddenly now thinking it was for the masses. It never ever was.
It’s for enthusiasts.
Yeah just £800 in total
It cost me that for my PS5 with a disc drive and my Switch OLED
On the flipside i'm surprised they didn't mention PS5 Pro boost mode which apparently works with up to 8500 PS4 and PS5 games. I wonder if Elden Ring will be smooth.
Additionally this is the current list of games getting a PS5 Pro Enhanced patch Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more.
Funny we’re being asked to upgrade to this machine for silly money to get the 4k/60fps the original PS5 was supposed to provide.
I’m losing my patience with Sony atm.
Nah, I'm good Sony.
Sammy, respectfully, that’s an insane attitude. “Don’t worry, just spend an extra £100 on top of an already £700 console”
Screw this. $700 without a disc drive?! Heck no. I’m out. I was thinking about it
And the stand!? This is insane. Nickel and diming. I went from considering this to “I hope this fails like Concord”.
Adding it is not the point…. the point is we would have to pay even more money to add a disc player…. To an already expensive $700 console….
This is literally the equivalent to those newer expensive vehicles that make you pay for features like seat warmers
Not including the disc drive and still asking for $700 is a hard pass.
People will keep crying over how expensive this is. But I doubt it's actually that expensive when you stop and think about what a gaming PC would cost that is about as powerful and as capable of raytracing..
No-one is forcing you to buy this machine, just wait for next generation and enjoy your regular PS5's if you can't afford this product.
Meanwhile I will look to put in a preorder for this console because for me it's worth it, and no I won't but the disc-drive anyway because I don't care about discs these days.
£800! You'd need a detachable head.
This is a joke. After taxes, this thing is going to be around $850. You could buy 4 Nintendo Switch Lites for the same price. This is the most tone-deaf price point I could have ever imagined.
Hard pass from me. I'll wait till it's bundled and cheaper. £699? Comedy.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
that may well be true but it still strikes the fear of god into me worrying what they will try to get away with charging for the PS6 when that inevitably releases.
The PS6 will have even better specs so they will presumably charge even more... not less
Lately, I've been buying a lot of digital games (sometimes replacing some of my old physical games like Arkham Knight)
Still, I would love to have the option to have a disc drive and I don't for physical games to go out soon. While it's good to know that the PS5 Pro is compatible with the removable disc drive, it should have been included at that price
DW then it's only £800 if you want the pro with a disc drive... totally worth it to see them extra few blades of grass
This is a dedicated PlayStation website where the enthusiasts watch the presentation live. Only about 10% of those polled are going to buy the pro. This spells disaster because the general public won’t be paying those prices if we aren’t interested.
Lol, "worry"? It just makes me angrier. It should be included and be £599.99 or less. Otherwise they can screw off.
Just checked and the disc drives are around 130€ here. Yeah, not spending over 900€ on a console, and I'm not giving up my physical PS5 games either.
I'll just vote with my wallet and not get this console. They made a bad call with that pricing, it's absolutely ridiculous.
@themightyant I am. To go with my £530 PSVR2, my £180 Dual Sense Edge controller thingy, my £150 sony ear muffs or whatever and my £13 a month crazy pills prescription. Hell I'll add on the remote too while I'm at it.
And then play the whole damn thing on the £200 Portal so as not to benefit one tiny bit.
@DaniPooo meanwhile I can afford the product and the price is ridiculous, considering you could knock up a second hand PC for a relatively comparable price that basically seems like it'll have 1st party ps titles at some point, and ofc sub to Xbox...
It's always good to cover several segments of the market. The people who don't care about graphics and performance can stick to the base model, and the people who do can upgrade. People with physical games can get a disc drive, those without don't have to.
So £800 to use all my discs, well should I not be surprised 🙄🙄
@themightyant I'll get one. I understand it is a niche product and so I'm not too unhappy at the price, i expected it, especially post Covid. I paid £550 for PSVR2 and a PS5 Pro represents better value for money for me and the 4 years or so I expect to play it.
I think there's a lot of knee-jerk reactions going on, which I can understand, but its shortsighted. I'd be FAR more upset of this were the price for a PS6 and my only console option
@DonJorginho it is a good deal adjusting for inflation. Even the base PS5 is a good deal adjusting for inflation. People can mock this sentiment all they want but gaming hasn’t increased so much over the past two decades compared to other industries. Hobbies cost money and the best toys for any hobby cost money. No one is forcing anyone to buy a pro or a very expensive GPU just so they can run a game well and please FPS foundry!
I guess it's safe to predict that Sony will go fully digital with PS6.
Oh well, i have my old consoles ready.
@Slideaway1983 Well good luck finding even a 2nd hand PC with the same performance for less money.. Good luck
We have to remember Xbox is releasing their "new" console for $599 later this year. So it was impossible for Sony to price it the same.
Come to think of it, if this was done intentionally by Xbox to price their console so high, than thats a genius move
What a complete rip off
Also If this thing is $700…..boy I bet PS6 is going to cost as much as iPhone Pro Maxes…
And also is full digital with a purchasable disc drive attachment going to be the new norm for future PS consoles????!
All digital future is looking to be real.
We still have basic console no one is forcing u guys to buy this if you don't want it.
@ButterySmooth30FPS can get a pc with better graphic for that price tag
The PS4 Pro was pretty niche, only sold 14.3 million (out of 110+ million total units sold).
This won't do a third of even that. Betting under 4 million sales in the next 5 years. Call me Michael Pachter. I think this is more a marketing stunt to create brand interest / brand refresh. Looks low effort design-wise and upgrade is absolutely, entirely negligible.
Listen up Sony: You. Have. Not. Fully. Utilized. The. Base. PS5. Do better.
Also, maybe make the high priced luxury model come standard with a disc drive, as your hardcore target market gravitates more towards physical games compared to the casual consumer. Geez, someone send these guys back to business school.
@themightyant I still will. I'll sell my PS5 to CEX for £232, £593 for the pro and add ons.
@KillerBoy And re-buy the 400 games I have on my PS5? Don't make me laugh.
@themightyant the patch is just the removal of the fidelity-performance slider.
@Vaako007 I agree with this sentiment, trust me i was hoping for a lower price as well, but still have to agree its still a fair price point all things considered.
Also agreeing with @DaniPoo you cant find the same performance on PC for the same price
People being a bit unreasonable or ignorant
@Member_the_game but the ps6 is going to be the default console. They will make and sell far more (brings down costs, economies of scale)
The Pro is probably going to sell 5million max (unless future price drops) so more expensive to manufacture.
@Vaako007 “best toys in the hobby”
I'm hoping for a price drop for the "classic" but this is ridiculous to expect more consoles to ship for patches on older games for updated graphics.
How much are black face plates? Would my remaining £1.27 be enough?
No Marble Madness HD. sigh…
I was considering upgrading at up to £600 with a disk drive. But I think I will probably pass on this and stick to my physical ps5 I got around a year ago on sale. Also my LGC1 is only 48 Inch so lower resolution probably dosent look as bad than on a larger screen size. Maybe in a year or so if there is a disk model on sale but there probably won't be 🤷♂️
It’s the forced 2tb adding the money
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
I'd love to be proven wrong and only time will tell but I'd be amazed if the PS6 starts at any less than this.
The only way it's cheaper is if this Pro absolutely bombs and they realise most people (not everyone obviously but most) just aren't prepared to pay that much for a Games console
@DaniPooo I didn't say I wanted the performance though... believe me once you get older and your eyesight goes, no matter what tech speak they say to you you start to question is that kind of money really worth it for negligible enhancements. As I always play performance anyway, I blatantly don't care about 3-d retina imprinted ray tracing of a corvette on a Nissan leaf in GT7 🤣
Terrible show: $700 (system) + $80 (disc) + $30 (stand) + Tax.
That's over $900 (!) for only a modest/questionable upgrade?
Even $700 for everything would be pushing it...
So I have an original PS5 with a disc drive, which means most of my game collection is physical, no Sony want me to pay £700 for the pro and then spend extra for the convenience of playing my games, nah no thanks Sony, you can shove it where the sun don't shine. They've dropped the ball with this one. Disc drive should be standard.
@Member_the_game
This will bomb. I'd bet my firstborn on it. Price, debatable upgrade, no disc drive for the hardcore crowd that prefers physical. Yup, I'll bet anyone 100 bucks right here, right now this flops bad. I'm not saying that for theatrical effect, who wants to take me up on the bet?
@riceNpea @Intr1n5ic @Ooccoo_Jr Good for you guys. Enjoy! Let us mere PS5 plebs know how it runs in due course
It does make more sense if you are tied into PSVR2 I think, as I expect that will get a boost too. Happy gaming.
EDIT: Also I just saw 2TB storage that will add to the cost.
@UnlimitedSevens what would be called a flop?
It’s a niche product for a niche audience.
People are making it out like it’s replacing the OG ps5. It isn’t.
It's good to see Sony still has a healthy dose of humour after the Concord flop.
@LogicStrikesAgain the price is fair for the upgrades they're offering but not having a disc drive is absolutely ridiculous and will put most people off. Why should we pay £700 for a pro, then have to pay even more on top to play out collection of games that we've already spent £50-£70 on...... it's totally ridiculous of them to expect their consumer base to pay this. A disc drive should be standard, at least at launch. Those that play all digital are fine either way, but those that prefer physical are being ripped off.
@C25CLOUD It's not about "who forced you to buy PS5 pro?" but the very premium price and how Sony treated disc drive as optional is a worrying future for PS6 and physical disc...
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
I dunno. We will have to consult the experts. Let's say, a flop is under 4 million lifetime sales. I offer 2:1 odds. Any takers lol?
CA$999 and doesn't come with a disk drive, c'mon Sony...
@themightyant if it had the disc drive at 700 with the extra storage, it probably would’ve been a fair price.
But that extra for the disc drive is the killer for many.
“Don’t worry, you can spend another $79.99 plus tax on top of that $699 plus tax to make your Pro as capable as your original PS5!”
Oh, I wasn’t worried. I’ll just not spend the $699 in the first place!
Yeah, i won't worry because i won't be buying
@FuzzieGinge88 Well you could turn it around and ask, why should people that play digital (which are the majority it seems) pay for a disc drive? Discless seems to be the main hardware now pushed just about everywhere, PC, Xbox etc.
You can see it as the standard price for a full PS5 Pro with disc is $780. I dont think ure being ripped off, digital has always been less expensive than with the disc drive.
Not necessarily saying im happy with the price btw
I keep seeing "This game will be available for PS5 Pro". does this mean that you can only play PS5 Pro enhanced games on the Pro ? You can't actually play regular PS5 games on Pro ?
Seven years ago this December I picked up, at Best Buy, a PS4 PRO bundled with a game for $400. No hidden charges for a disk drive or black panels.
@Octaslasher You can play all regular PS5 games on the Pro and some games, like the ones shown, will be enhanced to take advantage of the new hardware
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Agreed. At £699 with EVERYTHING, including the 2TB of storage this has, I would have considered it. But as a physical media fan this is a no. At least for now...
Perhaps Digital Foundry comes out and says PS5 Pro boost mode is a game changer and that PSSR is worthwhile, then I MIGHT consider it, but it would take a LOT to convince me at that price.
What's most crazy is PS4 Pro was £349. Half the price WITH a drive.
@themightyant perhaps my original post needed more sarcasm because obviously I am not shelling or for this monstrosity.
In my mind (despite the tone deafness) they'll still sell 100,000 units minimum so thats 70mil in Gross. Which probably recoups some of the Concord dent in Net. I wager they landed on this pricing strategy recently 👀
@get2sammyb Why do you only mention USD/GBP prices? I think your audience also comprises many Europeans!
@DaniPooo don't start with the "if you can't afford it" nonsense. I've got £800 spare, the problem is that this is simply too expensive. If it's worth it to you, great. I hope you enjoy it. But your little comment there isn't on.
@Ooccoo_Jr LOL missed that. To be honest I don't begrudge anyone who has the spare cash wanting the best, just as I don't begrudge people paying £1,650 for a 4090 GPU, it's not what I would do, but we're all different and earn different salaries.
THAT PRICE THOUGHT <.<
@Shakybeeves
Well PS4 Pro sold 14.3 million lifetime to put it in perspective. That wasn't considered that great at the time, and PS4 Pro certainly had its detractors for sure, but it was objectively a much more attractive package than whatever this is.
It will do a lot more than 100k units because this is Sony we are talking about here. But it will still sell miserably by any measure. I suspect the R&D costs to slap this together were pretty low, I would be soooo curious what their break even point in sales for this would be.
My theory: Sony does a lot of market research - they know full well and with statistical certainty this is going to bomb, but the Pro release is more about refreshing the brand than creating revenue.
"PS5 Pro won’t ship with an Ultra HD disc drive"
So stupid. Easy pass for me.
@NoCode23
Don't forget the vertical stand (batteries not included).
Man I used to talk smack on the PS4 Pro back in the day. But compared to this, it looks like the deal of the century. At least it added 4k and enhanced VR compatibility, that was actually a meaningful jump. Now we are splitting hairs about framerate and more foliage. What a joke.
@Scrubchub is it too expensive though? Like really? Try to find a gaming PC for the same price and see if the gaming performance compares.. Especially with raytracing.. The gaming performance you get for the money when buying the PS5 pro is actually a pretty compelling deal (If you have the money).
YES it's a lot of money, but it's also a lot of machine.
Now you can cry about it all you want, but given the technical specifications I think the price is kinda justified here.
So no it comes down to the fact that you don't wan't to spend this kind of money on a game console, and that's ok.
Perhaps you can't afford it, that's also ok.. This is not a product that anyone needs for survival.. This is the "Pro" premium model.. And still people spend more money on Apple Watches..
But enthusiasts who have the money and understand the value of the tech in this product will likely buy it.
@Boxmonkey
Hit the nail so hard on the head. PushSquare is the hardcore crowd to a T. We are the exact target market for this. And only 10% of us interested. Extrapolate that to the wider audience and well... this is gonna be ugly.
@themightyant I begrudge them, I begrudge them plenty! I have two kids, I can't buy this nonsense. I already have to get my Lego purchases delivered to the office in case the wife finds out I've been splurging again. Imagine if I came home with this 700 quid white elephant. She would destroy me.
@Slideaway1983 Then you know, this product is not for you, and that's fine. Just stick with performance mode on the regular PS5 then.
I find it ridiculous that the base Pro console doesn't even come with a disc drive and it'll cost an extra $80 for one.
@Ooccoo_Jr Come on! It looks almost the same as the PS5, all you have to do is draw 3 go faster stripes down the side of the base model now and in 2 months time she'll never know the difference...
P.S. Vasectomies are cheap compared to kids. You're welcome.
well, i think people will vote with their wallet on this one. sony is not getting its R&D investment back on the pro model and will take a major loss on it.
@DaniPooo I remember people saying the same about PSVR2. You can certainly build a PC that can play games at PS5 quality for less than £700. A PC can do significantly more than a PS5 too. The games on steam are cheaper too. Mouse and keyboards do not get stick drift either.
I’ll stick with what I have, thanks.
@Octaslasher You can play all PS5 games on PS5 Pro.
@themightyant she's already got me on the waitlist for that too.
@Sanquine I'm more confused that they use $ on the main titles when it's a British website, weird
In regards to all-digital doom-posting, I urge you to come back after next-generation launches.
I'd more than happy to see my disc drive to be reusable for next-gen. . . unless ... you're not?
@Ooccoo_Jr For a second there I thought you were calling your wife a 700 pound white elephant. That'll teach me for skimming comments.
On topic: it's too rich for my blood. The improvements are far too negligible for the cost associated. Good luck to anyone that puts their money where their mouth is.
@Pranwell but it's a comment section so people will comment , they're just making their thoughts known , you get the same comments with every new console or console iteration released.
I have been saying this on here for a few weeks now and i will continue to say, careful what some of you wish for. You want Xbox to leave the Hardware space and have Sony all alone. This could be the price of the next PS6 without an Xbox. We need some competition even tho Xbox sells at a 2-1 rate less. Careful what you wish for. Companies take advantage of things. I will be getting a PS5 Pro after selling my PS5 but it is coming in $100 higher than i think it should be.
@Ooccoo_Jr do you keep the lego at the office or bring it home in partly made pieces ? I use to be married so I understand completely 😂
@HonestHick if Sony start pricing new consoles at this price point many many people will be lost to PC.
O my cup runneth over...
So about 900 with disc drive and the lid then i bet they will say PS6 will come about about next summer. Talk about milk the gamers.
@Shalooda I make it in the office and then try and smuggle it home without her noticing. I am yet to be successful.
@Boxmonkey which plays into the hands of the MS. They want their games every where so they can continue to reach the gamers. Sony would then be forced down that same path. Tho i think Sony can sell 100 million units in their sleep. PS is a powerful worldwide brand. They would really have to mess it up but as we seen with PS3 it is possible and in todays world players have more options where a game can be played. PS5 base units will continue to sell just fine and the hardcore like me will snag a Pro. They will be fine but competition is needed for pricing and features.
The worst part is you know the disc drive costs them less than $80. It's a price gouge on top of a price gouge. Just like the cheap vertical stand
@Mintie Yeah that was never going to happen it already has a 2 TB drive but i would say this should have been the maximum price with the drive and and stand included.
@get2sammyb Why is the UK so much more expensive it's a crime.
@themightyant I am and I have disc drive waiting for it.
This is why I’m sad Xbox has failed this gen. Sony are only at their best when faced with fierce competition. Without it, we get terrible games and ridiculous prices like this.
It probably would have been cheaper if Concord wouldnt flop so badly😂 I'm going to bide my time with this one, maybe prices will drop. Or if the enhancements are going to be to good to pass up on. Time will tell.
@DaniPooo adult thinking right there…. I don’t know what the tech in costs but looking at the price I bet that profit on it is razor thin and they will probably claw the money back other ways by stiching suppliers or game makers
Oh yeah, "great", let's add 100-150 euros to those 800...
And we thought the PS3 was expensive.
If you wanted a pro with a disc tray, stand your at like £825 😅 add in a controller and a game....
@Steel76 at least the PS3 did alot more to earn its price tag
@Stickleman
Yeah, and library of games, that would make the PS5 cry.
I’ll just keep my base ps5 until ps6pro when they finally are finished patching gta6, mayyyybe have a few more first party games out, and are no longer releasing games that are cross gen with ps4.
Ngl, it's pretty pathetic that they couldn't even include a disk drive when they are charging 700 and more for it.
Happy to say the ps5 with a disk drive plays games. Like I’m spending £800 to do the exact same thing!!!
It’s also a problem because the ps5 made me think it’s worth waiting u tilt he pro editions release for consoles. Then they do this and I’m like 🤦♂️ it’s a lose, lose situation.
We either have dumb pricing based off of handheld machines or a day one machine that can’t even run games at 60fps and have a good resolution.
@UnlimitedSevens interesting... I had no idea PS4 Pro sold anywhere near that! So yeh potentially a dominant technology flex, PSSR for example has already got in my head somewhat. A console native/specific AI upscaling technology is undeniably appealing for enthusiasts (I include myself in said camp). Their branding is incredibly strong and PSSR just adds to the Playstation proposition.
@Dodoo I feel like a lot of people forgot this. I feel like the 'pro' features should have been there for PS5 from the beginning.
£800 so that I can play a few patched ps4 games with better graphics… ok
Use an older PS5 or if have one a 4K Blu-ray player instead.
For a motion plus on Wii I have the separate one as my built in Wii Motion Plus remote died.
So yeah with a console I'm not going to just keep adding and removing a drive with ware and tear let alone the activation thing they have with. I get why they do it, still annoying it should just slot in no problem.
It's fair as it built in is probably more work to remove it then the attached version here but even still.
With all these articles it makes sense to break things down but wow these journalists get a lot of traffic clearly. XD
As others have said. I'm more concerned about the price of a PS6 at this rate. Gaming is one of my top hobbies, but I can't justify the price of gaming lately (especially when my other hobby is music and instruments are pricey too lol)
I’d get it without the disc. Last disc I bought was Madden 12.
@Bizzy Not you can't.. not with raytracing
@Pranwell Indeed, most likely the scalpers will be hesitant with all the negativity
@jrt87 Sony is most likely not making this console in the same quantities as the regular PS5.
Sony don't expect everyone to upgrade..
Remember, this is not the PS6 or PS5.5, this is marketed as the more premium and extra powerful PS5.
They know that it won't sell like the regular PS5 (especially not for that price)
So obviously they will be producing them at a lower capacity
No disc drive no cash
@Yozora146_
Seriously. I have my PS5 set up horizontally but still need the stand, and a few soft felt furniture sliders to keep it from being wobbly. Not including the stand is absolutely just pure greed.
Although I think the entire PS5 Pro pricing model or the newer disc drive situation for all PS5 systems is just greed over anything else.
With the troubles of the Xbox, Sony will be more confident...err...arrogant again with less competition.
@jrt87 Sure, I wish Apple would target me with their top of the line computers.. But they don't and I can't afford them. However I don't feel the need crying over that. I just get the MacBook Air instead and it's a pretty good computer
@DaniPooo Yes you can... with Ray tracing
@Bizzy I believe it when I see it, so go ahead and prove me wrong, show me a PC build that is as/more capable for the same money or less.
@DaniPooo Give it a try! You will surprise yourself!
@Bizzy Just prove me wrong, I doubt you can.
Oh and it needs to include 2TB of NVME SSD storage.
Don't forget that
If you can find one. It seems to be sold out pretty much everywhere already.
Stupid decision should have been included with the £700 price.
I’ll stick with my normal PS5 thanks
So if I want the disc drive it will cost me around £800? That's $1050, sort out your conversion rates Sony, that's a shambles and a disgrace. Does the attached disc drive function the same performance wise as a built in one?
Drive would be a necessity
Only reason I still buy consoles is so I can rent and buy used games from GameFly. And give my games to my brother, cousins and nephews once I finish them.
If consoles become only digital I will go 100% PC.
Don't worry! I won't be spending MORE money to buy a plug in peripheral that should come as standard as a complete packing for what is the "Pro" version
Looking at PC gaming machines now instead
No physical media support no support from me
